PURPOSE: The aim of this work was to assess the influence of orthodontic treatment with fixed thin wire appliances on hard tissues of the tooth.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The effect of mechanical forces from the fixed appliance on root cement was studied during and after orthodontic treatment. Root cement was examined microscopically following extraction of the affected tooth.
RESULTS: The study group comprised 35 patients who underwent pantomography because of possible root resorption during orthopedic treatment. Reduced root length was noted in 30 patients (85.7%). In most cases, apical resorp

In the present study the age-related morphological characteristics of 948 equine incisors were investigated. After extraction, total incisival length and root length were measured at the vestibular side of the teeth. Equine incisors reach their maximal length 2-3 years after eruption. Notwithstanding severe occlusal wear, this maximal length is maintained during most of the horses' life due to prolonged root formation. Root formation, at the rate of 2.5 mm per year, starts at the age of 5-6 years and continues until the age of 17. As the root of the incisor develops, its apical foramen narrows

This case report describes the continued root formation following replantation and conventional root canal therapy of a traumatically avulsed open-apex tooth with suppurative apical periodontitis. A 7-year-old male patient had an avulsed upper left central incisor (tooth 21) replanted approximately 50 min after traumatic avulsion. A root canal procedure was initiated due to pulp necrosis and periapical abscess detected in the follow-up period. After endodontic treatment with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)(2)) dressing, a normal root length developed including an apical segment beyond the hard tissu

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic tooth movements are based on the ability of bone reaction to mechanical stimulus with the deposition and resorption of alveolar bone. The numerical simulation of tooth movement could be helpful for the treatment strategy. However, at present, few calculations have been carried out on the tooth movement simulation.
METHODS: Finite element (FE) models were developed to simulate an orthodontic treatment of mandibular canine tipping movement during a therapy period with decayed loads. The tooth movement was based on the surface bone remodeling method, and the normal strain

Management of trauma to an immature permanent incisor is a challenge, especially when the pulp is necrotic. The aim of this study is to discuss the management of fractured maxillary right and left central incisors with immature root apex. Radiographic evaluation revealed that the tooth 11 had convergent apical walls, whereas tooth 21 had parallel apical walls; both the incisors were treated with pure calcium hydroxide paste to induce apical development. Follow-up clinical and radiographic examinations confirmed apical barrier at 3 months. Radiograph of tooth 11 with convergent roots showed con

This case report describes the interdisciplinary treatment of an ectopic horizontally placed maxillary right central incisor with severe root dilaceration. The root was distally angulated and entrapped by the root of the maxillary right lateral incisor. The initial force system was aimed at an occlusal displacement and applied to the crown. During the second phase, a button was cemented onto the apex of the impacted tooth. A force from the apex to a temporary anchorage device in the palate moved the root toward the midline. Finally, a root canal and an apectomy were performed and the central i

BACKGROUND: Understanding the relationship between incisor inclination, Collum angle, and alveolar bone thickness is crucial for accurate orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. This study is one of the first to assess the Collum angle and buccal and lingual bone plate thickness of maxillary and mandibular central incisors with tooth inclination on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 112 CBCT scans of the maxilla and 112 CBCT scans of the mandible were three-dimensionally reconstructed using Ez3D-I version 4.1 software. The Co

During routine endodontic therapy, sodium hypochlorite inadvertently was forced out the apex of tooth No. 12. The patient experienced immediate severe pain, swelling, and hemorrhage from the canal access. Treatment was palliative, including patient education and reassurance, narcotic analgesics, cold and hot compresses, and multiple follow-up visits.

Intrusion of permanent teeth is one of the most severe types of traumatic injuries. Different treatment strategies have been proposed, and the best approach for each case depends on the stage of root development, severity of the intrusive luxation, presence of alveolar fracture and number of intruded teeth. The purpose of this paper is to describe the treatment management of 2 cases of severely intruded immature permanent maxillary central incisors in 7 1/2- and 8-year-old children. In case 1, the traumatized tooth was treated by surgical repositioning, while in case 2 watchful waiting for spo

Odontodysplasia is a relatively uncommon condition that can affect both primary and permanent dentition. It is characterized by defective formation of both enamel and dentin, with enlarged pulp chambers and root canals with open apices. It is usually a localised condition where one or few teeth may be involved. Sometimes, an entire quadrant or more than one quadrant may be involved but generalized involvement is extremely rare. An interesting case of a generalized odontodysplasia affecting both primary and permanent dentition in an eight year old girl is presented here.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Some clinical cases of hypoplastic tooth root are congenital. Because the formation of Hertwig's epithelial root sheath (HERS) is an important event for root development and growth, we have considered that understanding the HERS developmental mechanism contributes to elucidate the causal factors of the disease. To find integrant factors and phenomenon for HERS development and growth, we studied the proliferation and mobility of the cervical loop (CL).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We observed the cell movement of CL by the DiI labeling and organ culture system. To examine ce

Children may present at a dental surgery for management of oro-facial injuries. Most general dental practitioners are able to handle straightforward cases but referral may be required for complex injuries. Successful healing following tooth avulsion depends on the amount of damage to teeth and supporting structures, emergency treatment, and follow-up treatment. All of these play a role in the long-term prognosis of avulsed teeth.

This study was undertaken to anatomically investigate the apical portion of root canal. Teeth used in this study were thirty maxillary central incisors, thirty maxillary lateral incisors and thirty maxillary cuspids extracted from patients between the ages of 11 and 73. All of the teeth had periodontal disease, but none had periapical disease. Resorption of the root surface could not be seen with the naked eye. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Deviations of the root apex and the apical foramen. Both of the root apex and apical foramen of the central incisors and cuspids were displaced

Congenital absence of permanent teeth can be treated by means of dental implants and prosthetics. Tooth autotransplantation is an alternative in growing patients because continued eruption of the transplanted tooth and associated alveolar bone growth can be expected. This clinical report presents tooth autotransplantation in a 10-year-old boy with chronic maxillary rhinosinusitis, diagnosed by the department of otorhinolaryngology. The patient's mandibular second premolars were transplanted to a congenitally edentulous maxillary premolar region. There was insufficient alveolar bone during tran
