Long-term prognosis of traumatized permanent anterior teeth showing calcifying processes in the pulp cavity.

122 traumatized teeth with radiographic evidence of abnormal hard tissue formation in the pulp cavity were examined 10-23 years (mean 16 years) after the time of injury. Judged radiographically, partial obliteration (pulp chamber not discernible, root canal markedly narrowed but clearly visible) had occurred in 44 teeth (36%). Normal periradicular conditions were found in all teeth with partial obliteration. Seventy-eight teeth (64%) were recorded as totally obliterated. Pathologic periradicular changes indicating pulp necrosis as a sequel to the total obliteration was observed in 16 teeth (21

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor in anterior maxilla associated with a supernumerary tooth: a case report.

Odontogenic tumors are derived from epithelial, ectomesenchymal and/or mesenchymal elements that are or have been a part of the tooth-forming apparatus. Of all the odontogenic tumors, calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor accounts for 1% of the cases. Approximately 200 cases have been reported to date. There is no sex predilection, with a 2:1 predilection for the mandible, mostly in the premolar/molar region. It is often locally invasive. Most often, it is associated with an impacted tooth, is asymptomatic and requires biopsy for diagnosis. Presented here is a rare case of an intraosseous ca

Dental age in maxillary canine ectopia.

An etiologic connection between palatally ectopic canines and small and missing teeth is well established in the literature. Additionally, it has been observed that patients with palatally ectopic canines have a delayed dental development. The present study was designed to examine the validity of this latter observation. We radiographically assessed the subjects' dental ages using criteria of tooth calcification, rather than tooth eruption pattern. A similar determination was made in relation to subjects in whom buccally ectopic canines were present. The experimental group consisted of panoram

Clinical and historical predictors of dental caries on radiographs.

This report evaluates the efficacy of the clinical predictors of caries proposed in the USA FDA guidelines for prescribing dental radiographs. The clinical findings that best associate with the presence of any caries where a history of pain, a defective restoration, unusual calcification, and an abutment tooth for a fixed or removable prosthesis. There is a group of measures of periodontal disease that were also weakly associated with the presence of caries. The best predictors of caries extending into the dentin were the presence of clinically defective restorations, a history of pain, and si

Dentinogenesis imperfecta in the Brandywine isolate (DI type III): clinical, radiologic, and scanning electron microscopic studies of the dentition.

Teeth of seven patients from the Brandywine isolate who had dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI) type III were evaluated by clinical, radiologic, and scanning electron microscopic techniques. The deciduous and permanent teeth were opalescent, and there was marked attrition. Enamel pitting was present on some permanent teeth. Anterior open bites were found in all persons with complete permanent dentitions. Pulps of developing teeth were larger than normal during early development but rapidly became almost completely obliterated. There was increased constriction at the cementoenamel junctions. While r

[Quantitative study of the mineral substance of the human dental cementum].

A study of the mineral substance of human dental cementum was made by various biophysical methods. In healthy teeth, average degree of mineralization of the cementum as well as crystallinity and fluoride content of its mineral substance, were found to increase as a function of age. This evolution, typical of the physiological ageing process of calcified tissues, is especially pronounced for the cementum, because of the absence of remodeling activity such as that occuring in bone tissue. Cementum of impacted or semi-impacted teeth was found to have a significantly lower degree of mineralization

Tooth developmental anomalies in severe combined immunodeficiency disease and juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia: common clinical features and treatment outcomes.

AIM: Human Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) is a prenatal disorder of T lymphocyte development that depends on the expression of numerous genes. Juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML), previously known as juvenile chronic myeloid leukemia (JCML), is a rare, myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative disease typically presenting in early childhood. CASE REPORTS: Two cases are described of immunodeficiency disorders, both treated with chemotherapeutic drugs (Busulfan plus cyclophosphamide) before bone marrow transplantation. After treatment, these two different cases showed several similar oral

Central odontogenic fibroma, hyperplastic dental follicle, or dentigerous cyst? A diagnostic dilemma: A case report.

Central odontogenic fibroma (COF) is an extremely rare benign odontogenic tumor, which is associated with an unerupted tooth in one-third of the cases. Hyperplastic dental follicle (HDF) is an odontogenic hamartomatous lesion associated with delayed or tooth eruption failure in young patients. Dentigerous cyst (DC) is an epithelial-lined developmental cyst surrounding the crown of an unerupted or impacted tooth. Here, we present a case of 13-year-old boy with pericoronal radiolucency around impacted right maxillary canine tooth, which detected during routine dental examination on panoramic rad

Increased Presence of Complement Factors and Mast Cells in Alveolar Bone and Tooth Resorption.

Periodontitis is the inflammatory destruction of the tooth-surrounding and -supporting tissue, resulting at worst in tooth loss. Another locally aggressive disease of the oral cavity is tooth resorption (TR). This is associated with the destruction of the dental mineralized tissue. However, the underlying pathomechanisms remain unknown. The complement system, as well as mast cells (MCs), are known to be involved in osteoclastogenesis and bone loss. The complement factors C3 and C5 were previously identified as key players in periodontal disease. Therefore, we hypothesize that complement factor

The influence of a hexametaphosphate-containing chewing gum on the wetting ability of salivary conditioning films in vitro and in vivo.

OBJECTIVE: Adsorbed conditioning films of salivary components on dental enamel surfaces or pellicles form the interface between teeth and the oral environment. The wetting ability of salivary conditioning films dictates biological adhesion phenomena such as plaque formation, calcification and staining, and also influences mouth perception through effects on lubricity. This study assessed the effects of hexametaphosphate release from a chewing gum matrix on the wetting ability of salivary conditioning films in vitro and in vivo. METHODOLOGY: Results obtained for hexametaphosphate chewing gum w

Effect of menopausal estrogen deficiency on dentin formation: A comparative analysis of mineralization front and predentin thickness in pre and postmenopausal women.

OBJECTIVE: The effects of menopausal estrogen deficiency on dentin and its uncalcified organic matrix, termed predentin, in humans have not been documented so far in the literature. Thus, the present study was conducted to study the effects of menopause on dentin by analyzing the mineralization front in predentin and measuring the predentin thickness in teeth of pre and post-menopausal women. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 80 freshly extracted teeth, collected from pre and postmenopausal women (40 from each group), between 30-60 years of age group, were decalcified and predentin thickness was measured

The cell biology and role of resorptive cells in diseases: A review.

Resorptive cells are responsible for the resorption of mineralized matrix of hard tissues. Bone-resorbing cells are called osteoclasts; however, they can resorb mineralized dental tissues or calcified cartilage and then they are called odontoclasts and chondroclasts, respectively. Resorptive cells form when mononuclear precursors derived from a monocyte-macrophage cell lineage are attracted to certain mineralized surfaces and subsequently fuse and adhere onto them for exerting their resorbing activity. These cells are responsible for degradation of calcified extracellular matrix composed of or

Tooth dentin defects reflect genetic disorders affecting bone mineralization.

Several genetic disorders affecting bone mineralization may manifest during dentin mineralization. Dentin and bone are similar in several aspects, especially pertaining to the composition of the extracellular matrix (ECM) which is secreted by well-differentiated odontoblasts and osteoblasts, respectively. However, unlike bone, dentin is not remodelled and is not involved in the regulation of calcium and phosphate metabolism. In contrast to bone, teeth are accessible tissues with the shedding of deciduous teeth and the extractions of premolars and third molars for orthodontic treatment. The fea

[Interface science in formation of biominerals and biomolecules].

The prototype for the minerals in bone and teeth is usually considered to be the basic calcium phosphate hydroxyapatite (HA), containing impurities, such as carbonate and structural defects. It has been proposed that the biological apatite is formed via precursor phases, such as octacalcium phosphate (OCP). The initial precursors maturate with aging and may alter its surface property depending on the proceeding of the hydrolysis into HA regarding adsorption affinity for various biomolecules existing around the forming biominerals. The maturation of the biominerals could be modulating the proce

Dysosteosclerosis: a case with unique dental findings and SEM evaluation of a hypoplastic tooth.

A ten-year-old boy, who had the typical dental findings of dysosteosclerosis such as yellowish, hypoplastic teeth, retarded eruption, which upon eruption, decayed rapidly, is presented. To date this is the first known case reported with a congenital absence of the first permanent molars. Furthermore, SEM evaluation of the enamel and dentin was performed on a tooth from a patient with dysosteosclerosis for the first time. These studies showed weak ultrastructural compositions due to irregular calcification.

Immunology of root resorption: a literature review.

Root resorption seems to be related to a complex combination of mechanical factors and biological activity, which comprehends the role of immunologic structures including specialized cells. The aim of this research was to explain the development of the process--from mineralization to the destruction of hard tissues--and the possible relationship between root resorption and immunology, along with discussing current concepts described in the literature.
