This systematic review explores the relationship between the oral microbiome in edentulous patients and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). A search was conducted across databases PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and gray literature sources. The review followed PRISMA and AMSTAR guidelines. After removing duplicates, the articles were evaluated by titles and abstracts, and 21 were selected for full-text review, with 9 ultimately included in the final analysis. Oral dysbiosis, linked to systemic conditions like obesity, diabetes, and CVD, is common in inflammatory oral diseases such as period

ObjectiveTo determine if (a) secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure is associated with tooth loss and (b) such a relationship is modified by socioeconomic position (SEP).MethodsData were from the 2019 Brazilian National Health Survey. Zero-inflated negative binomial regression and binary logistic regression were employed to examine the association between monthly exposure to SHS at home or at work with extent of teeth lost and lack of functional dentition (FD), respectively. Effect Measure Modification (EMM) analyses and the simple slope test explored whether the association varied with levels of edu

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review systematically mapped the evidence on the association between tooth loss and serum cholesterol levels in adults, addressing a significant gap in understanding the direct link beyond broader systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease.
METHODS: In accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, a comprehensive search of four electronic databases (PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library) was conducted from July 1968 to September 2025. Studies involving adults (≥ 18 years) that quantified tooth loss and reported serum lipid profiles specifically high-densit

OBJECTIVES: Sjögren disease (SD) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the exocrine glands, often resulting in significant oral health complications, such as dental caries and periodontal disease. Tooth loss, a potential consequence of these conditions, has not yet been conclusively associated to SD. This systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-regression aimed to determine whether individuals with SD exhibit higher tooth loss compared to healthy controls.
DATA AND SOURCES: Five databases and gray literature were searched. Observational studies were included. Meta-analysi

Our review study addresses the issue of tooth loss, which is caused by loss of masticatory function and its impact on cognitive functions, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease. Numerous studies have confirmed a positive correlation between premature tooth loss, reduction in masticatory function and significant cognitive decline observed through learning disabilities, including overcoming ordinary life problems to early and advanced forms of dementia. Reduced numbers of teeth in the main food processing area, i.e., loss of large molars, have been implicated as a possible cause of cognitive impairm

BACKGROUND: Smokeless tobacco (SLT) products of several different types are widely used in several South Asian countries including Pakistan. These products are consumed in different forms and with different names. The study aims to determine adverse effects of the SLT consumption on periodontal tissues.
METHODS: This cross sectional study was conducted in Karachi, Pakistan. It recruited 377 users of (SLT) with 231 males (61.3%) and 146 females (38.7%) of age 15 to 45 years. After obtaining informed consent, quantitative data were collected via a questionnaire followed by intra oral clinical e

BACKGROUND: In many mammalian species, once the permanent teeth have erupted, the only change to dentition is a gradual loss of tooth surface/height through wear. The crown of the teeth cannot be repaired once worn. When dental crown tissue has been depleted due to wear, the animal is expected to have a suboptimal body condition. We evaluated the role of tooth wear in causing a reduction of physical condition in adult roe deer females (Capreolus capreolus).
RESULTS: The progressive wearing of the lower cheek teeth was assessed in a Northern Apennines (Italy) population with a new scoring sche

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the study was twofold: (1) to test the hypothesis that tooth loss is independently associated with carotid atherosclerotic burden (CAB) among individuals with ischemic stroke (IS) or transient ischemic attack (TIA) and (2) to test the association between tooth loss and disability following the occurrence of cerebral ischemia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This observational study included 418 patients with IS or TIA. Tooth loss and the CAB were measured through a head and neck multidetector computed tomography angiography. CAB was analyzed in both common, internal, and ext

BACKGROUND: Our purpose was to test the hypotheses that cigar and pipe smoking have significant associations with periodontal disease and cigar, pipe, and cigarette smoking is associated with tooth loss. We also investigated whether a history of smoking habits cessation may affect the risk of periodontal disease and tooth loss.
METHODS: A group of 705 individuals (21 to 92 years-old) who were among volunteer participants in the ongoing Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging were examined clinically to assess their periodontal status and tooth loss. A structured interview was used to assess the

In our study 37 transplanted and 33 mesialized molars by orthodontics were clinically and radiologically compared. The teeth moved by orthodontics showed a better long-term prognosis. As vital teeth with functioning periodontal structures and only slightly shortened roots they were equivalent to healthy teeth. However, the disadvantage of orthodontic space closure is the requirement of a good compliance due to long treatment time. The prognosis of maintaining a transplanted tooth germ is uncertain. One third of the teeth showed an altered periodontium with resorption areas. The danger of a con

BACKGROUND: The increasing global burden of dementia highlights the importance of identifying factors that may contribute to cognitive decline in later life. Growing evidence suggests that chronic oral conditions, particularly periodontitis (PD) and tooth loss, may be associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias. This study synthesizes current observational evidence on the association between PD, tooth loss, and cognitive impairment (CI) among older adults.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Embase, Scopus, and Google Sc

Objective Dementia is a major cause of disruption for a healthy life expectancy in Japan. It has been suggested that the number of teeth is a modifiable risk factor for cognitive impairment and dementia. We therefore examined the possible association between the cognitive function and the number of natural and artificial teeth in community-dwelling Japanese elderly individuals. Methods Among the participants in our prospective, community-based study, 210 elderly individuals (103 men and 107 women; 78.1±4.9 years; mean age±standard deviation) underwent both dental examinations and a Mini-Mental

This study sought to establish the association between tooth loss due to dental caries and variables related to access to information on oral health in adults aged 35-44 years (n = 780) who participated in a large epidemiological study. The dependent variable was total tooth loss due to caries. The independent variables were grouped into blocks: demographic and socio-economic characteristics, use of dental service, access to oral health information (about how to prevent oral problems; oral hygiene; and diet), and behaviors. The analysis was conducted using hierarchical multiple linear regressi

A study was conducted to compare the mean testosterone and bone mineral density (BMD) levels in men with and without tooth loss. Two hundred three male subjects aged 30-65 years satisfying the study criteria were selected and then examined for bone mineral density, testosterone level, clinical attachment loss, probing pocket depth, tooth mobility and tooth loss due to periodontal disease. Statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (version 15.0) (SPSS Inc., Chicago, Ill, USA), and differences were considered to be significant at P < 0.05. It has been reported that tooth loss is associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between tooth loss and mild memory impairment (MMI) among the elderly. We examined 3,061 community residents aged 65 years or older who had a score of 24 or more on the Mini-Mental State Examination. The subjects were divided according to their score for the three-word delayed recall test into control (score: 3 or 2) and MMI (score: 1 or 0) subjects. The subjects underwent a dental examination, an interview to determine their medical histor

AIM: We evaluated whether the number of teeth lost is associated with risk factors for osteoporosis and whether bone mass measurements can add further information.
METHODS: A total of 455 healthy women were enrolled. All the subjects filled in a questionnaire on risk factors for osteoporosis. The bone mineral density (BMD) was measured both by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and quantitative ultrasound measurements (QUS).
RESULTS: On the basis of the questionnaire score 65.1% of the subjects were in the low risk category, 11% in the moderate risk category, 19.3% in the fairly high risk categ
