BACKGROUND: Dental caries is one of the most prevalent chronic oral diseases worldwide. In the management of deep carious lesions, complete removal of decayed tissue disregards the biological heterogeneity of dentine and may increase the risk of iatrogenic pulp exposure, thereby predisposing teeth to pulpal inflammation and related complications. With the advancement of minimally invasive dentistry, selective caries removal (SCR) has emerged as a biology-guided treatment strategy and has gained increasing attention in clinical practice.
OBJECTIVE: SCR aims to precisely eliminate infected dent

Calcium phosphate exhibits excellent biocompatibility, and with particle size in the nanoscale, calcium phosphate nanoparticles (CPNPs) were explored to replace the hydroxyapatite lost in the nanoporous teeth due to dental erosion. CPNPs (2% w/v) colloidally stabilised by sodium citrate were synthesised via co-precipitation. They were characterised in terms of particle size, morphology, crystallinity, Ca/P ratio and calcium ion release. To ensure uniformity of the substrate, hydroxyapatite (HA) discs were examined as an alternative substrate model to enamel. They were eroded in acetate buffer

Management of the caries process on occlusal surfaces of permanent molars has proven a major challenge. The onset of caries on these surfaces takes place soon after their eruption, and the permanent first molars, followed by the second molars, remain the sites in the dentition which show the highest caries prevalence. This paper is structured in the form of questions and answers in which traditional concepts of caries susceptibility of occlusal surfaces are appraised and confronted with the current evidence. Then, research studies examining the role of biological determinants on the developmen

Dental caries, the most common oral disease with a worldwide burden, causes structural damage to enamel and dentine. Considering the limitations of conventional restorative approaches and the dynamic nature of caries, biomimetic remineralization strategies offer a promising alternative for restoring tooth structure. Central to many of these strategies is the use of polymers to emulate the role of macromolecular templates in natural mineralization processes. This review summarizes the polymers applied for biomimetic mineralization of enamel and dentine according to their primary functions. Furt

Dental caries is a disease that affects people of all ages since demineralization and remineralization of tooth surfaces occur in everyone's mouths, and caries lesions develop when there is an imbalance between demineralization and remineralization. In this way, teeth are exposed to a risk of caries. Prevention strategies aiming at "zero caries" and treatments aiming at "tooth recovery and regeneration" are the two main areas of caries research, and both basic and clinical research are required in these fields. The following future perspectives of caries research were identified: The disease c

On a global note, oral health plays a critical role in improving the overall human health. In this vein, dental-related issues with dentin exposure often facilitate the risk of developing various oral-related diseases in gums and teeth. Several oral-based ailments include gums-associated (gingivitis or periodontitis), tooth-based (dental caries, root infection, enamel erosion, and edentulous or total tooth loss), as well as miscellaneous diseases in the buccal or oral cavity (bad breath, mouth sores, and oral cancer). Although established conventional treatment modalities have been available t

Artificial caries-softened dentin lesions in root surfaces were treated with 50% slurries of a monofluorophosphate (MFP) dentifrice or a placebo dentifrice twice daily for ten days. Between dentifrice treatments, the lesions were kept in a remineralizing solution. Both treatments resulted in statistically significant remineralization, with the MFP dentifrice being significantly better than the placebo. Deposition of new mineral from the MFP dentifrice occurred about equally at or within the surface zone and at the deepest part of the lesion. Mineral deposition from the placebo appeared to be m

Fluoride varnish is developed to prolong the contact time between fluoride and tooth surface, so that the tooth becomes more resistant to caries attack. The active ingredient of fluoride varnish is usually 5% sodium fluoride, (22,600 ppm fluoride). Studies have found that fairly insoluble globules of calcium fluoride-like material formed on the tooth surface after topical fluoride application. These globules act as a reservoir of fluoride in the mouth for a prolonged period of time. Systematic reviews corroborate evidence for the efficacy of fluoride varnish in the prevention of dental caries.
