Effects of loxoprofen on the apical root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement in rats.

Studies have revealed that severe apical root resorption during tooth movement is caused by the noninfective inflammatory reaction of apical root tissues. We hypothesized that loxoprofen can suppress apical root resorption during tooth movement. Cyclic tensile force (CTF) of 10 kPa was applied to the human pulp cells for 48 hours by the Flexcell Strain Unit. Loxoprofen (10 and 100 μM) was added to the culture cells, and expression of cyclooxygenase (COX)-1, COX-2, interleukin (IL)-1β, receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and macrophage col

Correction of a Single Discolored Anterior Tooth Due to Internal Resorption: A Clinical Report.

For patients with a single discolored tooth who desire to have it lightened, a thorough examination and radiographic analysis need to be performed prior to initiating any bleaching treatment so that the cause of the discoloration can be determined. Underlying pathology, such as internal resorption, is often asymptomatic and difficult to diagnose and if left untreated could result in tooth loss. This article describes a case of a patient with a discolored maxillary central incisor resulting from internal resorption and the subsequent endodontic and bleaching therapy performed to resolve the pat

[The role of pulp in the root resorption of primary teeth without permanent tooth germs].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of pulp in the root resorption of primary teeth without permanent tooth germs. METHODS: The animal model without permanent tooth germs was established by surgery in Beagle dog. The root resorption was observed by taking periapical radiographs periodically. The samples of mandibular bone and pulp at different resorption stages were collected. The distribution of odontoclasts and the activating factor was analyzed by histological staining and semiquantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The role of pulp in the root resorption of p

Inhibitory effects of IL-12 on experimental tooth movement and root resorption in mice.

OBJECTIVE: Interleukin (IL)-12 is an important cytokine for innate and adaptive immunity. We previously reported that IL-12 inhibits tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α-mediated osteoclast formation by inducing apoptosis. We also reported that TNF-α plays an important role in mechanical loading-induced osteoclast formation and bone resorption during orthodontic tooth movement. In this study, we investigated the effects of IL-12 on mechanical tooth movement in mice. DESIGN: A Ni-Ti closed coil spring was inserted between the upper incisors and the upper left first molar in mice. IL-12 was injected

Effects of local administration of clodronate on orthodontic tooth movement and root resorption in rats.

Clodronate, a non-N-containing bisphosphonate, strongly inhibits bone resorption and also has anti-inflammatory properties. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the local administration of clodronate on orthodontic tooth movement. Both the right and left upper first molars of 26 7-week-old male Wistar rats were moved buccally with a standardized expansion spring. Clodronate solution was injected into the sub-periosteum area adjacent to the left upper molar every third day during the experimental period. The right first molar served as the control. Local injection of clodronat

Treatment of asymptomatic internal resorption of a maxillary premolar tooth in a military working dog.

An asymptomatic pink discoloration of a maxillary right fourth premolar tooth was discovered during a routine oral examination on a 9 year-old Belgian Malinois dog. A radiolucent lesion was seen in the pulpal chamber on radiographic examination. The lesion had perforated the mesiobuccal root of the tooth. The primary differential diagnosis was idiopathic internal resorption. The tooth was treated by partial resection (removal of the mesiobuccal root and associated crown). A vital pulpotomy and amalgam restoration was performed on the remaining tooth structure. A follow-up 1 year later demonstr

A large case-control study indicates a breed-specific predisposition to feline tooth resorption.

Tooth resorption (TR) is one of the most common dental diseases of cats. It is a painful condition leading to tooth loss. The etiology of TR remains unclear, but old age, breed, other oral and dental diseases, and environmental factors are suspected predisposing factors. In our study, we used part of the data from the extensive feline health online survey of 8115 Finnish cats. As TR is difficult to detect and as the feline health survey included diagnoses defined by both veterinarians and the owners, we limited our study to a subpopulation of cats diagnosed with oral or dental disease by a vet

BoneCeramic graft regenerates alveolar defects but slows orthodontic tooth movement with less root resorption.

INTRODUCTION: BoneCeramic (Straumann, Basel, Switzerland) can regenerate bone in alveolar defects after tooth extraction, but it is unknown whether it is feasible to move a tooth through BoneCeramic grafting sites. The objective of this study was to investigate 3-dimensional real-time root resorption and bone responses in grafted sites during orthodontic tooth movement. METHODS: Sixty 5-week-old rats were randomly assigned to 3 groups to receive BoneCeramic, natural bovine cancellous bone particles (Bio-Oss; Geistlich Pharma, Wolhusen, Switzerland), or no graft, after the extraction of the ma

Strontium ranelate improved tooth anchorage and reduced root resorption in orthodontic treatment of rats.

The anchorage mechanisms currently used in orthodontic treatment have various disadvantages. The objective of this study was to determine the applicability of the osteoporosis medication strontium ranelate in pharmacologically induced orthodontic tooth anchorage. In 48 male Wistar rats, a constant orthodontic force of 0.25 N was reciprocally applied to the upper first molar and the incisors by means of a Sentalloy(®) closed coil spring for two to four weeks. 50% of the animals received strontium ranelate at a daily oral dosage of 900 mg per kilogramme of body weight. Bioavailability was determ

Rescuing a "hopeless" tooth with severe internal resorption during orthodontic therapy: a case report.

Root resorption is one of the leading complications that follows orthodontic treatment. It's an inflammatory process involving ischemic necrosis. Therefore, it is called orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR). The purpose of this report is to present a case study of a patient in her 20s who experienced internal root resorption on two maxillary central incisors as a result of orthodontic treatment. Mineral trioxide aggregates (MTAs) were applied to the root resorption lesion to promote remineralization. A clinical and radiographic examination revealed that no radiolucency
