MRI-guided attenuation correction in torso PET/MRI: Assessment of segmentation-, atlas-, and deep learning-based approaches in the presence of outliers.

PURPOSE: We compare the performance of three commonly used MRI-guided attenuation correction approaches in torso PET/MRI, namely segmentation-, atlas-, and deep learning-based algorithms. METHODS: Twenty-five co-registered torso 18 F-FDG PET/CT and PET/MR images were enrolled. PET attenuation maps were generated from in-phase Dixon MRI using a three-tissue class segmentation-based approach (soft-tissue, lung, and background air), voxel-wise weighting atlas-based approach, and a residual convolutional neural network. The bias in standardized uptake value (SUV) was calculated for each approach

Capabilities of two- and three-dimensional FDG-PET for detecting small lesions and lymph nodes in the upper torso: a dynamic phantom study.

The capabilities and limitations of two-(2D) and three-dimensional (3D) fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) in detecting small tumors and lymph nodes were studied in a phantom modeling the human chest and axilla. Multiple dual-radionuclide phantom studies were performed. Five hollow spheres ranging in diameter from 3 mm to 15 mm were filled with carbon-11 and placed in the axillary and mediastinal regions of an anthropomorphic phantom containing hollow organs filled with 18F to simulate FDG uptake 1 h after injection. Dynamic imaging was performed to acquire P

Feasibility of dual-energy CBCT material decomposition in the human torso with 2D anti-scatter grids and grid-based scatter sampling.

BACKGROUND: Dual-energy (DE) imaging techniques in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) have potential clinical applications, including material quantification and improved tissue visualization. However, the performance of DE CBCT is limited by the effects of scattered radiation, which restricts its use to small object imaging. PURPOSE: This study investigates the feasibility of DE CBCT material decomposition by reducing scatter with a 2D anti-scatter grid and a measurement-based scatter correction method. Specifically, the investigation focuses on iodine quantification accuracy and virtual m

A new algorithm to diagnose atrial ectopic origin from multi lead ECG systems--insights from 3D virtual human atria and torso.

Rapid atrial arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation (AF) predispose to ventricular arrhythmias, sudden cardiac death and stroke. Identifying the origin of atrial ectopic activity from the electrocardiogram (ECG) can help to diagnose the early onset of AF in a cost-effective manner. The complex and rapid atrial electrical activity during AF makes it difficult to obtain detailed information on atrial activation using the standard 12-lead ECG alone. Compared to conventional 12-lead ECG, more detailed ECG lead configurations may provide further information about spatio-temporal dynamics of the bo

The Effect of Threshold Loading Training and an Innovative Respiratory Training Devices with Lower Torso Sports Training in Asthma Patients: A Randomized Trial.

This study investigated the influence of two different devices with lower torso sports training in patients with asthma. Patients with asthma (n = 300) aged 55-60 years with FEV1/FVC ratio < 65%, who were repeatedly admitted to a pulmonary rehabilitation centre, participated. Patients were evaluated and randomized into two groups (experimental group 1; EXP-1, n = 150, who applied a conventional threshold loading device, and experimental group 2; EXP-2, n = 150, who used an innovative respiratory training device). Patients were included only if they met the global criteria for asthma. The exper

Anatomical Site-Specific Microbiological Divergence in Combat-Related Injuries During the Ukraine Conflict: A Comparative Analysis of Head, Torso, and Extremity Wounds.

INTRODUCTION: Combat-related infection research is overwhelmingly skewed toward extremity injuries because of the effectiveness of modern body armor. This creates a critical knowledge gap regarding the microbiological dynamics of non-limb anatomical sites, particularly in the context of intense warfare. This study evaluates the wound microflora of 51 Ukrainian soldiers during the second phase of the conflict with Russia, focusing on head and torso injuries. A key objective was to investigate how blast-induced acoustic barotrauma-including tympanic membrane perforation and mucosal damage-acts a

The anchor point algorithm: A morphometric analysis of anatomic landmarks to guide placement of temporary aortic Rescue stent grafts for noncompressible torso hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Noncompressible hemorrhage remains a high-mortality injury, which requires rapid damage control within minutes to avoid exsanguination. Retrievable stent grafts offer perfusion preserving hemorrhage damage control, and yet algorithms for device selection and positioning are lacking for an anatomically diverse human population. We hypothesized that easily acquired external measurements could be used to rapidly triage patients to receive one of several presized stents and that these metrics may further predict a single target on the aorta by which to optimize both mesenteric perfusio

Estimation of the effective dose in torso 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT: an analysis of real-world clinical data from 51,784 patient scans.

BACKGROUND: Large-scale estimation of effective dose (ED) for positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) remains limited. This study aimed to determine the ED of torso 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/CT using extensive real-world clinical data from a high-volume centre. Differences in ED were also evaluated according to PET/CT scanner type, patient sex, and body size. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on PET/CT examinations from individuals aged ≥ 16 years and acquired between March 2019 and June 2022. Five PET/CT scanners were used during the study period. CT E

Necrotizing fasciitis: literature review of contemporary strategies for diagnosing and management with three case reports: torso, abdominal wall, upper and lower limbs.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is an uncommon soft tissue infection, usually caused by toxin-producing virulent bacteria. It is characterized by widespread fascial necrosis primarily caused by Streptococcus hemolyticus. Shortly after the onset of the disease, patients become colonized with their own aerobic and anaerobic microflora from the gastrointestinal and/or urogenital tracts. Early diagnosis with aggressive multidisciplinary treatment is mandatory. We describe three clinical cases with NF. The first is a 69 years old man with diabetes mellitus type II, who presented with NF on the posterior

Point of care ultrasound and sub-xiphoid window reduce uncertainty in the management of potential dual-cavity injuries in patients with torso stab wounds.

INTRODUCTION: This paper reviews our experiences with the management of patients with torso stab wounds and potential injuries in both the chest and abdomen over the last decade. The aim of the project is to clarify our approach and provide an evidence base for clinical algorithms. We hypothesize that there is room for our clinical algorithms to be further refined in order to address the diverse, life threatening injuries that can result from stab wounds to the torso. METHODS: Patients with one or more torso stab wounds, and a potential injury in both the chest and the abdomen were identified

A localizing circumferential compression device delayed death after artificial eastern diamondback rattlesnake envenomation to the torso of an animal model in a pilot study.

Nearly all prior studies to delay onset of systemic toxicity and death after snake bite use a model of distal extremity envenomation. In the first of a series of planned studies using snake venoms with different toxicity profiles, the application of a novel device in a new model of torso envenomation in the setting of Eastern Coral Snake (Micrurus fulvius) venom (a potent neurotoxin) envenomation showed promise by delaying systemic intoxication. In this pilot study, we investigated this novel localizing circumferential compression (LoCC) device's ability to delay onset of life threatening syst

Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta provides better survival outcomes for noncompressible blunt torso bleeding below the diaphragm compared to resuscitative thoracotomy.

BACKGROUND: Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) serves as a bridging intervention for subsequent definitive haemorrhagic control. This study compared the clinical outcomes of REBOA and resuscitative thoracotomy (RT) in patients with bleeding below the diaphragm. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included adult trauma patients who presented to the Trauma Quality Improvement Program between 2020 and 2021 and who underwent either REBOA or RT in the emergency department (ED). Patients with severe head and chest injuries, characterised by an Abbre

Association between prehospital field to emergency department delta shock index and in-hospital mortality in patients with torso and extremity trauma: A multinational, observational study.

Hemorrhage, a main cause of mortality in patients with trauma, affects vital signs such as blood pressure and heart rate. Shock index (SI), calculated as heart rate divided by systolic blood pressure, is widely used to estimate the shock status of patients with hemorrhage. The difference in SI between the emergency department and prehospital field can indirectly reflect urgency after trauma. We aimed to determine the association between delta SI (DSI) and in-hospital mortality in patients with torso or extremity trauma. Patients with DSI >0.1 are expected to be associated with high mortality.

Trauma patients with tibia/fibula fractures are associated with an increased risk of torso, severe head, and severe spine injuries compared to patients with femur fractures.

BACKGROUND: Although previous studies have demonstrated an association between lower extremity fractures and concomitant torso (thorax and abdomen) injuries in trauma patients, they do not compare different types of fractures. Therefore, we investigated the risk of associated torso injuries between femur and tibia/fibula fractures, hypothesizing that trauma patients with femur fractures are at higher risk of torso injuries compared to patients with tibia/fibula fractures. METHODS: The Trauma Quality Improvement Program database (2010-2016) was queried for patients presenting with either femur

Normal model construction for statistical image analysis of torso FDG-PET images based on anatomical standardization by CT images from FDG-PET/CT devices.

PURPOSE: A better understanding of the standardized uptake value (SUV) ranges of fludeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is crucial for radiologists. We have developed a statistical image analysis method for FDG-PET imaging of the torso, based on comparisons with normal data. The purpose of this study was to verify the accuracy of the normal model and usefulness of the statistical image analysis method by using typical cancer cases in the liver, lungs, and abdomen. METHODS: Our study and the data collection (49 normal and 34 abnormal cases, in terms of PET/CT findings) were app

Association between total prehospital time and early mortality in patients with severe torso trauma: a retrospective study at an urban Emergency and Critical Care Center.

BACKGROUND: In urban emergency and critical care centers (ECCCs), transport distances are relatively short, and severely injured trauma patients may reach the hospital before cardiac arrest occurs. Severe torso trauma is relevant as it may involve time-sensitive hemorrhage in the chest, abdomen, or pelvis. However, the association between total prehospital time (TPT) and early mortality has not been well examined in urban settings in Japan. We aimed to investigate this relationship in patients with severe torso trauma treated at an urban ECCC. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study w
