Touching with torque enables human-level robotic dexterity.

Achieving human-like forceful manipulation remains a major challenge in robotics because of the lack of critical environmental interaction cues such as collisions, balance, and resistance. We present a torque-angle-pressure (TAP) tactile sensor leveraging magnetic flux density gradients to achieve bidirectional, ultrasensitive (~0.1°, ~0.4 newton-millimeter), and high-linearity (R2 = 0.99) sensing over a wide range (±241.6 newton-millimeter) through a single readout channel. The accurate torque sensing ability provides both force and distance information, bringing the environment into the inte

Untouched: understanding the role of touch in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

People with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) engage in a wide array of rituals, including both visible behaviors and mental activities, with some of them involving the sense of touch. However, despite the essential role of touch in physical, emotional, and social interactions, the link between touch and OCD has not been thoroughly examined. This review explores the complex and under-investigated relationship between touch and OCD across three domains: (1) sensory phenomena, including "just-right" sensations and tactile over-responsivity; (2) social and interpersonal touch, particularly in t

Touching soft materials slows affective visual processing.

Presently, there is extensive evidence of multisensory integration in tactile and visual processing. While it has been shown that multisensory interaction between touch and vision influences many cognitive processes, such as object recognition, the role of multisensory interaction in the affective domain is still poorly understood. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of tactile perception on the affective processing of visual stimuli. Two experiments were conducted with urethane rubbers of differing compliance and with visually presented words. In the first experiment, participa

Touching the unconscious in the unconscious - hypnotic communication with unconscious patients.

If hypnosis means contact to the unconscious to modulate psychological and physiological functions by means of suggestions, and if this is facilitated by attenuation of the critical mind, then the question arises as to whether suggestions also have an effect when waking consciousness is otherwise eliminated, namely by coma or anesthesia. A prerequisite would be perception, which actually is evidenced by reports of patients after traumatic brain injury, artificial coma, resuscitation or general anesthesia. Moreover, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) frequently observed after these medical si

Mechanoreceptor synapses in the brainstem shape the central representation of touch.

Mammals use glabrous (hairless) skin of their hands and feet to navigate and manipulate their environment. Cortical maps of the body surface across species contain disproportionately large numbers of neurons dedicated to glabrous skin sensation, in part reflecting a higher density of mechanoreceptors that innervate these skin regions. Here, we find that disproportionate representation of glabrous skin emerges over postnatal development at the first synapse between peripheral mechanoreceptors and their central targets in the brainstem. Mechanoreceptor synapses undergo developmental refinement t

Smart homes that detect sneeze, cough, and face touching.

Coughing, sneezing, and face touching activities are three primary ways of spreading disease. With the onset of COVID-19 it is paramount to monitor these activities at home and practice good hygiene. To help stop the spread of disease, we have developed a wireless sensing system capable of detecting voluntary coughs, sneezes, and face touching with alert based notifications sent to a mobile application. Our system uses radio frequency technology to capture motion, speed, direction, and range information from human activities. It does this by using a combination of a continuous wave Doppler and

Prefrontal and posterior parietal contributions to the perceptual awareness of touch.

Which brain regions contribute to the perceptual awareness of touch remains largely unclear. We collected structural magnetic resonance imaging scans and neurological examination reports of 70 patients with brain injuries or stroke in S1 extending into adjacent parietal, temporal or pre-/frontal regions. We applied voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping to identify brain areas that overlap with an impaired touch perception (i.e., hypoesthesia). As expected, patients with hypoesthesia (n = 43) presented lesions in all Brodmann areas in S1 on postcentral gyrus (BA 1, 2, 3a, 3b). At the anterior bord

Development of touch down-multiplex PCR for the diagnosis of toxoplasmosis.

PURPOSE: The diagnosis of toxoplasmosis is challenging since conventional methods like culture and immunofluorescence are not universally available. Serology, which is used regularly might be negative during early phase of infection and in immunosuppressed patients or may remain positive for a long time. Several molecular tests have been used for the diagnosis of toxoplasmosis, but none of them have an internal control which would inform us regarding the presence of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) inhibitors thus, undermining the confidence of a laboratory physician. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We

The TOUCH program and natalizumab: Fundamental flaw in patient protection.

Many drugs have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 1993 for treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). One such drug is natalizumab (Tysabri, Biogen Idec and Elan pharmaceuticals) which has enjoyed great success in the management of MS since its re-introduction in 2006. One of the complications of using natalizumab is the risk of development of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). To mitigate the risk of PML development, Biogen Idec initiated the TOUCH program - this strategy helps monitor the disease. Clinical vigilance remains key in the

iPod touch-assisted instrumentation of the spine: a technical report.

BACKGROUND: Instrumentation of the spine depends on choosing the correct insertion angles to implant screws. Although modern image guidance facilitates precise instrumentation of the spine, the equipment is costly and availability is limited. Although most surgeons use lateral fluoroscopy to guide instrumentation in the sagittal plane, the lateromedial angulation is often chosen by estimation. To overcome the associated uncertainty, iPod touch-based applications for measuring angles can be used to assist with screw implantation. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of the iPod touch to adjust instr

Effects of different types of light touch on postural sway.

When a standing person applies a light finger touch to an external stable object, postural sway is reduced. We tested a hypothesis that two factors related to touch can induce this effect, the presence of a stable reference point and the modulation of contact forces leading to tissue deformation. Force platform signals were analyzed while subjects stood quietly with or without additional light touch to an external object (contact forces under 1 N). The point of touch on the body was manipulated. We also investigated the effects of active touch vs fixation of a finger at a point in external spa

Pars plana vitrectomy in the management of vitreous touch syndrome.

The management of three patients with aphakic bullous keratopathy by means of pars plana vitrectomy is described. The patients had previously undergone uneventful intracapsular cataract extraction with intact vitreous face. Eventual herniation of the vitreous into the anterior chamber with resultant corneal endothelial touch caused the corneal edema in all three cases. Pars plana vitrectomy resulted in resolution of photophobia and irritation. The visual acuity improved from 20/200, 20/200 and 20/70 to 20/70, 20/60 and 20/40 respectively. The central cornea was cleared of edema in all three ca

The ultrastructure of taste and touch receptors of the frog's taste organ.

The taste buds from fungiform papillae and the hard palate of frogs were investigated with the scanning and transmission electron microscopes. An immature pre-taste cell and a mature taste cell can be differentiated. Only the mature taste cell exhibits synaptic contact with the afferent taste fibre. Glandular and satellite supporting cells envelop the thin apical processes of the sensory cells. At the base of the taste disc up to 10 Merkel cells form a complex with nerve endings. There are two types of myelinated fibres, large and small. The small fibre innervates the taste cells, the thicker

"Finger-Touch Approach" for Novice Microsurgical Assistants: A Simulation Study.

BACKGROUND: Microsurgical procedures demand precise hand-eye coordination, yet the surgeon's hands often remain outside the visual field until instruments enter the microscope view, impairing spatial awareness. We developed the finger-touch approach (FTA) to provide an additional proprioceptive reference point, hypothesizing it would improve safety and confidence without compromising efficiency. METHODS: A simulation task was designed to replicate microsurgical suture-cutting assistance, one of the most common procedures performed by a microsurgery assistant. Touch DNA is predominantly transferred from leukocytes, not skin cells.

DNA extracted from touched surfaces is an important analyte in forensic casework, often leading to the identification of suspects. A common assumption underlying this approach is that touch DNA originates in skin cells of the touching individual. Here we test this assumption, using cell type-specific DNA methylation markers to determine the origins of touch DNA. Strikingly, hand swabs and touched objects contain only traces of skin DNA. The majority of hand swab and touch DNA originates in leukocytes (mostly neutrophils) and to a lesser extent in buccal cells, paralleling the composition of na

Normal force in natural active touch correlates with fingertip stiffness.

Through tactile sensations, we perceive the mechanical interactions between our body and the external world, which enable us to explore its physical properties such as shape, texture, hardness, and temperature. When we casually touch objects, we perceive their textures even without performing any specific task. Individuals employ different strategies when exploring an object with or without an explicit task. This study examined individual differences in baseline motion patterns. Skin characteristics significantly influence tactile perception and friction coefficients. Thus, it can be inferred

School-Based Surveillance of Respiratory Pathogens on "High-Touch" Surfaces.

In order to assess the presence of respiratory pathogens on "high-touch" surfaces and inform sanitation practices at schools, pre-selected surfaces in elementary schools in Seattle, WA, USA were sampled weekly and tested by RT-PCR for 25 viral respiratory pathogens (including SARS-CoV-2 retrospectively) and S. pneumoniae during 2019-2020 winter respiratory illness season. Viral pathogens (rhinovirus, adenovirus, influenza) known to cause respiratory illness were detected on commonly touched surfaces, especially wooden surfaces, and matched the patterns of circulating virus in the community.

Functional and structural brain differences associated with mirror-touch synaesthesia.

Observing touch is known to activate regions of the somatosensory cortex but the interpretation of this finding is controversial (e.g. does it reflect the simulated action of touching or the simulated reception of touch?). For most people, observing touch is not linked to reported experiences of feeling touch but in some people it is (mirror-touch synaesthetes). We conducted an fMRI study in which participants (mirror-touch synaesthetes, controls) watched movies of stimuli (face, dummy, object) being touched or approached. In addition we examined whether mirror touch synaesthesia is associated

Active vibration sensing unveils material features with a gentle touch.

Wave propagation is widely used in engineering and biology, because even small changes along a propagation path encode valuable information about the traversed medium. In this paper, we employ this concept in the context of vibrotactile object perception, a cornerstone problem in safe and effective human-robot interaction. We developed a robotic system that analyzes properties of grasped objects by injecting a controlled vibration through the grasped object, while measuring vibrations on both fingers and computing spectral residual changes. We investigate object-modulated responses in the freq
