Neuropathological studies of experimental toxocariasis in lead exposed mice.

Binghamton Heterogeneous stock mice intubated with embryonated eggs from the common parasite of dogs, Toxocara canis, display dramatic alterations in behavior. Many of these behavioral changes are markedly attenuated if mice are maintained also on a drinking solution containing lead acetate. The data presented here, however, show that the extensive neural degeneration of the CNS occurs after T. canis infection and that the nature and extent of this degeneration is similar, regardless of whether mice had been administered parasites alone or in combination with lead. Thus the neuropathological d

Ocular Toxocariasis Mimicking Persistent Fetal Vasculature in a Child.

Purpose: To report a case of ocular toxocariasis in a child initially suspected to have persistent fetal vasculature (PFV), highlighting the importance of accurate differential diagnosis in cases of retrolental membranes. Methods: A single case was reviewed. Results: A 4-year-old Guatemalan boy presented with a 3-week history of right eye irritation and visual acuity limited to counting fingers. Clinical examination revealed a retrolental membrane extending to the optic nerve, initially suggestive of PFV. Further investigation under anesthesia revealed a visually significant funnel-shaped vitr

Ophthalmic manifestation of bilateral ocular toxocariasis: a case-series.

PURPOSE: To explore the clinical features of bilateral ocular toxocariasis (OT). METHODS: In this case-series, the ocular characteristics and treatments of the patients diagnosed with bilateral OT from 2015 to 2024 were reviewed and analyzed. The influences of clinical manifestations on prognosis were evaluated. RESULTS: Ten patients aged 21 ± 15 years were included. In all the patients, the onset of the two eyes was asynchronous. The first-affected eyes (FAEs) had worse visual acuity than the second-affected eyes (SAEs) (paired t test, P = 0.024). Peripheral granulomas were observed in 16 e

Unilateral Vision Loss in a Child Revealing Ocular Toxocariasis.

Ocular toxocariasis is a parasitic infection caused by Toxocara canis or T. cati, typically affecting children and presenting as unilateral vision loss. This report describes a rare presentation of peripheral retinal vasculitis, a peripheral granuloma, and vitreoretinal traction in a seven-year-old child. A seven-year-old male presented with progressive visual loss in his left eye over three months. Ophthalmological examination revealed a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/20 in the right eye and counting fingers in the left eye. Fundus examination of the left eye showed peripheral retinal vas

Visceral Toxocariasis Presenting as Systemic-Onset Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

An 8-year-old boy presented with intermittent fever, abdominal pain and joint pain for 1 month. On examination, he had pallor, generalized lymphadenopathy, hepatomegaly and arthritis. Investigations revealed anemia, leucocytosis, hypereosinophilia and hypergammaglobulinemia, with an elevation of inflammatory markers. Initially, suspected as systemic-onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and on further probing, the child had geophagy and contact with dogs in the household. Ultrasonography of the abdomen showed multiple cystic lesions, and serology for Toxocara canis was positive; hence the child

Vasculitis secondary to anti-C1q antibodies induced by Toxocariasis.

INTRODUCTION: Vasculitides occurring during parasitic infection are rare and may imply different mechanisms. METHODS: A case report of cutaneous vasculitis and visceral damage during a larva migrans syndrome. RESULTS: We report the case of a 64-year-old man who developed a purpura along with fever, respiratory failure, abdominal pain and myalgia. Immunological screening showed a high titer of both antinuclear antibodies and anti-double-stranded DNA antibodies along with anti-C1q antibodies. Toxocara canis serology returned highly positive with a positive western-blot. The use of antiparasiti

Eosinophilic pneumonia due to toxocariasis: an adult case report.

Toxocara is a roundworm, a common parasite of dogs (T. canis) and cats (T. cati). Toxocariasis or Visceral larva migrans (VLM) are diseases caused by the larvae of Toxocara sp., which may involve many organs, but pulmonary symptoms such as coughing and wheezing and allergic symptoms are seen in more than 80% of patients. It is known that, although the risk of infection is present, the worldwide diagnosis of toxocariasis is difficult since clinical and laboratory data provide insufficient evidence for the diagnosis. Nowadays, the diagnosis of toxocariasis is performed by serologic methods. We d

Toxocariasis: clinical aspects, epidemiology, medical ecology, and molecular aspects.

Toxocariasis is caused by a series of related nematode species (ascarids) that routinely infect dogs and cats throughout the world. The eggs from these ascarids are common environmental contaminants of human habitation, due largely to the fact that many kinds of dogs and cats serve as pets, while countless others run wild throughout the streets of most urban centers. The eggs, present in dog and cat feces, become infectious within weeks after they are deposited in the local environment (e.g., sandboxes, city parks, and public beaches, etc.). Humans, particularly children, frequently ingest the

Early pars plana vitrectomy in chronic endophthalmitis of toxocariasis.

Pars plana vitrectomy was performed in 12 eyes affected with chronic endophthalmitis in patients 4-38 years of age. In 3 cases the indication was severe vitreitis and the surgical response was excellent. The other 9 eyes were operated upon during the cicatricial and sequelae stages, and the results were better the earlier surgery was performed. Lensectomy was associated in 5 cases. Good anatomical results were obtained in 9 eyes (75%); the other 3 (25%) were failures because of complications. Visual acuity improved after vitrectomy in 8 cases (66%), remained the same in 1 and became worse in t

[Toxocariasis in childhood. Visceral larva migrans syndrome (author's transl)].

A case of toxocariasis in a 2(6)/12 years old boy is described. The visceral larva migrans syndrome usually is seen in preschool children. Clinical symptoms were characterised by eosinophilia of more than 30%, leukocytosis, hepatomegaly, pulmonary infiltrations, and hypergammaglobulinaemia. There may be myocardial, ocular or central nervous system involvement, and a few affected children have died. The disease is caused by invasion of the body tissues by Toxocara canis or cati larvae, often ingested by contaminated dirt. The developmental cycle and the migration of the Toxocara larvae in the h

Pica patterns, toxocariasis, and elevated blood lead in children.

Blood samples were obtained during a lead screening program from 100 children aged 1-6 years in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, to determine whether there was any association between specific forms of pica and infection with Toxocara canis, the principal cause of visceral larva migrans in the United States, or elevated blood lead levels. Significant associations were found between: 1) feces, soil, or grass pica and Toxocara infection; 2) paint or plaster pica and elevated blood lead; and 3) dog ownership and Toxocara infection. These findings suggest that an accurate pica history may be useful

[Toxocariasis in calves. Recent diagnosis and treatment (author's transl)].

Toxocara vitulorum, a parasite of suckling calves, was again diagnosed in Belgium in imported cattle of French origin. The infectious larvae are present in the milk and colostrum; they do not undergo further migration in the tissues of calves. This form of transmammary migration is not specific of T. vitulorum, but was also reported in S. ransomi in pigs. Treatment with levamisole at a dosage of 5 mg/kg results in complete disappearance of the worms. In addition to the cycles, the elements of a specific parasitological diagnosis are also described.

Toxocariasis: a silent threat with a progressive public health impact.

BACKGROUND: Toxocariasis is a neglected parasitic zoonosis that afflicts millions of the pediatric and adolescent populations worldwide, especially in impoverished communities. This disease is caused by infection with the larvae of Toxocara canis and T. cati, the most ubiquitous intestinal nematode parasite in dogs and cats, respectively. In this article, recent advances in the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis and pharmacotherapies that have been used in the treatment of toxocariasis are reviewed. MAIN TEXT: Over the past two decades, we have come far in our understanding of the

[A case of secondary retinal detachment caused by ocular toxocariasis].

PURPOSE: We report a case with bullous retinal detachment secondary to ocular toxocariasis. CASE: A 68-year-old man, who was a professional dog breeder, visited an ophthalmologist because of visual field defect in the left eye, and was referred to our clinic. The patient had bilateral cataract and bullous retinal detachment in the left eye. Fundus examinations after cataract surgery revealed no break but a white mass in the temporal lower peripheral retina of the left eye. Initial treatment with systemic corticosteroids was ineffective. Retinal detachment was treated by retinal cryocoagulatio

[The seroepidemiology of toxocariasis in an opisthorchiasis focus in the western Siberian region].

Seroprevalence to Toxocara antigens was studied among Novosibirsk inhabitants and a focus of toxocariasis was found in the southern regions of west Siberia. Analyzing the sera of opisthorchiasis patients revealed antibodies to Toxocara antigens, with high titers (1:800 or more) in 1.80% of cases. Immunoblotting of these sera and those from patients with toxocariasis and opisthorchiasis, which were seropositive in one of the above helminths showed that there were mixed human infections with Toxocara and Opisthorchis in this area.
