Evaluation of novel technique for studying ureteral function in vivo.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Knowledge of the ureteral response to instrumentation is limited. Ureterodynamic parameters such as intraureteral pressure, conduction velocity, direction of peristalsis, and electromyography have been measured using a variety of methods; however, these techniques are impractical for routine clinical use. The aim of this study was to evaluate a new commercial ureteral pressure transducer catheter, which records peristaltic frequency, conduction velocity, and intraureteral pressure. This device was assessed in an animal model and in patients who had undergone ureteroscop

Pattern of tongue pressure on hard palate during swallowing.

Contact of the tongue against the hard palate plays an important role in swallowing. This study aimed to clarify the pattern of contact between the tongue and hard palate by analyzing tongue pressure produced in swallowing 15 ml of water by healthy subjects wearing an experimental palatal plate with seven pressure sensors. Tongue pressure was generated initially by close contact with the anteriomedian part of the hard palate, then with the circumferential part, and finally softly with the posteriomedian part. Tongue pressure reached a peak quickly, then decreased gradually before disappearing

Measurements of pressure on the sole of the foot in plaster of Paris casts on the lower leg.

Pressure on the sole of the foot inside three different types of plaster cast, used in treatment of fracture of the lower leg, was measured on six normal persons. No significant difference was found between these pressures in below-knee plaster, full length plaster including the thigh and patellar-tendon-bearing plaster. Only occasionally a relief in pressure was found in patellar-tendon-bearing plasters.

Continuous pressure measurements in the pharynx and esophagus during sleep in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

Pressure measurements were made preoperatively at six sites in the pharynx and esophagus in 18 obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) patients, 3 social snorers, and 6 healthy normal controls. Repeat measurements were made approximately 2 months after uvulopalatopharyngoglossoplasty (UPPGP) in 10 of the OSAS patients. The pressure transducers were contained in a thin silicone tube inserted through one nostril, and measurements were made both in the awake state and throughout a night's sleep. Oxygen saturation was also continuously recorded and, additionally, nasal and oral airflow measurement

Flow Pressure Characteristics of the Ahmed Glaucoma Valve and Possible Effect of Entrapped Air in the Tube.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the pressure characteristics of the Ahmed Glaucoma Valve (AGV) and possible effects of air trapped in the tube. METHOD: Physiologic saline was pumped through 17 AGVs using a syringe infusion pump, and the flow pressure was measured by a set of pressure transducers. During the infusion at a rate of 2 µL/minute, the pressure measurement was repeated twice in each AGV to determine the repriming pressures with/without air (1 µL) in the tube. RESULTS: After a pressure surge occurred during the initial priming, the pressure decreased suddenly and th

Development of a miniaturized HIFU device for glaucoma treatment with conformal coagulation of the ciliary bodies.

This study examined the feasibility of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for glaucoma treatment with conformal coagulation of the ciliary bodies (CB). A miniaturized high frequency (21 MHz) device was developed, based on the geometry of the eye and adapted to the anatomy of the rabbit eyeball. Six line-focus lesions were distributed along a circle and produced by six cylindrical transducers. To be conformal, the numerical model predicted an intensity of 6.9 W/cm(2), with exposure duration of 3 s ON (powered per sector). In vivo experiments were conducted on two rabbits. A significant in

Intraoperative measurement of pharynx/esophagus retraction during anterior cervical surgery. Part I: pressure.

Temporary dysphagia after anterior cervical discectomy (ACD) is common. However, its mechanism is poorly understood. Pressure induced by retractor blades onto pharynx/esophagus were measured intraoperatively in order to gain more information regarding traumatization of the pharynx/esophagus wall. Thirty-one patients underwent anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) for degenerative disc disease. An online pressure transducer was applied to the rear side of the medial retractor blade (epi-esophageal-pressure, epi-P) and a cylindric, inflatable transducer was preoperatively inserted into

Impaired baroreflex function in mice overexpressing alpha-synuclein.

Cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction, such as orthostatic hypotension consequent to baroreflex failure and cardiac sympathetic denervation, is frequently observed in the synucleinopathy Parkinson's disease (PD). In the present study, the baroreceptor reflex was assessed in mice overexpressing human wildtype alpha-synuclein (Thy1-aSyn), a genetic mouse model of synucleinopathy. The beat-to-beat change in heart rate (HR), computed from R-R interval, in relation to blood pressure was measured in anesthetized and conscious mice equipped with arterial blood pressure telemetry transducers during tra

Eustachian tube pressure equilibration. Temporal analysis of pressure changes based on direct physiological recordings with an intact tympanic membrane.

Eustachian tube function is important in pressure regulation of the middle ear. The efficacy or magnitude of pressure equilibration by tube openings should be determined by the gradient between middle ear and ambient pressure, but in theory also the duration of the tube opening may play a role. This study employed direct measurements of middle ear pressure in patients, who after parotidectomy had a catheter inserted into the mastoid with a pressure transducer connected. Thus, monitoring of the middle ear pressure in response to experimentally induced pressure changes could be performed under p

A new device for measuring esophageal variceal pressure.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal varices are a frequent source of bleeding in patients with cirrhosis. Elevated intravariceal pressure is associated with variceal bleeding. There is no simple, easy-to-use device for noninvasive measurement of intravariceal pressure. The purposes of this study were to develop a noninvasive method for measuring intravariceal pressure, and to develop a model of esophageal varices that can be used to test this pressure measurement device. METHODS: A variceal pressure measurement device was constructed by placing a 20 MHz US transducer in a latex balloon catheter sheath and

Direct bone conduction stimulation: Ipsilateral effect of different transducer attachments in active transcutaneous devices.

Active transcutaneous bone conduction devices, where the transducer is implanted, are used for rehabilitation of hearing impaired patients by directly stimulating the skull bone. The transducer and the way it is attached to the bone play a central role in the design of such devices. The actual effect of varying the contact to bone has not been addressed yet. The aim of this study is therefore to compare how different attachment methods of the transducer to the bone for direct stimulation affect the ear canal sound pressure and vibration transmission to the ipsilateral cochlea. Three different

A Dual-mode Ultrasound Transducer Based on Textured Ceramic for Image-guided Interstitial Ablationn.

Ultrasound image-guided interstitial ablation is an economical and effective way in the management of unresectable tumors and other pathologically compromised tissues. However, in clinical practice, extracorporeal ultrasound imaging guidance presents challenges in target localization, while interstitial ultrasound imaging increases system complexity. The integrated dual-mode transducer that combines imaging and therapeutic capabilities emerges as an optimal solution. Due to inherent limitations of piezoelectric materials-such as the trade-offs among piezoelectric and dielectric properties-conv

Integration of adeno-associated virus vectors in CD34+ human hematopoietic progenitor cells after transduction.

Gene transfer vectors based on adeno-associated virus (AAV) appear promising because of their high transduction frequencies regardless of cell cycle status and ability to integrate into chromosomal DNA. We tested AAV-mediated gene transfer into a panel of human bone marrow or umbilical cord-derived CD34+ hematopoietic progenitor cells, using vectors encoding several transgenes under the control of viral and cellular promoters. Gene transfer was evaluated by (1) chromosomal integration of vector sequences and (2) analysis of transgene expression. Southern hybridization and fluorescence in situ

Bone conduction pathways confer directional cues to salamanders.

Sound and vibration are generated by mechanical disturbances within the environment, and the ability to detect and localize these acoustic cues is generally important for survival, as suggested by the early emergence of inherently directional otolithic ears in vertebrate evolutionary history. However, fossil evidence indicates that the water-adapted ear of early terrestrial tetrapods lacked specialized peripheral structures to transduce sound pressure (e.g. tympana). Therefore, early terrestrial hearing should have required nontympanic (or extratympanic) mechanisms for sound detection and loca

Choline acetyltransferase activity parallels the pressure gradient in the feline pharyngo-esophageal region.

Pressures generated by the pharyngeal constrictor muscles and proximal esophagus involve acetylcholine-induced muscle contractions. We hypothesized that the pharyngo-esophageal pressure gradient is related to choline acetyltransferase activity. In nine anesthetized cats, hypopharyngeal pressure and proximal esophageal pressure were recorded with a solid state transducer assembly. Enzymatic activities in the thyropharyngeus, cricopharyngeus, and proximal esophageal muscles were measured. Hypopharyngeal pressure was higher than the proximal esophagus (p < 0.01), and choline acetyltransferase act

Pressure monitoring inside Meckel's cave during percutaneous microcompression of gasserian ganglion.

During percutaneous microcompression of the gasserian ganglion for the relief of trigeminal neuralgia, a computerized technique for monitoring the pressure inside Meckel's cave was employed in 22 patients. A dedicated transducer connected to a computer records the balloon inflation pressure. Its variations are discernible within tenths of a bar and are plotted in relation to time. The intraoperative pressure inside Meckel's cave is from 0.9 to 2.4 bars. When pressure was low, there was recurrence of pain. The highest values of pressure (1.9-2.4 bars) were observed in most of the patients suffe
