Transposition of great arteries (TGA) is a common congenital heart disease. Left ventricle (LV) is rapidly regressing and pulmonary artery banding (PAB) is utilized to retrain the undeveloped LV. Hence, it offered a unique human disease model to investigate the process of LV hypertrophy under pressure overload. Eight late referred children with TGA were enrolled. OBJECTIVE: The beta(2)-transferrin assay is a specific method to identify cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Hitherto, this test has not been widely used for the routine screening of patients with suspected CSF leakage. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical relevance of the identification of beta(2)-transferrin by comparing the test results with other diagnostic measures and intraoperative findings.

A significant increase in the occurrence of the transferrin C2 genetic subtype has been found in patients with Alzheimer's disease. A study was conducted to evaluate factors which might influence the prognosis of persons with pneumonia owing to Streptococcus pneumoniae. Serum iron, total iron binding capacity and unbound iron binding capacity (UIBC), were evaluated in 35 such patients. Of the 10 patients with UIBC levels less than 130 micrograms per dl on admission to the hospital, six died, three had complications, and only one recovered uneventfully.
