Impact of a Perioperative Smoking and Alcohol Cessation Intervention on Health-related Quality of Life in Patients Undergoing Radical Cystectomy: A Randomised Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The impact of a smoking and alcohol cessation intervention on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) following radical cystectomy (RC) is unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a 6-wk perioperative smoking and/or alcohol cessation intervention on HRQoL. A secondary objective was to assess the difference in HRQoL between patients with more than two and those with fewer complications. METHODS: From 2014 to 2018, 104 patients referred to RC who smoked daily or consumed at least three alcohol units per day were enrolled in a multicentre randomised clinical t

Predictors of physical activity among rural adults following cardiac rehabilitation.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: Cardiac rehabilitation aims to reduce the likelihood of recurrent cardiac events through physical activity (PA) and education. There is limited understanding about the predictors of physical activity behavior in rural adults beyond rehabilitation. This study explored predictors of regular physical activity in rural adults, 6-12 months post cardiac rehabilitation. Research Method/Design: A self-report questionnaire (quantitative cross-sectional design) was mailed to a simple random sample of rural South Australians who previously participated in cardiac rehabilitation (n = 31

Interventions That Support Lifestyle Behavior Change for Secondary Prevention of Stroke: A Scoping Review.

Lifestyle behavioral change is a critical component for secondary prevention of stroke. Although evidence for the effectiveness of lifestyle behavior change is growing, methods to promote and maintain behavior change remain unclear. In this review, we aimed to synthesize the evidence for lifestyle behavior change interventions among patients living with stroke or transient ischemic attack. We searched 7 databases to identify studies, including randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental, and longitudinal studies examining changes in cardiovascular risk factors. Data were extracted regardi

Prevention of skin cancer in primary healthcare: an evaluation of three different prevention effort levels and the applicability of a phototest.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The high skin cancer incidence in western society, and its known association with sun exposure habits, makes the area an important target for prevention. We investigated, in a primary healthcare setting, differentiated levels of prevention efforts directed at the propensity of the patient to change his/her sun habits, sun protection behaviour, and attitudes, after information intervention. Additionally, the impact of the performance of a phototest to determine individual sun sensitivity was evaluated. METHODS: 308 patients visiting a primary healthcare centre in southern

Comparison of Interventional Methods to Motivate and Change the Behavioural Stage of Smokers to Quit Smoking- A Hospital Based Randomised Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Addictions can be beaten if started off with a true motivation to quit it. Enhancing motivation is an important part of overall treatment for smoking cessation as it increases a smoker's courage and enthusiasm to quit smoke. This study aimed to assess effectiveness of various interventional methods to motivate unmotivated smokers with a focus on changing behavioural stage of  smokers to quit. METHODOLOGY: A single blinded trial was conducted at the outpatient department of ITS dental college and hospital among precontemplation stage smokers allocated into 4 groups and given interve

Comparison of factors of the subjective psychological condition of hospitalized individuals with schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders, or affective disorders: associations between illness perception, quality of life, affective and anxiety symptom severity, and readiness to change.

Illness perception in mental health disorders can affect prognosis and well-being. According to the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change, mental illness involves repetitive behavioral patterns that gradually change throughout the therapeutic process, during which progressing to stages of higher readiness to change is considered advantageous. The current study examined correlations between illness perception, readiness to change, quality of life, and the severity of depression and anxiety in hospitalized individuals with psychotic disorders or affective disorders. Data from 110 individuals

Shades of Contemplation: HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Decision-Making among Young Women in South Africa.

Expanding women's awareness of and access to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is key to enhancing its uptake, yet young women face difficulties in deciding whether to initiate any form of PrEP. Understanding factors that shape decision-making to initiate PrEP can support uptake and continuation. The Masibambane ("Let us work together") pilot in eThekwini (Durban), South Africa, compared a gender-enhanced (GE) online group workshop (N = 50) to an "individual access" (IA) control condition (N = 50) for women (ages 18-25 years). Both conditions aimed to increase knowledge and motivation to ini

Develop a personalised serious game applet for smoking cessation: protocol for enterprise-based cluster randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use causes approximately 8 million deaths worldwide each year. Against the backdrop of a rapidly expanding game market, there is growing potential to develop tailored gaming interventions for smoking cessation. This study protocol describes the development of a personalised Serious Game Applet based on an integrated TTM-PMT-HAPA framework (Transtheoretical Model, Protection Motivation Theory, Health Action Process Approach) and evaluates its effectiveness compared with conventionalShort Messaging Service (SMS) -based smoking cessation interventions. METHODS AND ANALYSIS:

The prognostic role of emotion regulation dynamics in the treatment of major depressive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The potential prognostic role of emotion regulation in the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) has been highlighted by transtheoretical literature and supported by promising empirical findings. The majority of the literature is based on self-report observations at a single snapshot, thus little is known about the prognostic value of moment-to-moment dynamic evolvement of emotion. The present study is the first to examine the prognostic value of both intra- and interpersonal, moment-to-moment emotion regulation dynamics, and the potential moderating effect of the type of tre

Sustaining physical activity following participation in a joint pain exercise and education rehabilitation programme; a qualitative longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal conditions are leading contributors to global disability and place a significant economic burden on health systems. Optimal physical activity is a key recommended strategy for managing musculoskeletal conditions, yet many individuals struggle to sustain activity levels following the completion of exercise rehabilitation programmes. Identifying and understanding the factors that influence sustained physical activity may aid intervention design and benefit future patients. The aim of the study was therefore to explore the evolving needs of participants completing a jo

Tobacco Cessation and Prevention Interventions for Sexual and/or Gender Minority-Identified People and the Theories That Underpin Them: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: This scoping review takes stock of the social and behavior change theories that have underpinned tobacco interventions tailored to sexual and/or gender minority (SGM) people and reflects on the need to target contextually based drivers of SGM tobacco use inequities. AIMS AND METHODS: Data sources were Medline (Ovid), Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar (January 01, 1946 to October 27, 2022). Peer-reviewed publications in English from anywhere in the world describing SGM-tailored tobacco cessation and/or prevention interventions were independently identified by a librarian and scr

Design and rationale of the my heart counts cardiovascular health study: a large-scale, fully digital biobank, and randomized trial of large language model-driven coaching of physical activity.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of global morbidity and mortality. The original My Heart Counts smartphone application demonstrated the feasibility of large-scale, fully digital recruitment and trial conduct, but was limited by platform exclusivity and the need for human experts to create text-based behavioral interventions. METHODS: The next-generation My Heart Counts smartphone application is a prospective, observational cohort study with an embedded randomized crossover trial, evaluating personalized text-based coaching prompts, available in both English and Sp

TRAQ in clinical practice: A narrative review for health care transition readiness.

BACKGROUND: Advances in medical care have dramatically improved survival rates for children and youth with special health care needs (SHCN), with more than 90% now reaching adulthood. As a result, pediatric-to-adult health care transition has become a critical component of lifespan care. Despite national consensus recommendations, fewer than one in four adolescents receive the transition services needed to prepare them for adult-oriented care. Standardized, validated instruments to assess and promote transition readiness are essential to close this gap. OBJECTIVE: This review describes the pr

'Place' and clinical reasoning development in context: An ethnographic case study.

INTRODUCTION: Place-Based Medical Education (PBME) aims for more physicians who are better prepared to serve medically underserved communities. However, discussions about the role of 'place' in PBME remain largely conceptual, with limited empirical evidence. In a previous scoping review, we identified a lack of research examining how distinct features of place influence the development of Clinical Reasoning (CR) and proposed the 'HARD' framework to guide future studies. The current study builds on this work to explain how place impacts the development of clinical reasoning in medical students.
