Comparative Morphology of Island and Inland Agastache rugosa and Their Gastroprotective Effects in EtOH/HCl-Induced Gastric Mucosal Gastritis.

Agastache rugosa Kuntze (Lamiaceae; Labiatae), a medicinal and functional herb used to treat gastrointestinal diseases, grows well both on islands and inland areas in South Korea. Thus, we aimed to reveal the morphological and micromorphological differences between A. rugosa grown on island and inland areas and their pharmacological effects on gastritis in an animal model by combining morphological and mass spectrophotometric analyses. Morphological analysis showed that island A. rugosa had slightly smaller plants and leaves than inland plants; however, the density of all types of trichomes on

Homologs of SCAR/WAVE complex components are required for epidermal cell morphogenesis in rice.

Filamentous actins (F-actins) play a vital role in epidermal cell morphogenesis. However, a limited number of studies have examined actin-dependent leaf epidermal cell morphogenesis events in rice. In this study, two recessive mutants were isolated: less pronounced lobe epidermal cell2-1 (lpl2-1) and lpl3-1, whose leaf and stem epidermis developed a smooth surface, with fewer serrated pavement cell (PC) lobes, and decreased papillae. The lpl2-1 also exhibited irregular stomata patterns, reduced plant height, and short panicles and roots. Molecular genetic studies demonstrated that LPL2 and LPL

Jasmonic acid enhances plant cyanogenesis and resistance to herbivory in lima bean.

Jasmonic acid (JA) is a natural plant hormone ubiquitously distributed in plants and centrally involved in the induction of direct and indirect plant defenses. Defenses up-regulated by this hormone include trichomes--a direct, mechanical defense--and alkaloids--a direct chemical defense--as well as two indirect chemical defenses: volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and extrafloral nectar (EFN). Plant cyanogenesis--the release of toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) from preformed cyanogenic precursors in fruits, leaves, and seeds of many plants--is recognized as a direct, constitutive plant defensive tr

Two-step Gelatin Embedding Preserves Fibrocartilage Morphology, Enthesis, and Cartilage Stain of Bone Joints.

Maintaining the native morphology and characteristic staining patterns of dissected tissues is critical for histological analysis. Reliable preservation enables accurate assessment of structural integrity and cellular components, which is fundamental to identifying viable avenues for tissue regeneration and improving clinical outcomes. Acknowledging the constraints of conventional paraffin embedding, we propose an alternative method employing gelatin as an embedding medium. Gelatin is a natural, water-soluble protein derived from collagen, known for its biocompatibility. As a hydrogel, it prov

The HD-ZIP IV transcription factor GL2-LIKE regulates male flowering time and fertility in cucumber.

Cucumber is dioecious by nature, having both male and female flowers, and is a model system for unisexual flower development. Knowledge related to male flowering is limited, but it is reported to be regulated by transcription factors and hormone signals. Here, we report functional characterization of the cucumber (Cucumis sativus) GL2-LIKE gene, which encodes a homeodomain leucine zipper (HD-ZIP) IV transcription factor that plays an important role in regulating male flower development. Spatial-temporal expression analyses revealed high-level expression of CsGL2-LIKE in the male flower buds an

Rice TUTOU1 Encodes a Suppressor of cAMP Receptor-Like Protein That Is Important for Actin Organization and Panicle Development.

Panicle development, a key event in rice (Oryza sativa) reproduction and a critical determinant of grain yield, forms a branched structure containing multiple spikelets. Genetic and environmental factors can perturb panicle development, causing panicles to degenerate and producing characteristic whitish, small spikelets with severely reduced fertility and yield; however, little is known about the molecular basis of the formation of degenerating panicles in rice. Here, we report the identification and characterization of the rice panicle degenerative mutant tutou1 (tut1), which shows severe def

Responses of Biofilm-Forming Halophilic Calothrix and Coelastrella Strains to Environmental Stressors Associated with Climate Change.

Research into the effects of environmental stressors associated with global climate change (GCC) on cyanobacteria and microalgae is scarce, with bloom-forming planktonic cyanobacteria being the exception. This study aimed to address the issue by assessing morphological and biochemical changes in cyanobacterial and microalgal cells exposed to an increased temperature (T), ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration. The strains selected were Calothrix sp. SLM0211 and Coelastrella sp. SLM0503, which were isolated from a coastal environment in the central Mediterranean isla

Ecophysiological, anatomical, and apigenin changes due to uptake and accumulation of cadmium in Matricaria chamomilla L. flowers in hydroponics.

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most important heavy metals in the environment which has several effects on the morphology, physiology, and anatomy of plants. It is a mobile heavy metal that can be transferred easily into plants, thus entering into the human food chain. Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.) as an important medicinal plant can uptake and accumulate Cd in its root and aerial organs. In this research, the effects of different concentrations of Cd (90, 180, and 360 μM) were investigated on the growth parameters, anatomical features, and enzymatic antioxidant activities in flowers of cha

Combination of histochemical analyses and micro-MRI reveals regional changes of the murine cervix in preparation for labor.

The cervix is responsible for maintaining pregnancy, and its timely remodeling is essential for the proper delivery of a baby. Cervical insufficiency, or "weakness", may lead to preterm birth, which causes infant morbidities and mortalities worldwide. We used a mouse model of pregnancy and term labor, to examine the cervical structure by histology (Masson Trichome and Picrosirius Red staining), immunohistochemistry (Hyaluronic Acid Binding Protein/HABP), and ex-vivo MRI (T2-weighted and diffusion tensor imaging), focusing on two regions of the cervix (i.e., endocervix and ectocervix). AtGA3ox2, a key gene responsible for bioactive gibberellin biosynthesis, is regulated during embryogenesis by LEAFY COTYLEDON2 and FUSCA3 in Arabidopsis.

Embryonic regulators LEC2 (LEAFY COTYLEDON2) and FUS3 (FUSCA3) are involved in multiple aspects of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) seed development, including repression of leaf traits and premature germination and activation of seed storage protein genes. In this study, we show that gibberellin (GA) hormone biosynthesis is regulated by LEC2 and FUS3 pathways. The level of bioactive GAs is increased in immature seeds of lec2 and fus3 mutants relative to wild-type level. In addition, we show that the formation of ectopic trichome cells on lec2 and fus3 embryos is a GA-dependent process as in

Replicated repurposing of an ancestral transcriptional complex in land plants.

In flowering plants, transcriptional complexes with a common composition have been found to regulate multiple pathways in the epidermal cell layer, including the production of flavonoid pigments and the differentiation of trichomes and root hairs. These complexes are composed of transcription factors from the MYB and bHLH families along with a WDR scaffold protein (MBW complexes). The MYB member has been found to be the most pathway-specific component of the complex, and modifications to these MYB genes are overrepresented in studies investigating the genetic basis of differences in pigmentati

Integrated metabolomic and transcriptomic analysis of Camellia sinensis var. pubilimba 'Rucheng Baimaocha' reveals distinct flavonoid and strictinin biosynthesis.

BACKGROUND: 'Rucheng Baimaocha' (RCBMC) is a traditional tea landrace found in Hunan Province, China. Its morphological characteristics differ substantially from those of the other cultivars, featuring larger mature leaves with thicker cuticle layers. Both young buds and leaf undersides are densely covered in silvery-white trichomes, indicating that RCBMC has a distinct metabolite composition compared to other cultivars. To elucidate the metabolic profile differences and their underlying molecular mechanisms, we conducted an integrated metabolomic and transcriptomic analysis of RCBMC and repre

A dual pollination strategy combining perfume attraction and food deception in Galeandra blanchetii E.S. Rand (Orchidaceae).

The evolutionary origin of the perfume flower syndrome remains unclear. Orchids of the subtribe Catasetinae help elucidate the evolution of this syndrome, but knowledge gaps regarding the pollination biology of Galeandra hinder a full understanding of the process. This study addresses this gap by investigating G. blanchetii, an epiphytic Catasetinae species endemic to Brazil. We explored its floral and reproductive biology, including floral anatomy, scent characterization and pollinator mechanical fit, to clarify the role of floral signals in pollinator attraction. We found epidermal osmophore

Cr-induced cellular injury and necrosis in Glycine max L.: Biochemical mechanism of oxidative damage in chloroplast.

Chromium-induced toxicity and mechanisms of cell death involved in plants are yet to be fully elucidated. To understand the events of these processes, the stress response of the soybean plant using trivalent and hexavalent chromium compounds, namely, basic chromium sulphate (BCS) and potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) was investigated. The leaf surface morphology for stomatal aperture, wax deposition and presence of trichomes for chromium accumulation was examined by SEM-EDAX and light microscopy. The leaf mesophyll cell integrity was identified by trypan blue staining; chlorophyll autofluorescenc

The Structure of the Chemotype Determining Locus in Cannabis sativa.

The chemical phenotype (chemotype) of Cannabis sativa is defined by the ratio of cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) to Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA). Although the Mendelian segregation of these traits suggests a single-locus biallelic system, recent sequencing and phylogenetic evidence indicate they are encoded by two distinct, tightly linked genes. The precise genomic architecture of this region, known as the B locus, has remained poorly defined. In this study, we analyzed recently released high-quality Cannabis reference genomes to resolve the structure of the B locus. Our results demonstrate

Single-Cell Insights into Medicinal Plant Development and Metabolism.

Medicinal plants are major sources of therapeutic natural products, yet the cell-type-specific organization that governs metabolite biosynthesis, transport, and storage remains imperfectly resolved by organ-level omics. This review synthesizes studies published up to June 2026 that used single-cell, single-nucleus, spatial, metabolomic, and epigenomic approaches to medicinal plant systems, following a PRISMA-guided literature search across PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and CNKI. Emerging evidence shows that specialized metabolism is organized through discrete and often rare cell populations,

Pruritic and nociceptive sensations and dysesthesias from a spicule of cowhage.

Although the trichomes (spicules) of a pod of cowhage (Mucuna pruriens) are known to evoke a histamine-independent itch that is mediated by a cysteine protease, little is known of the itch and accompanying nociceptive sensations evoked by a single spicule and the enhanced itch and pain that can occur in the surrounding skin. The tip of a single spicule applied to the forearm of 45 subjects typically evoked 1) itch accompanied by nociceptive sensations (NS) of pricking/stinging and, to a lesser extent, burning, and 2) one or more areas of cutaneous dysesthesia characterized by hyperknesis (enha

The effect of induced polyploidy on phytochemistry, cellular organelles and the expression of genes involved in thymol and carvacrol biosynthetic pathway in thyme (Thymus vulgaris).

Induced polyploidy usually results in larger vegetative and reproductive plant organs. In order to study the effect of chromosome doubling on Thymus vulgaris, three levels of colchicine concentration including 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5% (w/v) were applied for 6, 12 and 24 hours on apical meristem of 2- and 4-leaf seedlings. Ploidy level was evaluated by flow cytometry and microscopic chromosome counting. Chemical composition of essential oils extracted by hydro-distillation was analyzed by gas Chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and gas Chromatography (GC).
