Trichophyton rubrum is a dermatophyte responsible for the majority of human superficial mycoses. We report the case of a 36-year-old Senegalese male with non-scarring alopecia of the scalp, including nodules and pustules, diagnosed as tinea capitis caused by Trichophyton soudanense. This dermatophyte is endemic in Central Africa and is becoming more frequent in Europe because of immigration. It has seldom been isolated in Italy. Tinea capitis is common in childhood and it is rare in adults, in which female sex is preferred. In adults, alopecic patches have to be distinguished from those due to other dermatoses inducing alopecia.

A worldwide selection of more than 200 isolates of the anthropophilic dermatophyte Trichophyton rubrum were analysed using seven microsatellite markers. Fifty-five multilocus genotypes were recognized, allowing a subdivision of the species into two populations. A case of widespread tinea due to Trichophyton mentagrophytes is described. A healthy 75-year-old woman presented with 134 typical tinea corporis and faciei lesions previously treated with topical steroids. The diagnosis was based on direct mycologic examination and culture. Trichophytosis is a rare diagnosis in dogs in Ontario, but recently 4 dogs with a scaling and crusting, alopecic, facial dermatitis have been so diagnosed. In all cases, the histopathological findings of severe epidermal and follicular interface dermatitis, accompanied by an acantholytic intraepidermal pustular dermatitis suggested an immune-mediated disease.

BACKGROUND: Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes human-type (synonym, Trichophyton interdigitale (anthropophilic)) are major causative pathogens of tinea unguium. For suitable diagnosis and treatment, rapid and accurate identification of etiologic agents in clinical samples using reliable molecular based method is required.
OBJECTIVE: For identification of organisms causing tinea unguium, we developed a new real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with a pan-fungal primer set and probe, as well as specific primer sets and probes for T. rubrum and T. mentagrophytes human-type.

Trichophyton rubrum is an important causative agent of superficial mycoses worldwide. We report a case of tinea corporis on amputated leg stump caused by Trichophyton rubrum. The patient, a 54-year-old male, experienced a serious traffic accident, resulted his right leg amputated 3 years ago.
