The mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON) contaminates animal feed worldwide, frequently resulting in poor performance and economic losses. Data concerning the effects on poultry health or focusing on intestinal toxicity or the response to oxidative stress are scarce. Also, there is a need for strategies to mitigate the negative effects of DON. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Lactobacillus spp. treatments on the intestine, liver and kidney of poultry fed a DON-contaminated diet. To achieve this aim, histological, morphometrical and histochemical assays were performed. The oxidative str

The exquisitely cytotoxic macrolides, satratoxins G and H, have been reisolated from a solvent extract of a rice culture inoculated with Stachybotrys chartarum to be used as high-purity reference compounds for analytical analyses. Extensive chromatographic separation realized the compounds that were fully recharacterized in two solvents by 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopy, revealing some discrepancies in the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data as compared with the previously reported values found in the literature. Detailed spectra are provided in order to aid future identification and dereplicat

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a common mycotoxin produced by Fusarium sp. in cereals and foods. Ingestion of contaminated foodstuffs can cause digestive disorders in various animals. Many researchers focus on its toxicity and the pathological damage and absorptive function in the intestines. However, the effect of DON on gastric function is still unclear. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the impact of DON on gastric secretion. Rats were gavaged with DON at the dose of 0, 1, 5, and 25 mg/kg of body weight (bw). Gastric fluids were gathered by pylorus ligation 0.5 h after DON exposur

The important cereal pathogen Fusarium graminearum is not only able to produce trichothecene toxins, like deoxynivalenol, but also the plant hormone auxin (indole-3-acetic acid, IAA). Highly elevated levels of IAA and auxin derivatives such as IAA-glucoside or IAA amino-acid conjugates were observed in the susceptible wheat cultivar Apogee infected with F. graminearum. We report here that the fungal pathogen can hydrolyse tryptamine-derived hydroxycinnamic acid amides produced in high amounts during plant defence and is able to convert the released tryptamine in high yield into IAA. We investi

The ribotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON) is a trichothecene found on cereals responsible for mycotoxicosis in both humans and farm animals. DON toxicity is characterized by reduced food intake, diminished nutritional efficiency and immunologic effects. The present study was designed to further characterize the alterations in energy metabolism induced by DON intoxication. We demonstrated that acute DON intoxication triggered liver steatosis associated with an altered expression of genes related to lipids oxidation, lipogenesis and lipolysis. This steatosis was concomitant to anorexia, hypoglycemia an

T-2 toxin (T-2), one of the most important and toxic trichothecene mycotoxins, can cause many medical problems, such as diarrhea, nervous disorders, immunodepression and death, and is also believed as an etiological factor of Kashin-Beck disease, an endemic osteochondropathy prevailing in North China. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying T-2 effects on tissue damage remain elusive. We differentiated ATDC5 chondrogenic cells into hypertrophic chondrocytes, and found that T-2 reduced the expression of anabolic genes, and increased the expression of catabolic genes. To uncover the mechani

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is an important mycotoxin that contaminates cereal grains and poses serious threats to livestock and poultry production and human health. This review systematically summarizes the cytotoxicity of DON in the intestinal, immune, nervous, and reproductive systems. Particular emphasis is placed on the mechanism in which the direct ribotoxic stress response (direct RSR) acts as the initial trigger, followed by an imbalance in signaling networks and secondary amplification of ROS and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Through crosstalk among the MAPK, PI3K/AKT/mTOR, NF-κB, JAK2/

Mycotoxin contamination in wheat is a major food safety concern; however, quantitative evidence linking fungal community signals, mycotoxin exceedance risk, and wheat quality traits in naturally contaminated wheat remains limited. In this study, wheat samples were collected from mycotoxin-prone monitoring sites under unusually rainy conditions in 2022 to explore early-warning indicators and post-harvest mitigation strategies. According to the National Food Safety Standard of China GB 2761-2017, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), deoxynivalenol (DON), and zearalenone (ZEN) exceeded the maximum limits in 52.2

Objectives: Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a ubiquitous mycotoxin detected in the environment and foodstuffs. DON exposure can lead to chronic intestinal inflammation. Therefore, intervention strategy needs to be established to prevent the intestinal inflammation caused by DON. Methods: The structure of Mesona chinensis Benth polysaccharide-3 (MCP-3), a major component isolated and purified from crude MCP, was analyzed using spectroscopic and chromatographic methods. In vitro assays were conducted on the potential antioxidant bioactivities of MCP-3 and its ameliorative effects on deoxynivalenol-induc

T-2 toxin belongs to the trichothecenes group A compound, mainly produced by Fusarium fungi. It has been shown that T-2 toxin could cross the placental barrier and breast milk, thus endangering the health of offspring. The present study aimed to explore the effects of maternal T-2 toxin exposure on the integrity of the intestinal barrier and the intestinal microflora of young mice. From late pregnancy (GD 14) to lactation (LD 21), pregnant mice were given T-2 toxin daily at 0, 0.005, or 0.05 mg T-2 toxin/kg BW. Postnatal day 21 (PND21), PND28, and PND56 young mice were chosen as objects to det

Fungi and bacteria associated to phytoparasitic nematodes Globodera rostochiensis and Meloidogyne spp. in Algeria were identified and characterized. Trichoderma spp. showed the highest prevalence in the cysts of G. rostochiensis. A number of isolates were identified through PCR amplification and the sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS)1-2 and Rpb2 gene regions. The most represented species were T. harzianum and T. afroharzianum. The latter and T. hirsutum were reported for the first time in Algeria. Fusarium spp., including F. oxysporum and F. solani, comprised a second group of

Among foodborne toxicities, the T-2 toxin is the most toxic member of trichothecenes mycotoxins, which has been shown to impair the development and reproductive efficiency of animals. Pups are particularly more quickly prone to programming the effects of the maternal diet during the gestational and lactation periods. Few studies have reported the maternal toxic effect on the next generation. Dams were served the T-2 toxin at a dose of 0.005 and 0.05 mg/kg body weight/day and control group 0 mg/kg from gestation day 14 to lactation day 21. Female mice offspring were selected at the weaning age.

Chronic dietary exposure to low concentrations of deoxynivalenol (DON), a trichothecene mycotoxin found in cereal products, disrupts immune homeostasis and exacerbates allergic inflammation. Chlorella sorokiniana (CS) can adsorb DON and reduce its systemic absorption. However, whether this DON-binding activity protects against DON-induced immune dysregulation remains unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of CS on DON-induced toxicity and DON-exacerbated allergic dermatitis. In vitro, murine DC2.4 dendritic cells were exposed to DON in the presence or absence of CS-treated DON preparations

Environmental mycotoxins, secondary metabolites produced by fungi, contaminate food and feed, posing significant risks to animal and human health. Among them, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), T-2 toxin (T-2), and deoxynivalenol (DON) are three of the most prevalent and neurotoxic mycotoxins, widely detected in grains and feed products. While individual toxicities of AFB1, T-2, and DON have been extensively studied, the research on their combined exposure is limited. The potential synergistic, antagonistic, or additive neurotoxic effects of these toxins remain unclear, and their underlying mechanisms, espe

Deoxynivalenol (DON), a prevalent mycotoxin in contaminated feed, compromises ovarian function through dual disruption of redox homeostasis and metabolic networks. However, the precise mechanisms underlying DON-induced toxicity and effective strategies to mitigate its reproductive consequences remain incompletely understood. This study reveals the molecular mechanism by which DON induces ferroptosis in porcine granulosa cells through the glycolysis-H3K18la-STEAP3 axis and elucidates how melatonin alleviates DON toxicity via metabolic reprogramming. Multi-omics analyses demonstrate that DON exp

Deoxynivalenol ( DON) is one of the most harmful mycotoxins in food or feed or Traditional Chinese Medicine. An efficient and applicable method for the detoxification of DON is urgently developed. 1152 strains were isolated from the intestinal contents of crucian. Morganella morganii YC12-C3 and Enterococcus faecalis YC12-C10 were screened with the highest degradation rate of DON via HPLC methods. The optimal degradation condition of YC12-C3 and YC12-C10 is co-cultured 24 h and 36 h at 28 ℃ in LB medium with pH 7 and 1.0% inoculation dosage, respectively. LC-MS/MS and 1H NMR results show that
