We evaluated a 49-year-old man with severe tricuspid valve regurgitation and coronary artery disease who had undergone congenital ventricular septal defect repair four decades previously. We found an enlarged, prolapsed commissure between the anterior and septal leaflets and a ruptured septal leaflet chorda. Two mattress sutures closed the commissure, with the leaflets' height matched by inverting the prolapsed site ventricularly. After implanting the annuloplasty band, we undertook chordal replacement using expanded polytetrafluoroethylene sutures. Artificial chorda length was determined usin

BACKGROUND: Congenital tricuspid valve malformations are known to occur, but tricuspid valve malformations associated with twins are rarely reported. We report this case from the point of view of a medical history, an auxiliary examination and a genetic pathogenesis to provide a reference for our peers.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of congenital heart disease in monozygotic twins of Hui nationality in Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, they are normal conception. Twin 1 had Ebstein's anomaly, and received surgical treatment and recovered satisfactorily. Twin 2 had only partial tricuspid sept

In six patients with clinically unsuspected right atrial thromboemboli the diagnosis was made with two-dimensional echocardiography. Five patients had pulmonary emboli, and one had systemic embolization. Three patients had congestive cardiomyopathy, two with tricuspid regurgitation; of the remaining three, one had cor pulmonale complicated by tricuspid regurgitation, one had thrombophlebitis and one had no discernible cardiac illness. Four patients had dizziness or syncope, four had dyspnea, three had chest pain, three had hypotension and tow had cyanosis. Five patients were treated with throm

Atrial functional mitral regurgitation is a hot research topic in the field of mitral valve disease. Atrial functional mitral regurgitation is distinctly different from ventricular functional mitral regurgitation. The surgical indications for atrial functional mitral regurgitation have not been well established because of the small amount of evidence gathered to date. Mitral annular plication with an artificial ring is an essential surgical procedure because dilatation of the mitral valve annulus is a main factor underlying this pathology. Most of these cases can be treated by mitral annulopla

UNLABELLED: To analyze the myxomatous changes and the components of acidic glycosaminoglycans (GAG) of the mitral valve in aged patients with the mitral valve prolapse (MVP) syndrome, a pathological and histochemical study was performed on hearts of 18 autopsied cases with MVP. The histochemical study included toluidine blue Ohno's method, and 3 enzymatic digestion tests with streptomyces hyaluronidase, chondroitinase AC-II and chondroitinase ABC. The following results were obtained: 1. The incidence of MVP with mitral regurgitation among 2,060 elderly autopsy patients over 60 years of age was

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Mitral regurgitation (MR) is often caused by myxomatous mitral valve disease which affects many small-breed dogs, including Chihuahua dogs. The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of MR and tricuspid regurgitation (TR), valvular thickening, and prolapse in a group of apparently healthy Chihuahua dogs.
ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-seven privately owned Chihuahua dogs, recruited via the Swedish Chihuahua Club, were included in the study. A prospective observational study was conducted where clinical examinations, electrocardiograms, and echocardiogra

Epicardial cryosurgery for ablation of atrioventricular accessory pathways has surgical advantages. However, it is applied directly to the valve base. To assess the risk of valve impairment, 10 anaesthetized dogs were subjected to standardized epicardial cryosurgery of the right atrioventricular junction. Two of these underwent sham procedure (dissection only). Valve function was assessed by colour Doppler echocardiography preoperatively and at 2 days, 1 week, 2 weeks and 10 weeks postoperatively. Three out of the eight animals subjected to cryosurgery developed moderate (grade 2/4) tricuspid

Although no epidemiological studies are available to evaluate the exact risk of infective endocarditis complicating native cardiac disease, analysis of data in the literature shows that cardiac disease can be classified into three groups of decreasing risk: (1) high risk disease includes cyanotic congenital heart lesions, previous bacterial endocarditis, aortic valve disease, mitral regurgitation and uncorrected left-to-right shunt, but not atrial septal defect; (2) cardiac conditions of moderate risk include mitral valve prolapse with valvar regurgitation or leaflet thickening, isolated mitra

The patient was a 61-year-old man with neurofibromatosis typeⅠ, who had several papules in a whole body. Medical history included atrial fibrillation and cerebral embolism. Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiogram revealed severe mitral valve regurgitation and tricuspid valve regurgitation due to annular dilation with atrial enlargement, tethering of the posterior mitral leaflet, the anterior mitral leaflet prolapse with chordal rupture. Mitral valve repair and tricuspid annuloplasty, maze procedure were performed via median sternotomy. Mitral valve repair was performed by chorda recon

A review of 34 autopsied cases with classical Ebstein's malformation of the tricuspid valves revealed 8 cases with left-sided anomalies. Among these, appearing in 1 case each, were aortic atresia and persistent common atrioventricular canal. The latter 2 conditions were dominant clinically. In the remaining 6 cases the left-sided anomalies were not apparent clinically and probably of no functional significance. These conditions were parachute mitral valve, bicuspid aortic valve, cor triatriatum and pulmonary stenosis, cleft mitral valve, stenosis of individual pulmonary veins, and prolapse of

Nine adult patients with large pericardial effusions (PE) demonstrated echocardiographic motion abnormalites of cardiac valves in systole. In four cases (Group 1), the abnormal findings consisted of prominent systolic anterior movements of the mitral valve resembling those seen in idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis. In Group 2(five cases), typical mitral valve prolapse patterns with large posterior midsystolic displacements well below the C point were observed. Additional abnormalities in Group 2 included tricuspid valve prolapse patterns (four cases), early systolic movement of the ao

Valvulo-annuloplasty for atrioventricular (AV) valvular regurgitation was performed in 10 patients with univentricular heart and double outlet right ventricle. Kay annuloplasty alone was employed in three patients with a quadricuspid or tricuspid common AV valve. Two of them died after the operation and the remaining one is waiting for reoperation because of recurrence of severe AV valve regurgitation. The suturing-up of free margins of the anterior and posterior common leaflets was performed in 3 children with quadricuspid common AV valve and effectively reduced the regurgitation. The semicir

Anatomic and functional features of the normal and abnormal mitral valve are reviewed. Of 1,010 personally studied necropsy patients with severe (functional class III or IV, New York Heart Association) cardiac dysfunction from primary valvular heart disease, 434 (43%) had mitral stenosis (MS) with or without mitral regurgitation (MR): unassociated with aortic valve stenosis or regurgitation or with tricuspid valve stenosis in 189 (44%) patients, and associated with aortic stenosis in 152 (35%), with pure (no element of stenosis) aortic regurgitation in 65 (15%) patients, and with tricuspid val

Examinations of 70 patients with keeled deformation of the chest (KDC) have revealed signs of connective tissue dysplasia in all the examinees, as well as heart rhythm and conduction disorders. Echography has shown ventricular and atrial septal defects, mitral valve prolapse, dilatation of the aortic root, tricuspidal valve prolapse, abnormally located chorda. The development of KDC in the presence of external connective tissue stigmata, involvement of the cardiovascular system, changed dermatoglyphic pattern of the palms and fingers (as evidenced by dermatoglyphic analysis), as well as findin

The purpose of this study was to determine the most discriminating clinical and echocardiographic features that are most helpful in correctly identifying Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve from other causes of tricuspid regurgitation. Ebstein's anomaly is an uncommon malformation of the tricuspid valve with diagnostic echocardiographic features. Other cardiac disorders associated with tricuspid valve regurgitation and predominate right-sided heart chamber enlargement can be misdiagnosed as Ebstein's anomaly. All patients who were referred to our institution between 1982 and 1995 with the

In 7/340 patients (2.1%) examined by transesophageal echocardiography, aneurysms of the intraatrial septum were observed. In no patient were additional shunts present. In 3/7 patients mitral valve and in 2/7 patients tricuspidal valve prolapse was found. Intraatrial septum aneurysms seem to have a higher frequency than that indicated by transthoracical echocardiography. The incidence observed by transesophageal echocardiography corresponds to the incidence of pathological findings.

OBJECTIVE: Mitral regurgitation due to prolapse of the mitral leaflets frequently compromises annuloplasty repair procedures. We present a new annuloplasty ring that overcomes this difficulty, preventing displacement of the leaflets into the atrium.
METHODS: The 'Valve Racket' is a prosthetic ring transformed into a racket by means of handmade mesh using expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE Gore-Tex). After transection of the marginal chordae tendineae, five sheep had the new racket implanted in the mitral (n = 3) and in the tricuspid position (n = 2). The surviving sheep underwent postope

A 66-year-old male was brought to our hospital following a car accident. He had subarachnoid hemorrhage, multiple rib fractures, and left hemopneumothorax. He was referred to the Cardiology Department for elevated troponin levels (42 ng/ml, reference 0-1 ng/ml). The electrocardiogram was free of ischemia, whereas the transthoracic echocardiography revealed dilated right heart chambers, enlarged tricuspid annulus and coaptation failure of the tricuspid valvular leaflets. There was rupture on the subvalvular apparatus of the anterior leaflet of the tricuspid valve with accompanying prolapse, cau

A 75-year-old man with mitral regurgitation (MR) and tricuspid regurgitation (TR) caused by Barlow 's disease was referred to our hospital. He had a history of persistent atrial fibrillation. Echocardiography showed severe MR with bi-leaflet billowing and functional TR. Cardiac index was 1.08 l/min/m2 without pulmonary hypertension. Through superior trans-septal approach, mitral valve was repaired by annuloplasty only using a partial ring so as not to induce systolic anterior movement. On the other hand, tricuspid valves showed severe billowing and prolapse, both of which were unexpected. Foll
