Colonic tuberculosis masquerading as crohn's disease.

Intestinal tuberculosis (TB) is a diagnostic challenge and can closely mimic Crohn's disease (CD) and colon cancer. These disease entities very closely resemble each other in symptomatology, imaging, appearance, and pathology. We present a case of colonic TB where the initial diagnostic workup was suggestive of CD. However, the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in biopsy specimens confirmed the diagnosis.

When the Diagnosis is a Victim of the Circumstances.

INTRODUCTION: Haemoptysis is a common symptom which can sometimes mimic gastrointestinal bleeding. CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe the case of a 31-year-old man who presented to the emergency department after an episode of sudden nausea and presumed massive haematemesis. The situation was interpreted as gastrointestinal bleeding but clinical evolution and greater attention to the anamnesis resulted in a diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis and the provision of appropriate care. DISCUSSION: This report emphasizes the difficulty of differentiating between haemoptysis and haematemesis and the impo

Isolated gastric tuberculosis presenting as massive hematemesis: report of a case.

Tuberculous involvement of the stomach is rare. We report herein the unusual case of a 25-year-old man in whom a benign gastric ulcer was found along the lesser curvature after he presented with massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Histopathological examination helped to confirm a diagnosis of tuberculosis. The granulomas typical of tuberculosis were caseation with epithelioid and giant cells. The patient was successfully treated by a combination of appropriate surgical therapy and prompt institution of antituberculosis medication.

The potential mechanism of the progression from latent to active tuberculosis based on the intestinal microbiota alterations.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) poses a serious challenge to global health systems. The altered intestinal microbiota is associated with the pathogenesis of TB, but the exact links remain unclear. METHODS: 16 S rDNA sequencing was performed to comprehensively detect the changes in the intestinal microbiota of feces from active TB (ATB), latent TB infection (LTBI) and healthy controls (HC). RESULTS: The rarefaction curves demonstrated the sequencing results' validity. The alpha diversity was lowest in ATB, while highest in HC. Boxplot of beta diversity showed significant differences in every

[Acute perforated appendicitis secondary to tuberculosis as a cause of postpartum infection].

Gastrointestinal tuberculosis is a rare extrapulmonary manifestation, it represents 3% of cases and mainly involves the ileocecal region; appendiceal involvement is rare. Tuberculous appendicitis can present as an acute condition indistinguishable from other causes of appendicitis and the diagnosis is generally made by histopathological finding, which delays treatment and can lead to complications. The postpartum period is at risk of a reactivation of tuberculosis, due to changes in the immune system that manifests as an immune reconstitution syndrome. We present the case of a postpartum patie

Asymptomatic Tuberculosis-Induced Ileal Perforation in an HIV- Infected Individual; A Case Report.

The co-existence of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and tuberculosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality because of a widespread organ involvement. The gastrointestinal tract is a common site for localization of opportunistic microorganisms in AIDS. However, surgical abdominal emergencies such as intestinal perforation resulted from tuberculosis are uncommon in these patients. The asymptomatic occurrence of such intestinal perforation has not been reported our knowledge. We represent an HIV and HCV co-infected man with miliary tuberculosis and an incidentally detected free a

Cecal obstruction due to primary intestinal tuberculosis: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Primary intestinal tuberculosis is a rare variant of tuberculosis. The preferred treatment is usually pharmaceutical, but surgery may be required for complicated cases. CASE PRESENTATION: We report two cases of primary intestinal tuberculosis where the initial diagnosis was wrong, with colonic cancer suggested in the first case and a Crohn's disease complication in the second. Both of our patients were Caucasians of Greek nationality. In the first case (a 60-year-old man), a right hemicolectomy was performed. In the second case (a 26-year-old man), excision was impossible due to

Primary gastric tuberculosis presenting as gastric outlet obstruction: a case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis is a major health problem worldwide. Sudan has high burden of tuberculosis (TB) with a prevalence of 209 cases per 100,000 of the population and it is commonly presented with pulmonary disease but involvement of the gastrointestinal tract is not uncommon. Abdominal tuberculosis comprises about 1-3 % of all cases of tuberculosis and about 12% of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. It involves the ileocecal region, but involvement of stomach and duodenum are rare sites. Here we present an unusual case of gastric outlet obstruction due to gastric tuberculosis. CASE PRESENTATI

Isolated liver tuberculosis abscess in a patient without immunodeficiency: A case report.

Although hepatic tuberculosis is not a rare disease entity, tubercular liver abscess (TLA) is extremely rare. It is usually associated with foci of infection either in the lung and/or gastrointestinal tract or with an immunocompromised state. An isolated or primary TLA with no evidence of tuberculosis elsewhere is even rarer. We report on a 28 year old man who developed an isolated tuberculous liver abscess not associated with lung involvement. Ultrasonography and computed tomography of the abdomen showed the abscess lesions in the liver but the diagnosis of tuberculosis was confirmed by histo

Left-Sided Destroyed Lung With Severe Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension as a Consequence of Recurrent Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

Pulmonary tuberculosis is an infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which is an obligate aerobic microbe. Tuberculosis is a multisystemic disease that can attack the respiratory system, genitourinary system, central nervous system, gastrointestinal system, and the skeletal framework of the body. However, the most commonly affected system is the respiratory system (pulmonary tuberculosis). Tuberculosis is an ancient infection that affects millions of people every year, and even after adequate treatment, it is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, which can be attributed

An Interesting Case of Dysphagia in a HIV Patient.

Oesophageal tuberculosis is a rare disease. Tuberculosis (TB) can cause dysphagia due to oesophageal ulcers, Tracheo-Oesophageal Fistulas (TOFs) and an extrinsic compression which is caused by the mediastinal lymph nodes. A 33-year-old gentleman was admitted to our hospital for the evaluation of fever, dysphagia and cough. His chest X-ray was suggestive of miliary tuberculosis. A CT scan of his chest revealed miliary tuberculosis, mediastinal lymphadenopathy and pneumomediastinum. His sputum AFB (acid-fast bacilli) test was positive. An upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a large ulcer i

[Multiple intestinal perforations due to tuberculosis: a case report and review of the literature].

The incidence of tuberculosis in Italy steadily decreased until two decades ago, but the infection is now frequently diagnosed in common clinical practice. The Authors describe a rare acute abdominal presentation of the disease featuring a double intestinal perforation in a subject affected by pulmonary, renal and gastrointestinal miliary tuberculosis. A review of the literature is also presented. Intestinal resection is the treatment of choice in such cases, even if it leads to frequent, major complications, but the authors stress that there may be a possibility for a less radical form of man
