BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization's Action Framework for tuberculosis elimination in low-tuberculosis incidence countries includes the screening for active and latent tuberculosis in selected high-risk groups, including health care workers. In this context, medical and health profession students, exposed to nosocomial tuberculosis transmission during training and clinical rotations, are target populations for tuberculosis screening. No updated data are available on tuberculosis screening practice and knowledge of medical and health profession students in Italy.

There has been change in the guidelines for the management of tuberculosis in India. The new guidelines advocate the daily use of Ethambutol for both intensive and continuation phase of the treatment. This may be a matter of concern as increased cumulative dose may lead to increase in incidence of toxic optic neuropathy due to ethambutol. Indian Neuro-Ophthalmology Society has taken cognizance of the issue and has come-up with guidelines for prevention and early detection of the toxic optic neuropathy.

In the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic year 2020, the 30th European Respiratory Society (ERS) International Congress took place for the first time in a fully virtual format. Despite the challenging nature of the task to create and deliver an online event of this size and scope, it turned out to be a great success, welcoming over 33 000 delegates to the specially designed online platform and offering more than 450 scientific and educational sessions. Somewhat predictably, this year's ERS International Congress dedicated a full day to the topic of COVID-19, highlighting that infecti

The Paediatric Expert Group on the Immunization Programme was established in January 2007. It is an independent advisory body to the Minister of Health. The Expert Group consists of paediatricians from various sub-specialities. Most of them are members of the Polish Society of Vaccinology (Table I). The Group started their activities informally in 2005. The first project concerned changes in immunization against tuberculosis and prophylaxis of measles, mumps and rubella. The project was fully implemented in 2006. The changes initiated three years ago, gradually implemented in the Immunization

Drugs used in the treatment of tuberculosis (Tb) in Japan are investigated. Especially the chemotherapy for Tb and its influences on epidemiological aspects are discussed. 1. Various drugs were used for Tb patients before the World War II, but none was effective in curing this infectious disease. Creosote and guajacol groups were used frequently to relieve symptoms of pulmonary tuberculosis, but the disease could not cure itself. Because of the sacrifice of young patients, the mortality rate of Tb from 1935 to 1950 was ranked as the worst in Japan. So until the advent of chemotherapeutic drugs

A clinical study of 52 patients diagnosed as having pulmonary tuberculosis at National Chiba-Higashi Hospital between 1988 and 1990 was performed. The cases ranged in age from 80-89 years; mean male patient age was 82.5, and mean female patient age was 84.3. Diagnosis of the cases were as follows: 19 discovered when checking into hospital because of chest symptoms; 14 diagnosed during the treatment of other diseases; 14 diagnosed during admission to the hospital for other diseases; and five cases were detected by chest X-rays. A total of 38 cases, had received primary treatment for pulmonary t

In the chronicles of human history, infectious diseases played a pivotal role, influencing societies, steering advancements in medicine, and significantly impacting the well-being of people worldwide. Consequently, in the pursuit of identifying effective combating agents for infectious ailments, the Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) complexes of N'-(4-nitrobenzylidene)benzohydrazide were synthesized in the current investigation. Numerous spectral and physical analysis were conducted to characterize the compounds which revealed octahedral stereochemistry of complexes. The anti-tuberculosis, anti-i

OBJECTIVES: Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease with a global distribution. The mainstay of treatment is a combination of antituberculous (AT) drugs. The standard combination uses four first-line AT drugs; however, in certain groups of patients, the combination must be modified or reduced in dosage. This is especially true of patients with comorbidities, in the elderly and in pregnant women. The aim of this review is to provide up-to-date information regarding AT treatment in a variety of special patient populations.
DATA SOURCE: The recommendations presented here are based on the clin

In 1998, Prevention Committee of the Japanese Society for Tuberculosis announced guidelines for dealing with nosocomial tuberculosis infections. These guidelines recommended the two-step tuberculin tests (TST) as baseline data for each medical employee when they started to work. If accurate records of previous TSTs are available in addition to baseline data, they are useful to evaluate the presence of tuberculosis infection when they started to work. We therefore studied the frequency profile of size of TST among medical employees in INBA-HITEC Medical Center and discussed methods to improve i

Mycobacterium xenopi is very rare pathogen in Japan. We reported herein four cases of M. xenopi pulmonary disease. These patients were all male and their ages ranged from 53 to 72. They all had past history of pulmonary tuberculosis, including two cases who had been also treated for Mycobacterium kansasii pulmonary disease later. The bacilli could be cultured in Mycobacteria Growth Indicator Tube (MGIT) system from 10 sputum samples, but they could not be cultured on Ogawa egg media except for two samples. All four cases fulfilled the criteria for the diagnosis of nontuberculous mycobacteria p

BACKGROUND: Bronchiectasis is often considered an orphan disease in developed societies. This may not be the case with low-income countries. Currently there is a paucity of data on the pattern and presentation of this condition in Nigeria.
OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to determine the frequency and pattern of presentation of bronchiectasis in a tertiary healthcare facility in Uyo, South-South, Nigeria.
METHODS: We carried out a three-year prospective study of adult patients aged between 15-85 years diagnosed with bronchiectasis in the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital in Uyo, Niger

The intricate causal relationships between disease in man and disease in animals first began to be elucidated in the mid-19th century. Although the connections between animal and human disease are now generally understood, individuals as well as societies remain slow to act on this knowledge. This paper examines the gradual recognition of these disease connections and explores the parallel theme of man's reluctance to appreciate the implications of these connections. It identifies factors that have inhibited the realization of the links between disease in man and animals, and discusses several

BACKGROUND: Screening and treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) prior to anti-tumour necrosis factor alpha (anti-TNF-alpha) therapy has been shown to decrease the incidence of active tuberculosis (TB) by more than 80%, and is recommended by the British Thoracic Society. In the absence of a gold standard test for LTBI, conventional screening currently involves taking a clinical history of risk factors, a chest X-ray and a tuberculin skin test (TST) which can be difficult to interpret in immunosuppressed patients. Alternative cellular immune-based screening tests have been developed

One of the primary aims in tuberculosis (TB) management is to detect new cases as early as possible, and instigate the most appropriate therapy, for which it is important to know the characteristics of TB drug resistance in society. The aim of our study was to determine the resistance status of tuberculosis in the Samsun region of Turkey. To achieve that, the medical records of 1,029 pulmonary tuberculosis patients admitted to Samsun Chest Diseases and Chest Surgery Hospital between 2004 and 2006 were analyzed for drug resistance characteristics. In order to define the problem, isolates were t

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a disease of global concern caused by the pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In the face of emerging infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, dengue fever, Lassa fever, and Ebola, attention to the control of TB is losing its place as a priority in public and global health initiatives. Recently, after a hiatus enforced by the COVID-19 pandemic, scientists, public health experts, and other stakeholders met in Durban, South Africa (SA) for the 7th South Africa Tuberculosis Conference to share, discuss, and recommend strategies to regain TB control. In this paper, we summ

Infectious diseases have a significant impact in the historical trajectory of humanity, exerting profound influence on societies, driving advancements in medical science, and significantly impacting individuals on a worldwide scale. Consequently, this research endeavours to identify potent agents combatting tuberculosis, inflammation, and microbial deformities. The investigation focuses on hydrazones (1,2) endowed eight organotin(IV) complexes, where hydrazones were derived from 2-acetyl-1H-indene-1,3(2H)-dione and 2-phenoxypropanehydrazide/2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)propanehydrazide. Second-line drugs (SLDs) are essential for treating multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB* and XDR TB†). Drug shortages, in which supplies of all clinically interchangeable versions of a given Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-regulated drug become inadequate to meet actual or projected user demand, have been well-documented in many areas of medicine; for several years, drug shortages in the United States have affected the availability of SLDs for treatment of TB. In November 2010, a nationwide survey of TB control programs conducted by the National Tuberculo

This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted to identify the factors that promote the risk of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) lung infection in subjects with prior occupational dust exposure. All consecutive patients with a history of occupational dust exposure whose expectorated sputum, bronchial wash, or bronchial lavage was subjected to acid-fast Bacilli culture in a tertiary hospital between 2011 and 2016 were identified. The patients who were infected with NTM were identified according to the bacteriological criteria of the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and The Infectious Di
