Pathology of cloacal bursae of gnotobiotic turkeys orally inoculated with Escherichia coli.

Cloacal bursae from three-week-old gnotobiotic turkeys were examined by light and electron microscopy and bacteriologic techniques at 1, 2, 5, 8, 12, and 16 days after oral inoculation of highly virulent (group 1) and weakly virulent (group 2) Escherichia coli. In both groups a significant decrease in follicular volume and increase in interstitial volume were associated with infection. Follicular cortical, follicular medullary and total follicular transectional areas increased with time in inoculated and control turkeys. In group 1, granulocytic inflammation developed in bursae on day 1 and di

Serological types of Pasteurella multocida isolated from turkeys and chickens in Canada.

Outbreaks of fowl cholera continue to plague the Canadian poultry industry despite widespread immunization against the causative agent, Pasteurella multocida. Fowl cholera bacterins currently employed by domestic poultry growers contain three serological types, namely, serotypes 1, 3, and 4. In this study a total of 84 strains of P. multocida were isolated in Canada from outbreaks of fowl cholera in turkeys and chickens. Serotyping was accomplished using the gel diffusion precipitin test. Based on the gel diffusion precipitation patterns, 27 serotypes containing one to six antigenic determinan

Lameness and leg weakness in rapidly growing turkeys associated with hip lesions.

A form of epidemic lameness affecting rapidly growing broadbreasted turkeys of different breeds was investigated in 16 flocks. The condition commenced when birds were between eight and 14 weeks old and was consistenly associated with the development of lesions in the hip. Affected birds first showed leg weakness and ataxia and later chronic postural changes involving the hip. The post mortem lesions were those of inflammation, oedema, ulceration, fibrosis and complensatory hypertrophy of localised areas associated with the hip articulation. The cause was not established but the anatomical feat

Natural resolution of air sac lesions caused by mycoplasma meleagridis in turkeys.

Lesions caused by Mycoplasma meleagridis were followed in one hatch of turkeys from one day to 20(1/2) weeks of age. Air sac lesion incidence increased from 20% at one day to 44% at six weeks of age with a slow decline to 10% at 10 weeks of age. Lesions were detectable on careful examination at 10-20% level to 20 weeks of age on laboratory examination, but at 20(1/2) weeks only 0.07% lesions were found in 1000 turkeys from the same hatch. Air sac lesion severity, based on an arbitrary 0.5,1,2,3,+scale, increased in intensity and spread of air sac involvement from a mean of 1.5 at day old to 2.

Liver pathology associated with increased mortality in turkey breeder and meat turkey flocks.

Between 2006 and 2011 a series of disease conditions characterized by raised mortality and liver disorders occurred in turkey breeder flocks and in meat turkey flocks in Germany. The flocks were between 12 and 23 wk of age, and mostly hens were affected. Clinical signs were nonspecific and accompanied by mortality varying between 1% and 7%. Affected birds displayed swollen livers that were marbled with black and red spots and yellowish areas. The pericardium was filled with an amber fluid, and the coronary groove was extensively filled with fat. Spleens were swollen, and a serous fluid that se

Pathology and tissue distribution of turkey coronavirus in experimentally infected chicks and turkey poults.

Twenty 1-day-old specific pathogen free chicks and 20 1-day-old commercially derived turkey poults were inoculated with a Brazilian strain of turkey coronavirus (TCoV) to study the pathogenicity and virus distribution up to 14 days post-inoculation by histopathology, immunohistochemistry, reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and sequencing. At 2-14 dpi, TCoV antigens were detected in the paranasal sinus and lachrymal accessory gland (Harderian gland) of infected chicks and in the ileum, ileocaecal junction and caecum of infected poults. Lymphocytic inflammation was present in these

Wildlife rabies in Western Turkey: the spread of rabies through the western provinces of Turkey.

The incidence of rabies has decreased in Turkey during recent years. However, an increasing number of rabies cases have been reported in the Aegean (western) region of Turkey. The virus appears to have maintained a foothold in the urban areas of the province of Izmir with only three cases per year being reported during the mid-1990s. Since 2001, the virus has been recorded in the previously rabies-free provinces of Manisa and Aydin. During this epizootic, cases have been reported in both dogs and foxes, and there has been an unusually high incidence of rabies in domestic livestock, especially

Molecular and Seroprevalence of Mycoplasma gallisepticum in Turkeys in Sylhet District of Bangladesh.

Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) poses a significant threat to Bangladesh's poultry industry, causing substantial economic losses every year. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of MG infection in turkeys using serum plate agglutination (SPA), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in Sylhet, Bangladesh from December 2019 to November 2020. In addition, we evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of these tests and identified potential risk factors associated with MG infection. A total of 250 blood samples and 250 tracheal swabs were collected from suspecte

Long-term protection of turkeys with a live clonal monoxenic Histomonas meleagridis vaccine.

Histomonosis, caused by the protozoan parasite Histomonas meleagridis, is a major concern in turkey production due to the lack of licenced drugs and vaccines. Despite various studies on experimental vaccination, the duration of immunity of such a vaccine remains unclear. This study evaluated the long-term efficacy of an attenuated clonal monoxenic H. meleagridis culture in turkeys, focusing on its protective effects. Day-old turkeys were vaccinated orally using a frozen vaccine culture directly, without additional multiplication, and challenged 12 weeks later. The vaccine caused no adverse cli

Research Note: Evaluation of quinine as a chemoprophylactic candidate against histomoniasis in turkeys.

Histomoniasis, also commonly referred to as blackhead disease, is caused by the protozoan parasite Histomonas meleagridis. Since the removal of nitarsone in 2015, no approved prophylactics are available for mitigating histomoniasis. Disease incidence and high mortalities are frequently associated with turkey flocks, although infection of broiler breeders also occurs. Quinine is a naturally occurring alkaloid with antimalarial properties. In vitro assays have shown strong antihistomonal properties of quinine, leading to our hypothesis that quinine inclusion within the feed could prevent histomo

A morphological study of skeletal development in turkeys during the pre-hatching stage.

Skeletal chondrofication, ossification and growth of turkey embryos were investigated and analysed to enable assessment of the developmental status and evaluation of the experimental effects on skeletal development, skeletal mutations and development of cultured embryos. Ten embryos were prepared every 24 h from 8 to 28 days of incubation. The fixed embryos were cleared and stained in toto with Alcian blue & Alizarin red for cartilage and ossified components, respectively. Observation of the skeleton was performed under a stereoscopic microscopy, with special attention to the timing of chondro

Localization of astrovirus in experimentally infected turkeys as determined by in situ hybridization.

Twenty-one 3-day-old turkey poults from British United Turkeys of America were orally inoculated with a recently characterized astrovirus, TAstV-2, isolated from turkeys with poult enteritis and mortality syndrome. At 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 9 days postinfection (dpi), three inoculated birds were euthanatized, and tissues (intestines, spleen, bursa, and thymus) were collected immediately into 10% neutral buffered formalin. Inoculated birds were diarrheic by 3 dpi, and frothy feces persisted throughout the experimental period. Histologically, there was only slight evidence of enteric damage, whic

The effect of hypovitaminosis A on the pathogenesis of Pasteurella multocida in turkeys.

It has been proposed that Pasteurella multocida can invade the host tissues via the mucous membrane. Vitamin A (VitA) deficiency has been associated with mucous membrane damage, such as squamous metaplasia. The objective of this study was to determine the early stages in the pathogenesis of P. multocida in VitA-deficient turkeys and clinically healthy turkeys. Fifteen-week-old VitA-deficient and clinically healthy turkeys were inoculated with P. multocida P-1059, a virulent strain, and the portal of entry, invasion, and localization of P. multocida were studied by microbial examination of the

Wry necks associated with Mycoplasma meleagridis infection in a backyard flock of turkeys.

Two 5-week-old bronze turkeys were submitted with crooked necks that could not be straightened. Both birds were serologically and culturally positive for Mycoplasma meleagridis (MM). Histologically, there were lymphoid follicles in the cranial thoracic and cervicoclavicular air sacs, and inflammatory changes in the cartilage of some cervical vertebrae. This appeared to be a case of MM-associated wry necks.

Influence of light sources on the growth and reproduction of large white turkeys.

The present study evaluated the effects of sodium vapor (SV), daylight fluorescent (FL) and incandescent (IN) light sources on the growth and reproduction of primary turkeys. Large White turkeys (90 sire line and 324 dam line) were reared by sex under one of the three light sources from 8 to 22 wk of age. At 22 wk of age, all males and females were preconditioned under their assigned light source, but the photophase was restricted to 6 h per day at an intensity of 21.6 lx. At 33 wk of age, the males were exposed to 16 h of light per day under the same light sources in which they were reared. A

Pathogenesis of rotavirus infection in various age groups of chickens and turkeys: pathology.

Various age groups of turkeys, White Leghorn chickens, and broiler chickens were inoculated with turkey rotavirus strain Tu-2 or with chicken rotavirus Ch-2, and the development of rotavirus-induced lesions were evaluated macroscopically and microscopically (light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy). Morphometric evaluations were conducted to determine morphologic changes in the villi of infected turkeys. Macroscopic lesions that were found in turkeys, but not in chickens, consisted of pallor of the intestinal tract and distension of the cecum with frothy or nonfrothy fluid contents.
