[Clinical study on perforation of the tympanic membrane and discussion based on experimentally induced tympanic rupture].

UNLABELLED: Traumatic perforation of the tympanic membrane (TM) was clinically studied by analyzing photographs of 231 ears treated in the Department of Otolaryngology of Tokyo Women's Medical College from May 1983 to December 1991. The dynamic features of TM and the mechanism of perforation are discussed. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: 1) Direct and indirect injuries of the TM through the external auditory canals were observed in 101 and 130 ears, respectively. One hundred and twenty-seven injured ears were seen in males and 104 in females. Subjects ages ranged from 1 to 64 years. One hundred and t

Searching for a Better Animal Model for Chronic Tympanic Membrane Perforation.

Chronic tympanic membrane perforation represents a prevalent otological condition, necessitating a reliable animal model for the validation and safety assessment of surgical techniques and materials employed in myringoplasty. This prospective study involved the establishment of chronic tympanic membrane perforation animal models in 16 chinchillas. A thermic myringotomy was conducted on the right ear (study group), followed by cold instrument myringotomy, coupled with the topical application of mitomycin C and dexamethasone solution on the left ear (control group). Results revealed that tympani

Correlation of Blast-Induced Tympanic Membrane Perforation with Peripheral Cochlear Synaptopathy.

The auditory organs, including the tympanic membrane, cochlea, and central auditory pathway, are the most fragile components of the human body when exposed to blast overpressure. Tympanic membrane perforation (TMP) is the most frequent symptom in blast-exposed patients. The impact of TMP on the inner ear and central auditory system, however, is not fully understood. We aimed to analyze the effect of blast-induced TMP on the auditory pathophysiological changes in mice after blast exposure. Mice aged seven weeks were exposed to blast overpressure to induce TMP and allowed to survive for two mont

Necessities, opportunities, and challenges for tympanic membrane perforation scaffolding-based bioengineering.

Tympanic membrane (TM) perforation is a global clinical dilemma. It occurs as a consequence of object penetration, blast trauma, barotrauma, and middle ear diseases. TM perforation may lead to otitis media, retraction pockets, cholesteatoma, and conductive deafness. Molecular therapies may not be suitable to treat perforation because there is no underlying tissue matrix to support epithelium bridging. Chronic perforations are usually reconstructed with autologous grafts via surgical myringoplasty. Surgical treatment is uncomfortable for the patients. The grafting materials are not perfect beca

Outcomes After Tympanic Membrane Perforation During Primary Stapes Surgery for Otosclerosis.

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Stapes surgery is occasionally complicated by an intraoperative tympanic membrane perforation (ITMP), traditionally indicating abortion of the procedure due to concerns for postoperative infection and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). This work examines outcomes and complications in completed primary stapes surgeries with and without ITMP. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review. METHODS: All patients diagnosed with otosclerosis between February 2008 and September 2017 at a tertiary otology referral center were reviewed retrospectively. Primary outcome measures were post-op

Effects of tympanic membrane perforation on middle ear transmission in gerbil.

Perforations of the tympanic membrane (TM) alter its structural and mechanical properties, thus resulting in a deterioration of sound transmission through the middle ear (ME), which presents itself clinically as a conductive hearing loss (CHL). The resulting CHL is proposed to be due to the loss of the pressure difference across the TM between the outer ear canal space and the ME cavity, a hypothesis which has been tested with both theoretical and experimental approaches. In the past, direct experimental observations had been either from the ME input (umbo) or the output of the stapes, and wer

Tympanic membrane perforation in adults. How to manage, when to refer.

Tympanic membrane perforation is a common and potentially serious condition. One of the most important aspects of primary care for perforations is deciding which patients need to be seen by an otolaryngologist and how urgently they need to be referred. There are several indications for surgical repair, but most cases can be managed with conservative care and require no referral.
