The relationship between personality dimensions and addiction type in women addicted to alcohol and opioids.

Personality traits significantly influence the development, persistence, and treatment outcomes of substance use disorders. Despite increasing addiction rates among women, sex-specific research remains limited. This study explores the relationship between addiction type and personality traits among inpatient women addicted to alcohol and opioids. A cross-sectional design included three groups: 80 women with alcohol addiction, 80 with opioid addiction, and 80 healthy controls. Participants completed the Revised Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI-5-R) and the Revised NEO Personality Invent

The impact of types of childhood maltreatment on the severity of PTSD and comorbid personality disorder symptoms.

Background: Childhood maltreatment is associated with various psychiatric disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and personality disorders (PDs). Previous research has suggested that PTSD and PD are highly comorbid. However, the impact of different types of childhood maltreatment on the severity of PTSD and PD symptoms in a clinical population with PTSD/PD symptoms remains unclear. Objective: We aimed to clarify the role of (a) the overall severity and (b) the severity of subtypes of childhood maltreatment on the severity of (a) PTSD and (b) comorbid PD symptoms. Methods: Dat

Inhibition of Th1-type immune responses in persons with HIV with current statin exposure.

BACKGROUND: Recent findings from the REPRIEVE study suggest statins provide greater cardiovascular protection in persons with HIV (PWH) than expected from low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol reduction alone. Statins may modulate Th1-type immune responses, including interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), neopterin, and kynurenine metabolism. We investigated if statin use in PWH was associated with suppression of Th1-type immune responses. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included PWH from the Copenhagen Comorbidity in HIV infection (COCOMO) study. Demographic and clinical variables were collected

Acetazolamide Therapy and Kidney Function in Persons with Nonalbuminuric Diabetes Mellitus Type 1.

KEY POINTS: Low-dose acetazolamide reversibly lowered GFR in persons with type 1 diabetes mellitus, suggesting a possible role in relieving glomerular hyperfiltration. Low doses of acetazolamide were well tolerated in persons with type 1 diabetes. BACKGROUND: Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) lower the risk of kidney failure in persons with type 2 diabetes. The presumed mechanism of action is through greater delivery of sodium to the distal tubule and activation of tubuloglomerular feedback, which lowers GFR and intraglomerular pressure. SGLT2is are not approved for use in p

Distinguishing four types of Person × Situation interactions: An integrative framework and empirical examination.

People differ in their reaction to situations, resulting in Person × Situation interactions. These interactions have been emphasized by many theoretical accounts of personality. Nevertheless, empirical progress on Person × Situation interactions has been slow. This is in part attributable to an insufficient distinction of person and situation variables and of different types of interaction effects. We propose a framework distinguishing four nested types of interaction effects varying in specificity: (a) P × S: broad Person × Situation interaction variance, (b) P × Sspec: between-person differe

Cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetes mellitus: progress toward personalized management.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the main cause of death among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), particularly in low- and middle-income countries. To effectively prevent the development of CVDs in T2DM, considerable effort has been made to explore novel preventive approaches, individualized glycemic control and cardiovascular risk management (strict blood pressure and lipid control), together with recently developed glucose-lowering agents and lipid-lowering drugs. This review mainly addresses the important issues affecting the choice of antidiabetic agents and lipid, blood pres

Embarrassing Product, Image Type, and Personal Pronoun: The Mediating Effect of Body Imagery.

Consumers often feel embarrassed when buying products like condoms, hemorrhoid cream, and beriberi cream in crowded pharmacies. There is an interesting phenomenon in life: Some beriberi creams use the images of a "real foot", while others use the images of a "cartoon foot." Imagine if a young woman needed to go to a retail store for beriberi cream that would embarrass her, she would choose a "real foot image" or a "cartoon foot image" beriberi cream? It has been shown that the embarrassment of these products has a strong negative impact on consumer buying behavior. Previous researches have exp

Lesions in different prefrontal sectors are associated with different types of acquired personality disturbances.

"Frontal lobe syndrome" is a term often used to describe a diverse array of personality disturbances following frontal lobe damage. This study's guiding premise was that greater neuroanatomical specificity could be achieved by evaluating specific types of personality disturbances following acquired frontal lobe lesions. We hypothesized that three acquired personality disturbances would be associated with lesion involvement of distinct sectors of the prefrontal cortex (PFC): 1) emotional-social disturbance and ventromedial PFC, 2) hypoemotional disturbance and dorsomedial PFC, and 3) dysexecuti

A comparison of the energy costs with use of different types of manual wheelchair in disabled persons.

The energy cost of physical activity is a well-documented field of research both in non-disabled subjects and in subjects with physical disabilities, in particular spinal cord lesions. The aim of this study was, therefore, to investigate the energy cost and subjective fatigue in disabled persons who make daily use of a manual wheelchair by comparing three different types of wheelchair (standard, lightweight and ultra-light) in order to obtain indices useful for prescribing the most effective and appropriate wheelchairaid for the individual patient. The study was carried out on 18 patients affe

A person-centered education for adolescents with type 1 diabetes-A randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Young people with type 1 diabetes and their parents need to receive person-centered education to be able to manage their diabetes. Guided Self-Determination-Young (GSD-Y) is a person-centered communication and reflection education model that can be used in educational program for young people with type 1 diabetes. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether GSD-Y leads to improved glycaemic control, increased self-perceived health and health-related quality of life, fewer diabetes-related family conflicts, and improved self-efficacy in a group-based intervention for adolescents starting cont

Homozygous p.Ser267Phe in SLC10A1 is associated with a new type of hypercholanemia and implications for personalized medicine.

SLC10A1 codes for the sodium-taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide (NTCP), which is a hepatocellular transporter for bile acids (BAs) and the receptor for hepatitis B and D viruses. NTCP is also a target of multiple drugs. We aimed to evaluate the medical consequences of the loss of function mutation p.Ser267Phe in SLC10A1. We identified eight individuals with homozygous p.Ser267Phe mutation in SLC10A1 and followed up for 8-90 months. We compared their total serum BAs and 6 species of BAs with 170 wild-type and 107 heterozygous healthy individuals. We performed in-depth medical examinations

Likelihood ratio-based integrated personal risk assessment of type 2 diabetes.

To facilitate personalized health care for multifactorial diseases, risks of genetic and clinical/environmental factors should be assessed together for each individual in an integrated fashion. This approach is possible with the likelihood ratio (LR)-based risk assessment system, as this system can incorporate manifold tests. We examined the usefulness of this system for assessing type 2 diabetes (T2D). Our system employed 29 genetic susceptibility variants, body mass index (BMI), and hypertension as risk factors whose LRs can be estimated from openly available T2D association data for the Jap

Informing cancer patient based on his type of personality: the suspicious (paranoid) patient.

Imparting bad news had always been an unpleasant task for the physician, as shown from ancient years to our days. In the healthcare sector and as far as the cancer patient is concerned, the imparting of bad news is performed by the patient's doctor within a therapeutic relationship of course. The fundamental question is how a therapist could tailor the information to any patient and if "Is it possible to determine who should be told what, when and how ?". The aim of this paper was to describe the suspicious character or type of personality thoroughly so that any physician can make a diagnosis

Type D personality, temperament, and mental health in military personnel awaiting deployment.

BACKGROUND: The Type D (distressed) personality refers to a general propensity to psychological distress defined by the combination of negative affectivity and social inhibition. Type D personality predicts poor mental and physical health in cardiac patients, but it has been argued that its assessment is affected by the state of illness. Therefore, validation of the Type D construct in healthy adults remains essential. PURPOSE: The objectives of this study were (1) to validate Type D personality against temperament and character dimensions in young, healthy adults and (2) to investigate the a
