Unexpected association between joint hypermobility syndrome/Ehlers-Danlos syndrome hypermobility type and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.

Joint hypermobility syndrome/Ehlers-Danlos syndrome hypermobility type (JHS/EDS-HT) is a largely unrecognized, heritable connective tissue disorder, mainly characterized by joint instability complications, widespread musculoskeletal pain, and minor skin features. In a case-control study, 47 consecutive JHS/EDS-HT patients were investigated for the prevalence of psychiatric disorders and compared to 45 healthy controls in a single center. The psychiatric evaluation consisted of structured clinical interview for DSM-IV criteria by using the SCID-I and the SCID-II. Symptom severity was assessed u

Personality factors and profiles in variants of irritable bowel syndrome.

AIM: To study the association between irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) variants (constipation, diarrhea, or both) and personality traits in non-psychiatric patients. METHODS: IBS was diagnosed using the Rome II diagnostic criteria after exclusion of organic bowel pathology. The entry of each patient was confirmed following a psychiatric interview. Personality traits and the score of each factor were evaluated using the NEO Five Factor Inventory. RESULTS: One hundred and fifty patients were studied. The mean age (+/- SD) was 33.4 (+/- 11.0) year (62% female). Subjects scored higher in neurotici

Introduction to the special issue on personality assessment in medical settings.

This special issue of the Journal of Personality Assessment brings together 3 review articles and 5 research studies on personality assessment in medical settings that should help clinicians become more familiar with the current status of this field. In 1 review article, Sirri, Fabbri, Fava, and Sonino (2007/this issue) summarize evidence of a new approach to the assessment of psychological syndromes in somatizing patients based on the Diagnostic Criteria for Psychosomatic Research (Fava et al., 1995). The other reviews focus on 2 personality constructs widely used in investigations with medic

Fibromyalgia: heterogeneity in personality and psychopathology and its implications.

The fibromyalgia syndrome (FM) is a chronic widespread pain condition whose etiology remains unknown and no treatment has satisfactory levels of success. A meta-analysis has identified a distinct Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) clinical profile between FM female patients and healthy controls, and differences between FM and other chronic pain condition with clear etiology have also been found. However, heterogeneity in this population has been suggested in several studies. We aim to assess clinical aspects in FM patients, based on personality psychopathology characteristi

Is bipolar I disorder heterogeneous?

OBJECTIVES: The question whether bipolar I disorder should be subdivided into a preponderantly manic group (M) with no depression or only mild depression (Md) and a nuclear manic-depressive group (MD) has been rarely studied although the problem was raised more than 50 years ago. This paper seeks to elucidate this question by contributing further data. METHODS: 406 patients with mood disorders hospitalised at some time during the period 1959-1963 were followed-up every five years until 1985; mortality data were collected up to 1997. Data on episodes, outcome, suicides and attempted suicides,

Medication-overuse headache and personality: a controlled study by means of the MMPI-2.

OBJECTIVE: The main aim of this study involves comparing the personality profiles of patients with medication-overuse headache (MOH) and episodic headaches, in order to elucidate the role of personality characteristics, according to one of the most widely used and validated personality assessment tool: Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2). BACKGROUND: Many studies have assessed the personality of headache patients by means of MMPI-2 only using clinical and content scales. In this study the supplementary scales were also used as they evaluate different aspects of personality, p

Multi-morbidity burden, psychological distress, and quality of life in implantable cardioverter defibrillator recipients: Results from a nationwide study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of multi-morbidity in implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) recipients is approximately 25%. Multi-morbidity is associated with poor health and psychological outcomes in this population and may affect ICD recipients' quality-of-life (QOL). The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of psychological distress (anxiety, depressive symptoms, and Type-D personality) in ICD recipients with varying levels of comorbidities, and to examine the association between multi-morbidity burden and QOL in this population. METHODS: All adults listed in the Swedis

An analysis of the relationship of selected personality traits on perceived stress in patients undergoing ablation for atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the correlation between selected personality traits and the level of perceived stress in patients undergoing catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. These arrhythmias are among the most common cardiac rhythm disorders. Previous research suggests that psychological factors such as stress and personality traits may correlate their development and clinical course. Understanding these relationships may improve the effectiveness of patient care, particularly in terms of psychological support during the perioperat

Psychological Profile of Patients with Psoriasis.

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease with a global prevalence of approximately 2% and significant psychiatric comorbidity. There is a great deal of existing literature assessing different aspects of psychology in psoriasis. We aimed to conduct an in-depth review of current evidence linking psoriasis to personality traits and psychiatric comorbidities, as well as factors that put these patients at risk of psychopathology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search of the PubMed database identified 1632 articles. We included articles studying psychological comorbidity in patients with

Psychosocial distress and health status as risk factors for ten-year major adverse cardiac events and mortality in patients with non-obstructive coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: We examined the risk of psychosocial distress, including Type D personality, depressive symptoms, anxiety, positive mood, hostility, and health status fatigue and disease specific and generic quality of life for MACE in patients with non-obstructive coronary artery disease (NOCAD). METHODS: In the Tweesteden mild stenosis (TWIST) study, 546 patients with NOCAD were followed for 10 years to examine the occurrence of cardiac mortality, a major cardiac event, or non-cardiac mortality in the absence of a cardiac event. Cox proportional hazard models were used to examine the impact of

Residual disease is the main, but not the only factor impacting satisfaction in psoriatic patients undergoing biological therapies.

BACKGROUND: Despite advancements in psoriasis treatment, a gap remains in aligning patient satisfaction with clinical outcomes. Our study aimed to evaluate which clinical and psychological factors may impact treatment satisfaction in psoriatic patients undergoing long-term biological therapies. METHODS: We performed an observational, cross-sectional, single-center study involving adult patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis treated with biologics for at least 12 months. We collected sociodemographic characteristics and data on the course of the psoriasis. We also assessed the absolute (re

The association of cardiovascular reactivity during the Trier Social Stress Test with quality of life in coronary artery disease patients.

OBJECTIVE: Knowledge of objective psychophysiological stress parameters and its relationship to health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is limited in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim was to investigate the association of cardiovascular reaction to psychosocial stress with HRQoL in patients with CAD. METHODS: One-hundred and thirty-six patients (84.6% men, age 52 ± 8) within 2-3 weeks after acute coronary syndromes (ACS) during cardiac rehabilitation were recruited in this cross-sectional study. Patients were evaluated for HRQoL (SF-36 questionnaire), symptoms of anxiety and

Psychological correlates, allostatic overload and clinical course in patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).

BACKGROUND: Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is a key treatment option for both primary and secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death. Despite this, there is a growing number of studies showing that ICD is often associated with post-implantation deleterious psychosocial effects, even in the absence of medical complications. Knowledge about the predictive role of pre-ICD psychological profile is scant. The present research aims to describe patients' pre-ICD psychological profile, focusing on acute and chronic distress, such as anxiety, depression, type D personality, psychosomati

Cluster of MMPI personality profiles in chronic tension-type headache and predictable response to Fluoxetine.

A study was made of the personality profiles of a sample of 51 patients with chronic tension-type headache (CTH) employing the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). Two clusters were obtained by applying multivariate classification techniques: cluster 1 (with elevations on scales Hy, D and Hs only) and cluster 2 (exhibiting elevations on most scales except Pd, Mf and Si). Fifty subjects without chronic pain or known psychiatric disorders, and extracted from the same social setting as the patients, completed the MMPI as a control group. Fluoxetine treatment was started in the CTH

Perfectionism dimensions and dependency in relation to personality vulnerability and psychosocial adjustment in patients with coronary artery disease.

The present study sought to illuminate self-criticism and personal standards dimensions of perfectionism and dependency as specific cognitive-personality vulnerability factors that might contribute to a better understanding of numerous psychosocial problem areas that are relevant to coronary artery disease (CAD). One hundred and twenty-three patients diagnosed with clinically significant CAD completed self-report questionnaires. Zero-order correlations and factor analysis results revealed that self-criticism was primarily related to personality vulnerability (aggression/anger/hostility, Type D

Levels of plasma 25-hydroxy vitamin D and risk of developing type 2 diabetes in a large Danish primary health care population.

AIMS: Plasma levels of Vitamin D (25(OH)D) have been suggested as a predictor for developing type 2 diabetes. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate if a measurement of plasma 25(OH)D could predict the development of type 2 diabetes in a cohort of 222,311 individuals from primary healthcare in Denmark. METHODS: The CopD-study database containing data from the Copenhagen General Practitioners Laboratory on blood tests conducted from April 2004 to January 2012 was used for identification of the study population. Incident type 2 diabetes was then defined as having at least two re

Exploring psychological distress among lung cancer patients through the stress system model.

Lung cancer, a leading cause of cancer-related mortality globally, often leads to anxiety, fear and other psychological distress due to its poor prognosis, treatment challenges, and financial burden. Prolonged distress may progress to depression or other mental health disorders, adversely affecting patients' quality of life and treatment outcomes. This study examines the prevalence and determinants of psychological distress in lung cancer patients, offering a theoretical basis for timely clinical interventions. This cross-sectional study applied the stress system model to analyze 435 convenien
