Fowl typhoid and pullorum disease.

Fowl typhoid (FT) and pullorum disease (PD) are septicaemic diseases, primarily of chickens and turkeys, caused by Gram negative bacteria, Salmonella Gallinarum and S. Pullorum, respectively. Clinical signs in chicks and poults include anorexia, diarrhoea, dehydration, weakness and high mortality. In mature fowl, FT and PD are manifested by decreased egg production, fertility, hatchability and anorexia, and increased mortality. Gross and microscopic lesions due to FT and PD in chicks and poults include hepatitis, splenitis, typhlitis, omphalitis, myocarditis, ventriculitis, pneumonia, synoviti

Morphometric analysis of enteric lesions in C3H/HeN mice inoculated with Serpulina hyodysenteriae serotypes 2 and 4 with or without oral streptomycin pretreatment.

The segmental distribution and sequential progression and the role of the indigenous bacterial flora in the development of enteric lesions associated with Serpulina hyodysenteriae infection in laboratory mice have not been defined. We examined the distribution and sequential morphometric changes in the large intestine of mice orally inoculated with S. hyodysenteriae serotypes 2 and 4. To determine the role of colonization resistance conferred by the indigenous bacterial flora, 40 female C3H/HeN mice were administered water alone or water containing 5 mg/mL streptomycin sulfate ad libitum for s

Diagnostic and Clinical Course of Small Colon Recurrent Impaction Associated with Severe Myenteric Ganglionopathy in A Mare.

A 10-year-old Koninklijk Warmbloed Paardenstamboek Nederland (KWPN, Netherlands-based organization for registration of the Dutch Warmblood horses) mare was evaluated three times over four months because of recurrent colic. At every referral, a physical examination revealed a small colon impaction, which partially responded to food deprivation and oral administration of water and magnesium sulphate. Due to the recurrent nature of the small colon impaction, several differential diagnoses were considered: inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), chronic salmonellosis and myenteric ganglionopathies. At f

An Outbreak of Pullorum Disease in a Young Layer Parent Flock in Austria Presented with Central Nervous System Signs.

The present report describes an outbreak of Pullorum disease in a young layer parent stock in Austria. The flock, which comprised 14,220 Lohmann brown layer chickens, experienced high mortality from the first week of life, reaching a total of 1905 chickens in the fifth week, when the flock was depopulated. Clinical signs included uneven size of the chicks, pasty vents, apathy, and diminished water and feed intake, with some birds presenting central nervous system signs such as tremors and torticollis. The postmortem investigation of 43 birds, of ages 1 to 4 weeks, revealed retained yolk sacs f

Diagnosis and management of acute appendicitis in 21 pediatric hematology and oncology patients at a tertiary care cancer center.

Acute appendicitis is a rare gastrointestinal complication of anti-cancer chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Among a cohort of 2341 hemato-oncologic patients at a pediatric tertiary care cancer center, we identified 21 patients (0.9%) with 23 episodes of acute appendicitis, based on pathological imaging of the appendix and clinical findings. Median age at diagnosis was 10.21 years. Types of underlying disease included acute leukemias (n = 15), solid tumors (n = 4), and aplastic anemia (n = 2). Clinical symptoms seen in > 1 case were recorded for all 23 episodes as follow

Colitis and colon cancer in WASP-deficient mice require helicobacter species.

BACKGROUND: Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein-deficient patients and mice are immunodeficient and can develop inflammatory bowel disease. The intestinal microbiome is critical to the development of colitis in most animal models, in which Helicobacter spp. have been implicated in disease pathogenesis. We sought to determine the role of Helicobacter spp. in colitis development in Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein-deficient (WKO) mice. METHODS: Feces from WKO mice raised under specific pathogen-free conditions were evaluated for the presence of Helicobacter spp., after which a subset of mice were

Sensitivity to Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 in mice is dependent on environment and genetic background.

Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) is a well-characterized probiotic bacterium. Although genomic comparisons of EcN with the uropathogenic E. coli strain CFT073 revealed high degrees of similarity, EcN is generally considered a non-pathogenic organism. However, as recent evidence suggests that EcN is capable of inducing inflammatory responses in host intestinal epithelial cells, we aimed to investigate potential pathogenic properties of EcN in an in vivo model using various germ-free (GF) mouse strains. With the exception of C3H/HeJZtm mice, which carry a defective toll-like receptor (TLR)4-al

Sequential oral hydroxyurea and intravenous cytosine arabinoside in refractory childhood acute leukemia: a pediatric oncology group phase 1 study.

At concentrations >0.1 mM, hydroxyurea (HU) enhances the accumulation of cytosine arabinoside (ara-C) in leukemia cells in vitro. This study of children with refractory acute leukemia was designed to take advantage of this biochemical modulation. A fixed dose of HU and an escalating dose of ara-C were used. Oral HU (1200 mg/m2) was followed 2 hours later by ara-C (250-3100 mg/m2) intravenously in 15 minutes. The combination was given on days 1, 2, 3 and 8, 9, 10. Thirty-three children [26 acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), 7 acute nonlymphocytic leukemia] were treated; 29 received at least 1 fu

Oral Inoculation of Point-of-Lay Hens with the New South Wales Outbreak Strain of Salmonella Enteritidis Phage Type 12 Causes Infection, but Minimal Histopathology.

An outbreak of food poisoning in New South Wales (NSW) Australia in 2018, caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis phage type 12 (PT12), was traced to eggs consumed from a NSW layer flock. This was the first report of Salmonella Enteritidis infection in NSW layer flocks, despite ongoing environmental monitoring. Clinical signs and mortalities were minimal in most flocks, although seroconversion and infection were demonstrated in some flocks. An oral dose-response challenge study with Salmonella Enteritidis PT12 was undertaken in commercial point-of-lay hens. Cloacal swabs collected at

Neutropenic Enterocolitis and Sepsis: Towards the Definition of a Pathologic Profile.

Background: Neutropenic enterocolitis (NE), which in the past was also known as typhlitis or ileocecal syndrome for the segment of the gastrointestinal tract most affected, is a nosological entity that is difficult to diagnose and whose pathogenesis is not fully known to date. Initially described in pediatric patients with leukemic diseases, it has been gradually reported in adults with hematological malignancies and non-hematological conditions, such as leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, aplastic anemia, and also myelodysplastic syndromes, as well as being associated with other immunosuppr

Infections with Francisella tularensis biovar palaearctica in hares (Lepus timidus, Lepus europaeus) from Sweden.

The occurrence of tularemia was studied in 1,500 hares submitted to the National Veterinary Institute, Uppsala, Sweden for postmortem examination during 1973 through 1985. A total of 109 tularemia cases was recorded based on the fluorescent antibody (FA) test for Francisella tularensis and on the gross and microscopic pathology. Tularemia was diagnosed only in the varying hare (Lepus timidus) and not in the European brown hare (Lepus europaeus). The geographical distribution of the 109 cases indicates that tularemia has not spread in Sweden during the last 45 yr, with the exception of an endem

Molecular and histopathological characterization of Ascaridia galli and Eimeria tenella co-infection in Numida meleagris.

INTRODUCTION: The helmeted guineafowl is a ground-dwelling bird native to Africa, easily recognized by its bald, bluish-gray head and the distinctive horn-like casque (helmet) on top of its head. Parasitic coinfection with Ascaridia worms and Eimeria in chickens poses a significant health challenge, as both parasites damage the intestinal tract and impair nutrient absorption. Ascaridia galli competes for nutrients and causes mechanical irritation, while Eimeria tenella induces mucosal injury and inflammation. Their combined effect leads to severe enteritis, reduced growth performance, poor fee
