Ulnar nerve entrapment is the second most common compressive neuropathy in the upper extremity because of its anatomy and superficial location. Major aetiological factors in the development of ulnar neuropathy of the elbow are compression, inherent anatomical structures, or lesions within the cubital tunnel. Extrinsic nerve compression may be elicited by acute or recurrent trauma. Nerve mobility may be impeded by congenital deformities. Ulnar nerve dysfunction has been associated with metabolic conditions, certain occupations and athletes involved in repetitive overhead activities. Ulnar nerve

Guyon's canal syndrome is an ulnar nerve entrapment at the wrist or palm that can cause motor, sensory or combined motor and sensory loss due to various factors . In this report, we presented a 66-year-old man admitted to our clinic with a history of intermittent pain in the left palm and numbness in 4th and 5th finger for two years. His neurological examination revealed a sensory impairment in the right fifth finger. Also, physical examination displayed a subcutaneous mobile soft tissue in ulnar side of the wrist. Electromyographic examination confirmed the diagnosis of type-1 Guyon's canal s

After carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome is the second most common compression neuropathy in the upper extremity. Various sites of ulnar nerve compression at the elbow exist, with the most common being between the 2 heads of the flexor carpi ulnaris. Other potential sites include the arcade of Struthers, the space between Osborne's ligament and the medial ulnar collateral ligament, the medial epicondyle, the medial head of the triceps, and the medial intermuscular septum. The anconeus epitrochlearis, an anomalous muscle that runs between the medial aspect of the olecranon and the

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the value of high-resolution ultrasound the diagnosis and prognosis of cubital tunnel syndrome.
METHODS: From January 2018 to June 2019, 47 patients with cubital tunnel syndrome were treated with ulnar nerve release and anterior subcutaneous transposition. There were 41 males and 6 females, aged from 27 to 73 years old. There were 31 cases on the right, 15 cases on the left, and 1 case on both sides. The diameter of ulnar nerve was measured by high-resolution ultrasound pre-and post-operatively, and measured directly during the operation. The recovery status of the pati

Compression syndromes of the radial nerve arise, for example, through pressure in the axilla from crutches or from pressure of the arm against a hard support during sleep. The mechanism is similar in lesions of the median nerves (irritation of the supracondylar apophysis, pronator syndrome). Lesions of the ulnar nerve usually arise from damage to the olecranon groove such as can be caused in manual workers in industry through constant flexion and extension of forearm. As treatment, a change of workplace is often sufficient. Anatomical changes must be removed surgically.

We consider the primary cause of cubital tunnel syndrome caused by osteoarthrosis of the elbow joint to be degenerative osteophytes originating in the humeroulnar joint underneath the ulnar nerve. In the operative procedure the ulnar nerve in the cubital tunnel is fully exposed by cutting the soft tissues covering the nerve, because some of the soft tissues often seem to compress the nerve. Internal neurolysis is performed with microscopy in cases where the constriction is severe. Osteophytes in the humeroulnar joint underneath the nerve are removed. The osteophytes and loose bodies in the ant

MR imaging is a useful technique in the work-up of compressive neuropathies at the wrist, providing fine anatomical detail and excellent diagnostic accuracy. MR imaging, however, should be reserved for those cases in which the clinical and electrodiagnostic findings are inconclusive, the symptoms are unusually severe, or when a tumor is suspected. This article reviews the normal anatomy and the MR imaging features of the most common compressive neuropathies at the wrist: carpal and ulnar tunnel syndromes.

Entrapment neuropathy of the ulnar nerve at the elbow, the so-called cubital tunnel syndrome, is the second most frequent focal mononeuropathy after carpal tunnel syndrome in adults. Currently, there is a pressing need to identify cost-effective biomarkers and procedures capable of accurately detecting alterations in ulnar nerve structural and functional integrity. Established electrophysiological techniques, such as motor and sensory nerve conduction studies, along with needle electromyography of specific muscles, represent the gold standard for ulnar nerve electrodiagnosis. Concurrently, the

The purpose of this study was to evaluate for ulnar nerve instability following incrementally widened in situ decompression. A standard release of the ulnar nerve was performed in 16 cadaveric elbows, extending from 7cm distal to the medial epicondyle, and then released proximally for a total of 10 cm in 2-cm increments. Eight of the 16 elbows (50%) displayed subluxation of the ulnar nerve following complete in situ decompression. The rate of subluxation was found to increase with increasing length of proximal decompression. The greatest increase in rate of subluxation was seen beyond 4 cm pro

Significant excursion of the ulnar nerve is required for unimpeded upper extremity motion. This study evaluated the excursion necessary to accommodate common motions of daily living and associated strain on the ulnar nerve. The 2 most common sites of nerve entrapment, the cubital tunnel and the entrance of Guyon's canal, were studied. Five fresh-frozen, thawed transthoracic cadaver specimens (10 arms) were dissected and the nerve was exposed at the elbow and wrist only enough to be marked with a microsuture. Excursion was measured with a laser mounted on a Vernier caliper fixed to the bone and

We reviewed 41 patients with 43 proximal ulnar nerve compression syndromes. The usual procedure was neurolysis of the ulnar nerve und subcutaneous transposition. The average follow-up period was 5 1/2 years (15 1/4 years to 3 months). The M/F ratio is 2.4:1. Most of the patients are hard manual workers, the dominant arm is most often affected, and 60% have some form of an injury in their history. About half of the patients followed-up have extensive relief of pain, loss of sensibility and weakness of the hand. But only 8 patients feel to have a perfect result. A few do complain of some tendern

INTRODUCTION: Forced elbow flexion and pressure during bicycling result in ulnar nerve traction and pressure exerted in Guyon's canal or the nerve's distal branches. The compression of the nerves causes a change in their stiffness related to edema and eventually gradual fibrosis.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the elastography of terminal branches of the ulnar nerve in cyclists.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
METHODS: Thirty cyclists, 32 healthy individuals, and 32 volunteers with ulnar nerve entrapment neuropathies participated in the study. Each participant underwent a nerve

CASE: A 62-year-old right-hand-dominant woman presented with 1 year of persistent radiating pain, weakness, and paresthesias in her left forearm and hand. Electromyography findings were significant for ulnar neuropathy distal to the branch innervating the flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU), without superimposed cervical radiculopathy or other focal entrapment neuropathy. During open ulnar nerve neurolysis, an intramuscular lipoma was encountered within the FCU. Lipoma excision and cubital tunnel release with ulnar nerve transposition were performed with complete relief of neuropraxia.
CONCLUSION: We

Surgical findings show important alterations of the extrinsic and intrinsic vascularity of the ulnar nerve in the epitroclear groove. Current procedures are only able to solve the mechanical aspect of nerve compression. Transposition may cause additional iatrogenic ischaemic damage of endoneural vascularity if the nerve is separated from the ulnar collateral artery to achieve anterior mobilization. Our technique of transposition of the ulnar nerve with its vascular bundle maintains the advantages of anterior transposition currently in use, but is able to preserve the whole vascularity of the n

The three syndromes described in this article were chosen from about a dozen nerve-compression disorders that affect the arm from scapula to digits. They illustrate the range of problems encountered. None of the other syndromes are as common, and in some instances (pronator syndrome and anterior interosseous syndrome), localized inflammation is at least as common a cause of neuropathy as is compression. Some syndromes of nerve compression have important implications for musicians, athletes, and those who place stress on the upper limbs through heavy or repeated use. Well-designed prospective t

RATIONALE: Autologous peripheral nerve injury caused by crush syndrome due to alcohol intoxication is relatively rare, and to our knowledge, the compression of 3 upper limb nerves at the same time has not been reported previously. If a compressive peripheral nerve injury is not treated in a timely manner, it is difficult to recover neurological function, and the prognosis is poor.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Here, we present a case of a 50-year-old man with ipsilateral radial nerve, median nerve, and ulnar nerve injuries caused by autogenous compression after drunkenness.
DIAGNOSIS: Electromyography a

Ulnar tunnel syndrome is the second most common upper-limb peripheral nerve compression syndrome. Recurrence or persistence of symptoms after primary surgery is found in 9.9%-21% of cases. The main cause of failure is peri- and endo-neural fibrosis, and management is difficult and controversial. Revision of nerve neurolysis combined with freestyle adipofascial flap provides nerve decompression and coverage with vascularized tissue, which prevents scar tissue formation around the nerve and restores glide. We performed a preliminary vessel-injected cadaver study. The perforating vessels from the

The application of microsurgical neurolytic techniques in cases of peripheral nerve entrapments offers greater advantages than other techniques, as it allows a better understanding of the neural alterations. In most cases, a longitudinal epineurectomy is necessary to free the fascicles of the epineural fibrosis. Less frequently, internal neurolysis is needed for removal of interfascicular scarring. Fifty cases of elbow ulnar neuropathy and 58 of the carpal tunnel syndrome were treated with this technique: 72% of the results were satisfactory.

Cubital tunnel syndrome is the second most common compressive neuropathy of the upper limb after carpal tunnel syndrome and results from entrapment of the ulnar nerve around the elbow. High-resolution ultrasound has become a central diagnostic modality because of its excellent spatial resolution, capacity for dynamic assessment, and broad availability in clinical practice. This review offers an integrated and updated overview of the ultrasonographic evaluation of the ulnar nerve in cubital tunnel syndrome, detailing relevant anatomy, characteristic normal and pathological appearances, and key
