The poultry industry is a major global source of animal protein but remains vulnerable to immunosuppressive viral infections that compromise bird health and productivity. This study evaluated five viral purification methods for metagenomic analysis of respiratory samples from broiler chickens in Santa Catarina, Brazil. Three new cases of cryoglobulinaemia are described, and in each case the presence of the cryoglobulin appeared to be unrelated to the clinical manifestations. Although when examined by paper electrophoresis the abnormal proteins behaved uniformly as normal gamma globulins, marked differences in nature were revealed when ultracentrifugal and immunological analyses were made. One patient had an abnormal protein which behaved both as a cryoglobulin and as a macroglobulin.

The level of IgE in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was determined by particle counting immunoassay. With a limit of sensitivity of 0.2 IU/ml, this immunoglobulin was detected neither in CSF of non-neurological patients (n = 27) nor of patients with sciatica (n = 13). Four patients with histories of systemic anaphylaxis or angioedema and urticaria after ingestion of sesame seed or sesame oil-containing products were studied for anti-sesame seed extract IgE by the radioallergosorbent test (RAST). Three of four were found to be positive. RAST inhibition after density-gradient ultracentrifugation of sesame seed extract indicates that the most active allergens appear to have molecular weights between 8,000 to 62,000 daltons.

An ultracentrifugally homogeneous heat-stable polysaccharide preparation free from serologically reactive rabbit testicular tissue antigen, including cardiolipin, was extracted from the Nichols strain of Treponema pallidum, and found to react by complement-fixation with homologous rabbit sera but not with human syphilitic sera. We developed a pre-treatment method to remove interfering substances during quantification of 146S antigens in foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccines by high performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC). This study was designed to quantify the levels of apo(a) and assess their distribution among lipoprotein fractions in type IV hypertriglyceridemia. Plasma density < 1.006 g/mL fraction (VLDL) was obtained by preparative and zonal ultracentrifugation. A soluble substance capable of fixing complement in the presence of immune serum can be separated from the virus. Washed virus fixes complement poorly.
