The genesis of familial and sporadic basal cell carcinomas involves activation of the Sonic hedgehog signal transduction pathway. Other known factors for the development of basal cell carcinoma are ultraviolet exposure, X-rays, race, age, gender and decreased DNA repair capacity. BACKGROUND: Although the basement membrane (BM) phenomenon is considered a good test to differentiate between systemic (SLE) and discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), our observations question its reliability.
METHODS: Direct immunofluorescence stain was done to detect immunoglobulins and complement deposits in 10 SLE patients and in 10 healthy controls. Specimens were taken from the normal skin of the dorsa of hands.

Vitamin D synthesis is traditionally linked to ultraviolet B (UVB) light exposure of its precursors 7-dehydrocholesterol and ergosterol. This study investigated whether ionizing X-ray irradiation can also induce the conversion of sterol precursors into vitamin D. At a dose of 25 kGy, X-rays produced 94 μg/g vitamin D3 from crystalline 7-dehydrocholesterol and 74 μg/g vitamin D2 from crystalline ergosterol. Impacts of falling fragments observed after the eruption of a filament in a solar flare on 7 June 2011 are similar to those inferred for accretion flows on young stellar objects. Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare genodermatosis characterized by a defect in the repair of DNA damage induced by ultraviolet rays. The cutaneous tumours are frequent and occur at an early age, but neoplasias of the mucosae are seldom observed. Among the mucosae, the lipids and the conjunctiva clearly predominate.
