Adolescent extracurricular activities and perception of risk of harm from binge drinking.

Underage binge drinking can lead to numerous adverse health consequences. Preventing excessive alcohol consumption by targeting perception of risk of harm is one approach with demonstrated success. This study examined the association between participation in extracurricular activities and perception of risk of harm from binge drinking among adolescents. A cross-sectional analysis of adolescents aged 12-17 years was performed using the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health dataset. Participation in any extracurricular activity as well as four types of extracurricular activities (e.g., sch

The relationship between psychological distress and adolescent polydrug use.

Polydrug use is relatively common among adolescents. Psychological distress is associated with the use of specific drugs, and may be uniquely associated with polydrug use. The purpose of this study was to test the association of psychological distress with polydrug use using a large adolescent sample. The sample consisted of 10,273 students aged 12-17 years from the State of Victoria, Australia. Participants completed frequency measures of tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, inhalant, and other drug use in the past 30 days, and psychological distress. Control variables included age, gender, family soc

Predictive factors of alcohol initiation among Brazilian adolescents: assessing the role of attitudes, decision-making, communication, and resistance skills.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether attitudes toward drug use, as well as decision-making, communication, and alcohol resistance skills, act as predictors of alcohol use and binge drinking initiation among Brazilian students, considering sex differences. METHODS: In a longitudinal sample of 1,103 seventh-grade students from 15 Brazilian public schools, we explored if attitudes toward drug use and decision-making, communication, and alcohol resistance skills at baseline predicted alcohol outcomes 9 months later. RESULTS: Lower levels of resistance skills (i.e., ORboys = 0.29; 95%CI 0.12-0.70) and

#drunktwitter: Examining the relations between alcohol-related Twitter content and alcohol willingness and use among underage young adults.

PURPOSE: Despite the importance of social networking sites on young adult alcohol use, few studies have examined Twitter as a conduit for sharing drinking behavior. However, this work generally uses random samples of tweets and thus cannot determine the extent to which Tweets correspond with self-reported drinking cognitions or behaviors. The primary aims of the present study were to (1) document basic patterns of alcohol-related Twitter activity in a subsample of young adult drinkers, and (2) examine whether willingness to drink, alcohol use, and negative consequences are associated with alco

Predictors of self-reported alcohol use and attitudes toward alcohol among 11-year-old British children with and without intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: Reducing harmful levels of alcohol consumption among children is an important public health concern internationally and in many high income countries. Little is known about levels and predictors of alcohol use among children with intellectual disability (ID). METHOD: Secondary analysis of child self-report data at age 11 years collected in the UK's Millennium Cohort Study. RESULTS: Children with ID were significantly more likely to: have used alcohol in the last 4 weeks; to have had five or more alcoholic drinks on one occasion; to have had five or more alcoholic drinks or been i

Longitudinal patterns of threat- and deprivation-based childhood adversity and their impact on adolescent drinking, smoking, and depression.

PURPOSE: Emerging neuroimaging and biopsychological evidence suggests that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may have distinct effects on youth development depending on their type, timing, and duration. However, much of the existing research has emphasized cumulative exposure, often overlooking the unique characteristics of these experiences. The present study, therefore, aimed to (1) identify heterogeneous patterns of ACEs by accounting for both type and timing, and (2) examine the differential effects of these patterns on youth substance use and depression. METHODS: We used longitudinal

Situational correlates of adolescents' alcohol outcome expectancies in daily life.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol outcome expectancies (AOEs), formed in early childhood, are correlates of future alcohol consumption and related problems. Social-cognitive theories suggest that AOEs become activated in specific social and physical location contexts. Prior research, primarily among university students, has aimed to identify situational influences on specific AOEs, as indexed by reports of AOEs in hypothetical drinking scenarios. This study aims to deepen understanding of AOE activation in real-world settings by examining social and physical situational correlates of AOE activation among ado

Association between adolescent alcohol use and cognitive function in young adulthood: A co-twin comparison study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Studies on adolescent alcohol use and cognition are often unable to separate the potential causal effects of alcohol use on cognition from shared etiological influences, including genetic influences or other substance use comorbidities also known to be associated with cognition, such as nicotine use. The present study aimed to fill this gap and clarify the relationship between adolescent alcohol use and young adult cognition by accounting for both measured and unmeasured confounders. DESIGN: A random effects model accounting for nesting in families was used to control for

Naltrexone moderates the association of alcohol use and affect among adolescent drinkers in daily life.

BACKGROUND: Naltrexone is an efficacious medication for the treatment of alcohol use disorder in adults. As an opioid receptor antagonist, naltrexone blocks activation of the endogenous opioid system, which is involved in the affectively reinforcing properties of substance use. Few studies, however, have examined the moderating effect of naltrexone on the association between affect and alcohol use. Additionally, most existing research on naltrexone has been with adults in the human laboratory. METHOD: We conducted a secondary analysis of ecological momentary assessment data from a randomized,

Lifetime Alcohol Use Influences the Association Between Future-Oriented Thought and White Matter Microstructure in Adolescents.

AIMS: Future orientation, or the ability to plan ahead and anticipate consequences, is a capacity that develops during adolescence, yet its underlying neurobiology is unknown. Previous independent reports suggest that reduced future orientation and altered white matter microstructure are associated with greater alcohol use in adolescents; however, these effects have not been studied in conjunction. This study investigated the association between future orientation and white matter microstructure as a function of lifetime alcohol use. METHODS: Seventy-seven adolescents (46 female; 15-21 years

Screening and Counseling for Alcohol Use in Adolescents With Chronic Medical Conditions in the Ambulatory Setting.

PURPOSE: We seek to determine how youth with chronic medical conditions experience alcohol screening and counseling. METHODS: Adolescents with type I diabetes, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, moderate persistent asthma, cystic fibrosis, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or inflammatory bowel disease were surveyed. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis quantified rates of asking and counseling about alcohol. RESULTS: Of 390 participants (75.1% white/non-Hispanic, 51.8% female, average age 16.4 years), 70% reported being asked about their alcohol use by a healthcare provider, a

Anger-irritability as a mediator of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder risk for adolescent alcohol use and the contribution of coping skills.

BACKGROUND: Research on susceptibility to alcohol use disorder within the attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) population has begun to expand examination of putative moderators and mediators in order to develop effective treatments. Specific dysregulated emotions have been separately associated with ADHD and with alcohol use difficulties. The current study is the first to conjointly study these variables by testing anger-irritability as a mediator of ADHD risk for adolescent alcohol use. METHODS: Frequency of binge drinking, drunkenness, and alcohol problems were examined for 142 c

Trends in adolescent alcohol and other risky health- and school-related behaviours and outcomes in Australia.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent drinking has been declining in Australia over the past two decades, but this trend may be part of a broader shift towards healthier lifestyles for adolescents. We examined trends in the prevalence of multiple risky health- and school-related behaviours and outcomes to test whether this was the case. METHODS: Data on multiple behaviours and outcomes were collated from Australian government agencies and other relevant sources for 10-19-year-olds from the year 2000 onward. Trends were examined descriptively. RESULTS: Rates of substance use, youth offending and injuries

Blackouts among male and female youth seeking emergency department care.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related blackouts are a common consequence of heavy drinking, and these blackouts pose risk for injury and other adverse health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence and correlates of blackouts among underage drinkers. METHODS: Youth (ages 14-20) presenting to a suburban Emergency Department (ED) completed screening surveys. Among those reporting past-year alcohol consumption, we examined past 3-month blackouts in relation to: background characteristics (e.g., demographics, fraternity/sorority involvement), substance use, sexual risk behaviors and incapacitated s

Assessing the impact of Lithuania's 2018 alcohol marketing ban on adolescent alcohol use by comparing trends with five EU control countries: a study protocol for a secondary data analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol consumption poses a significant health risk, contributing to 10% of deaths in the WHO European Region. To combat this, the WHO recommends the implementation of its 'best buy' policies-three cost-effective alcohol policies that include higher taxes, restricted availability and marketing bans. While evidence links alcohol marketing to increased consumption, the effectiveness of marketing bans in decreasing alcohol use remains inconclusive. Lithuania's 2018 comprehensive alcohol marketing ban offers a unique opportunity to measure the impact of this particular 'best buy' con

The Impact of the Minimum Legal Drinking Age on Alcohol-Related Chronic Disease Mortality.

BACKGROUND: The minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) of 21 has been associated with a number of benefits compared to lower MLDAs, including long-term effects, such as reduced risk for alcoholism in adulthood. However, no studies have examined whether MLDA during young adulthood is associated with mortality later in life. We examined whether individuals exposed to permissive MLDA (<21) had higher risk of death from alcohol-related chronic disease compared to those exposed to the 21 MLDA. Because prior work suggests that MLDA affects college students differently, we also conducted conditional analy
