Cryptosporidiosis in an urban community.

Over three months Cryptosporidium oocysts were identified in faecal samples from 43 (5%) of 867 patients presenting to their general practitioners with gastrointestinal symptoms. Cryptosporidium was the second most common enteric pathogen identified. Of the 867 patients, 329 were children aged under 5, of whom 24 (7%) excreted Cryptosporidium. A characteristic clinical presentation of infection with Cryptosporidium was recognised--namely, mild gastroenteritis with four to six watery, mucoid, and offensive motions a day, which lasted for one to two weeks. The source of infection was not identif

From urban to alpine: environmental microbial transfer in urban adults - the ALM Study.

BACKGROUND: Urbanization is linked to reduced microbial exposure, increased prevalence of lifestyle-related diseases, and diminished psychological resilience. In contrast, traditional alpine farming environments offer high biodiversity and low pollution, potentially promoting restorative health effects. The ALM Study (ALpine Farming and Human Nasal Microbiome Diversity) explored the feasibility and physiological impact of a 7-day immersion in such an environment among previously unexposed ("Alm-naive") individuals. METHODS: This prospective, single-arm feasibility study was conducted in the R

Molecular survey on vector-borne pathogens in urban and peri-urban rodents in Spain.

Rodents are key reservoirs and spillover hosts of major pathogens at the wildlife-domestic-human interface, playing a pivotal role in the eco-epidemiology of vector-borne diseases. Nevertheless, data on rodent infection by pathogens of animal and public health relevance remain limited, particularly in anthropized landscapes. This study aimed to evaluate the circulation of Leishmania infantum, Bartonella spp., and Hepatozoon spp. in rodent populations from anthropized areas in Spain, and to identify potential risk factors associated with infection by these pathogens. Spleen samples from 345 rod

The extent and structure of pig rearing system in urban and peri-urban areas of Guwahati.

Livestock is common in Indian cities and contribute to food security as well as livelihoods. Urban livestock keeping has been neglected, and in India, little is known about the topic. Therefore, urban and peri-urban pig farms of Guwahati, Assam, India, were surveyed in order to understand more about the pig rearing systems and risks of diseases. A total of 34 urban and 66 peri-urbanpig farms were selected randomly. All reared cross-bred pigs. Free-range pig rearing was common in both urban (58.8%) and peri-urban (45.45%) farms. Artificial insemination was used by around half of the pig farmers

Evaluating the impact of "Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans" on urban background air quality.

Air quality in European cities is still a challenge, with various urban areas frequently exceeding the PM2.5 and NO2 concentration levels allowed by the European Union Air Quality Standards. This is a problem both in terms of legislation compliance, but also in terms of health of citizens, as it has been recently estimated that 400 to 450 thousand people die prematurely every year due to poor air quality. Air quality in cities can be improved with a number of interventions, at different sectoral (industry, traffic, residential, etc …) and geographical (international, European, national, local,

[How is breast-feeding valued in the urban and semi-urban Central African milieu?].

Efforts have been made for several years to promote the use of breast milk by mothers. This is important for mothers in developing countries faced with economic problems, especially for those tempted by milk substitutes. Fortunately, BF (breast feeding) is used by a majority of women in these developing countries, its practice is often influenced by an early introduction of supplements. Why this early supplementation? In order to answer this question we performed this study, a transversal survey of mothers in neonatal period in a regional town and the capital of Central Africa. The compilation

Diversity and distinctive characteristics of the global RNA virome in urban and peri-urban environments.

RNA viruses represent an integral component of human-associated environments and human health. However, the ecology of environmental RNA viruses remains largely unexplored. Here, we analyzed 2922 metatranscriptomic samples collected from urban and surrounding environments-including human-dense settings (e.g., transit hubs, hospitals, banks), alongside peri-urban settings - across 102 cities in 31 countries and constructed the Urban & Peri-urban RNA Virus Atlas (UPVAtlas), comprising 54,945 RNA viruses, 77% of which had not been previously observed. Phylogenetic reconstruction based on RNA-depe

Dogs as Sentinels for Flavivirus Exposure in Urban, Peri-Urban and Rural Hanoi, Vietnam.

Diseases caused by flaviviruses, including dengue fever and Japanese encephalitis, are major health problems in Vietnam. This cross-sectional study explored the feasibility of domestic dogs as sentinels to better understand risks of mosquito-borne diseases in Hanoi city. A total of 475 dogs serum samples from 221 households in six districts of Hanoi were analyzed by a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA) for antibodies to the pr-E protein of West Nile virus and other flaviviruses due to cross-reactivity. The overall flavivirus seroprevalence in the dog population was 70.7% (9

Echinococcus multilocularis infections in dogs from urban and peri-urban areas in France.

Echinococcus multilocularis is the causative agent of alveolar echinococcosis, a severe zoonotic disease. It is maintained through a sylvatic life cycle based on predator-prey interactions mainly between foxes and rodents. Dogs are also good definitive hosts; and due to their close proximity to humans, they may represent a major risk factor for the occurrence of human cases. In two medium-sized cities of Eastern France (Annemasse and Pontarlier), located in highly endemic areas, 817 dog feces samples were collected and analyzed by a flotation technique followed by a multiplex PCR assay. For th

Role of new urbanization in tourism supply-demand evolution within the urban agglomeration via driving mechanisms and obstacle diagnosis.

Urban agglomerations serve as a critical vehicle for advancing high-quality regional urbanization, with the Lanzhou-Xining (Lanxi) urban agglomeration representing an advanced stage of urbanization in western China. As a nationally significant urban agglomeration in the western region, the Lanxi urban agglomeration also functions as a vital ecological barrier. Studying the supply and demand dynamics of ecotourism in this area is therefore important for the development of ecotourism and for promoting sustainable regional tourism practices. Based on this premise, this study focuses on the supply

Urban Waste Management, Air Quality, and Public Health: Assessing the Health Burden of Rapid Urbanization in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Rapid urbanization in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is placing increasing pressure on waste management systems and urban air quality, with significant health implications. This study integrates cross-city analysis of waste systems, air quality, and health burdens in rapidly urbanizing SSA. It examines the links between waste practices, pollution, and health outcomes in fast-growing SSA cities using international and national data sources. Inadequate collection, open dumping and burning, and poorly regulated landfills elevate pollutant concentrations, particularly PM2.5, frequently exceeding World H

Urbanization impacts the environmental microbial community and its antibiotic phenotypic resistance potential by reshaping the diversity and network complexity.

Urbanization imposes severe anthropogenic pressures on ecosystems, yet its impacts on the structural cohesion of environmental microbiomes and the co-occurrence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remain poorly understood. Here, we combined metabarcoding (16S/ITS2) with in vitro AMR screening of cultivable isolates across aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in Nouvelle-Aquitaine (France). Random Forest models (RFM), co-occurrence and bipartite networks were used to quantify ecological drivers and evaluate network resilience via percolation simulations. While urbanization categorical diversity ind

Prevalence of Chronic Diseases and Alterations of Gut Microbiome in People of Ningxia China During Urbanization: An Epidemiological Survey.

The continuous development of urbanization has dramatically changed people's living environment and lifestyle, accompanied by the increased prevalence of chronic diseases. However, there is little research on the effect of urbanization on gut microbiome in residents. Here we investigated the relation between living environment and gut microbiota in a homogenous population along an urban-rural gradient in Ningxia China. According to the degree of urbanization, the population is divided into four groups: mountainous rural (MR) represents non-urbanized areas, mountainous urban (MU) and plain rura

Impact of urbanization factors on mortality due to unintentional injuries using panel data regression model and spatial-temporal analysis.

Unintentional injuries pose a great risk for human health in China. Few studies have focused on unintentional injuries at national level from urbanization perspective. The panel data of mortality rate of transportation accidents (TA), fall and drowning and sinking (DS) is investigated, and urbanization development index is collected. Global Moran's I and linear regression of panel data are applied to determine the spatial distribution and spatial influencing factors of unintentional injuries. The results are the following: (1) The unintentional injury such as TA, fall, and DS shows clear non-u
