The tuberculin skin test in the diagnosis of tuberculous uveitis.

Of 18 patients (seven men and 11 women, ranging in age from 15 to 63 years) with presumed tuberculous uveitis seen between 1970 and 1982, 11 had intermediate-strength tuberculin skin test responses of less than 10 mm of induration. Similarly, nine had intermediate-strength responses of less than 5 mm of induration. Thus, any response of erythema or induration may be significant in the diagnosis of tuberculous uveitis and evidence enough for further testing with an isoniazid therapeutic trial.

Drug-induced uveitis: A review.

Uveitis maybe induced by the use of various medications known as drug-induced uveitis (DIU), though rare it is an important cause of uveitis which one needs to be aware of. The drugs may be administered through any route including systemic, topical, and intravitreal. Ocular inflammation can be in the form of anterior, intermediate, posterior or pan uveitis, and rarely may present as episcleritis and scleritis. Identification of drug as the offending agent of uveitis is important as many a times stopping the drug may help recover the uveitis or the concomitant use of corticosteroids. An extensi

Tofacitinib for refractory uveitis and scleritis.

PURPOSE: To report the successful use of tofacitinib in the treatment of refractory uveitis and scleritis. OBSERVATIONS: Two patients, one with scleritis and another with anterior and intermediate uveitis, presented with refractory disease after failure of multiple steroid-sparing therapies. Treatment with tofacitinib led to durable resolution of uveitis and scleritis. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPORTANCE: Tofacitinib is a potential novel treatment option for refractory, noninfectious inflammatory eye disease.

A uveitis register at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

In the study of uveitis, epidemiology is frequently neglected. Our uveitis register consisted of data collected on all uveitis patients except minor, easily resolved, anterior uveitis cases at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. The diagnoses of these patients were classified by the aetiological method. A total of 712 patients was entered into the register over a period of 10 years starting from January 1985. In the study, 73.0% of the cases fit into named clinical syndromes while 27.0% of the cases were diagnosed as idiopathic but uncategorised. The commonest definable cause of anterior uveitis wa

Endogenous uveitis: experiences in Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital.

BACKGROUND: The distribution of uveitis varies in different parts of the world, which is attributed to geographic, alimentary or genetic factors. Epidemiological studies in uveitis may be extremely important in an effort to better understand the etiology of the disease and the classification of its subtypes. The purpose of this study was to determine the profile and characteristics of endogenous uveitis in southern Taiwan. METHODS: Retrospective chart review ofthe patients diagnosed and treated as endogenous uveitis in Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital from January 1991 to December 2000 was

Definite multiple sclerosis and uveitis: a two cases report.

Uveitis has infrequently been described as a manifestation of ocular inflammation in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Two patients with pre-existing definite MS and uveitis were described. The first patient had features of intermediate uveitis, and the second case had a features of retinal periphlebitis. However, each patient had neurologic signs consistent with MS and a negative laboratory tests for inflammatory and infectious diseases. The presence of neurological involvement with uveitis need a sequential diagnostic search.

Corticosteroid implants for chronic non-infectious uveitis.

BACKGROUND: Uveitis is a term used to describe a group of intraocular inflammatory diseases. Uveitis is the fifth most common cause of vision loss in high-income countries, with the highest incidence of disease in the working-age population. Corticosteroids are the mainstay of treatment for all subtypes of non-infectious uveitis. They can be administered orally, topically with drops, by periocular (around the eye) or intravitreal (inside the eye) injection, or by surgical implantation. OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficacy and safety of steroid implants in people with chronic non-infectious p

The Role of the Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Thickness on OCT in the Evaluation of Papillitis in Childhood Uveitis.

PURPOSE: To investigate the diagnostic value of using retinal nerve fiber layer thickness measured on optical coherence tomography (OCT-RNFL) to diagnose papillitis in pediatric uveitis. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: Demographic and clinical data were collected retrospectively for 257 children with uveitis (with 455 affected eyes). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to compare fluorescein angiography (FA, the diagnostic gold standard for papillitis) to OCT-RNFL in a subgroup of 93 patients. An ideal cut-off value for OCT-RNFL was then determined by

BACKGROUND: To explore the clinical characteristics of dabrafenib-associated uveitis and provide a basis for diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: The database was retrieved to collect reports of dabrafenib-associated uveitis and clinical data were collected for retrospective analysis. RESULTS: Twenty-six patients were included in the study, with a median age of 56 years (range 30, 75). The onset time of uveitis was 3 months (range 0.75, 96) after administration. The types of uveitis were pan-uveitis (38.5%), anterior uveitis (34.6%), posterior uveitis (15.4%), and intermediate uveitis (3.8%). F

PURPOSE: To analyze the patterns and etiologies of uveitis at a tertiary referral center in Taiwan. METHODS: This retrospective chart review of uveitis patients from January 2001 to December 2014 updates a previous study a decade ago (2003). RESULTS: We identified 450 patients, among whom anterior uveitis was most common, followed by panuveitis, posterior uveitis, and intermediate uveitis. A specific diagnosis was identified in 331 patients.
