Acceptability and accessibility of a Shigellosis vaccine in Nha Trang city of Viet Nam.

The acceptability and accessibility of a hypothetical Shigella vaccination campaign was explored. A household survey was conducted with 539 randomly-selected residents of six communes in Nha Trang city of Viet Nam. Four categories of acceptability, such as refusers, low acceptors, acceptors, and high acceptors, were established, Refusers were significantly more likely to be elderly women and were less likely to know the purpose of vaccinations. Low acceptors tended to be male, elderly, and live in urban areas. Low acceptors perceived the disease as less serious and themselves as less vulnerabl

[New assumptions in the concept of vaccine prophylaxis of infantile infections].

An essential reduction in the incidence rate of six infantile infections within the Expanded Immunization Program was accompanied by occurrence of new problems in vaccine prophylaxis. 1. Vaccine-dependence--the reoccurrence of vaccine-prevented infections in those cases when vaccination was stopped. 2. A choice of strategy in the immune prophylaxis of poliomyelitis during the post-liquidation period bearing in mind the elimination of vaccine strains from the human population and a possible global refusal from vaccination. 3. Elaboration of regional programs for eliminating the measles in big t

A single dedicated vaccination visit improves vaccination coverage of patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

INTRODUCTION: Patients treated with biologics for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have an increased risk of severe infections. Real-life vaccination coverage in this population remains low despite international vaccination guidelines. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a dedicated vaccination visit on vaccination coverage. METHODS: A dedicated vaccination visit was offered to all patients admitted for an infusion of a biologic in a tertiary IBD center during a 4-week period. At baseline, vaccination status was collected. Patients received specific information on recommended

Qualitative Assessment of Vaccine Hesitancy in Romania.

Background and objectives: Health systems all over the world are confronted with an alarming rise of cases in which individuals hesitate, delay, and even refuse vaccination, despite availability of quality vaccine services. In order to mitigate and combat this phenomenon, which are now defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as vaccine hesitancy (VH), we must first understand the factors that lead to its occurrence in an era characterized by wide access to safe and effective vaccines. To achieve this, we conducted field testing of the Vaccine Hesitancy Scale (VHS), as it was developed b

Clinical Practices for Measles-Mumps-Rubella Vaccination Among US Pediatric International Travelers.

IMPORTANCE: The US population is experiencing a resurgence of measles, with more than 1000 cases during the first 6 months of 2019. Imported measles cases among returning international travelers are the source of most US measles outbreaks, and these importations can be reduced with pretravel measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination of pediatric travelers. Although it is estimated that children account for less than 10% of US international travelers, pediatric travelers account for 47% of all known measles importations. OBJECTIVE: To examine clinical practice regarding MMR vaccination of pediat

Engage less, provide more: Community health workers' perspectives on how to overcome opposition to polio vaccination in Pakistan.

Pakistan has 40 Super High Risk Union Councils (SHRUCs) where polio has been persistently endemic, and community relationships have been a persistent challenge due to campaign fatigue and violent, organised resistance. This study aimed to gather perspectives from frontline workers in these areas to improve community engagement. We conducted participant observation, over 100 interviews, and held Human-centred Design inspired sessions with 171 teams of frontline polio staff from 2020 to 2022 in the SHRUCs of a major city in Pakistan. The results show that frontline polio workers repeatedly visit

Compulsory Vaccination and the Turkish Constitutional Court.

As vaccine hesitancy is on the rise around the world, apex courts in some countries have confronted the difficult task of striking a fair balance between individual rights and the common good. Against this background, the article discusses the compulsory vaccination cases heard by the Turkish Constitutional Court (TCC). The TCC's case law illustrates that any interference with bodily integrity must first comply with the principle of lawfulness and its rulings addressed an important shortage of the current Turkish compulsory childhood vaccination policy. The article suggests that the principle

Vaccination Litigation: The Need for Rethinking Compensation for Victims of Vaccination Injury.

Opposition to vaccination has a lengthy history dating back to shortly after the discoveries by Jenner in relation to smallpox. In recent years though governments have sought to counter the concerns of anti-vaccinationists in a variety of ways, including legislatively in Australia, in an effort to protect against childhood diseases and to maintain herd immunity. However, cases continue to make their way through the courts where parents oppose the vaccination of their children, often inspired by the views of both registered and unregistered health practitioners, including homeopaths and chiropr

Kansas Provider Report of Adolescent Vaccinations in Their Practice.

BACKGROUND: Kansas falls consistently below average for adolescent vaccination of meningococcal (MCV), human papillomavirus (HPV), and influenza. METHODS: For this study, the members of Kansas Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics were emailed a confidential electronic survey soliciting their impressions of vaccination in their practice. RESULTS: Of 137 providers emailed, 61 (45%) completed the survey. Thirteen providers were excluded as they did not see/vaccinate adolescents or did not complete the survey. Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap), and MCV vaccines were most commonly up

Challenges, best practices, and lessons learned from oral cholera mass vaccination campaign in urban Cameroon during the COVID-19 era.

BACKGROUND: Since 1971, Cameroon has been facing an ever-growing series of cholera epidemics; despite all the efforts made by the government to address this substantial public health problem. In 2020, in addition to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cameroon recorded a high cholera case fatality rate of 5.3% following epidemics noted in the South, Littoral, and South-West regions which is far higher than the 1% World Health Organization acceptable rate. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The Ministry of Public Health organized a reactive vaccination campaign against cholera to address the high mortality ra

[Influenza vaccination: coverage and risk perception among students of the health professions at Florence University, Italy].

BACKGROUND: It is well demonstrated that influenza vaccination coverage among health care workers and health professions students continues to be low, despite WHO and CDCs strongly recommend flu shot for these categories. Aim of this work is to investigate among students the flu risk perception (both seasonal and 2009 H1N1), knowledge and attitudes towards vaccination and the main factors of acceptance or refusal of the vaccination. METHODS: The study population includes 662 health professions students from the University of Florence. Survey was conducted from October 2010 to March 2011 by an

Herd immunity and the harm principle: Too narrow or too broad.

In this commentary, I will contend that one of Pierik and Verweij's central arguments for vaccine mandates faces significant obstacles because of their attempt to apply Mill's harm principle. More specifically, they argue that vaccine refusal is harmful because of its relationship to the collective good of herd immunity. I suggest that Pierik and Verweij oscillate between two interpretations of the harm principle: a narrow interpretation and a broad one. The narrow interpretation, however, does not justify mandates because it is implausible that one individual's act of vaccine refusal makes a

BACKGROUND: In Tamil Nadu, where health indicators are above the national average and routine immunization coverage is >95%, the tepid response to Measles-Rubella (MR) mass vaccination campaign was unexpected. Several parents refused MR vaccine for their children, due to false news claiming inefficiency and adverse effects due to the vaccine. AIM: This study was conducted to assess the Measles-Rubella (MR) mass vaccination coverage and to know the motivating factors and barriers for vaccination. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a rural area immediately following the mass vac

The ongoing challenge of prevention of pertussis in infants: what's new in 2024?

INTRODUCTION: Pertussis, a respiratory disease caused primarily by Bordetella pertussis, is undergoing a resurgence despite decades of high rates of vaccination. The prevention of pertussis in infants presents several challenges, including the waning immunity of the acellular pertussis (aP) vaccine, the limited protection afforded to newborns before they complete the vaccine series, and the existence of gaps in maternal vaccination. Furthermore, the unwillingness or refusal of a considerable number of individuals, including some healthcare workers, to receive vaccinations represents another si
