Abnormal vaginal discharge may be caused by bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, trichomoniasis and/or aerobic vaginitis. For the development of a diagnostic algorithm, tree-based classification analysis was performed on symptoms, signs and bedside test results of 56 patients, and laboratory tests (culture, Nugent score, qPCRs) were compared. Amplicon sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene was used as reference test for bacterial vaginosis and aerobic vaginitis, culture for vulvovaginal candidiasis and qPCR for trichomoniasis. For bacterial vaginosis, the best diagnostic algorithm was to sc

Endometritis, diagnosed either by assessing the proportion of nucleated cells that are neutrophils (PMN%) following cytology of the endometrium or by assessing the degree of purulent material within the vagina (purulent vaginal discharge or PVD score), is prevalent among dairy cows. However, limited data exist as to the degree of variation among herds in the prevalence of endometritis diagnosed by these 2 methods. Thus, we undertook a study involving uterine cytological and vaginal sampling at a median of 41 d in milk of 1,807 cows from 100 seasonally breeding dairy herds in New Zealand. The o

Vaginal mucus during estrus was examined with the Metricheck device and the relationship to the reproduction of high-yielding dairy cows was studied. The study was conducted in 99 dairy herds located in Western Germany and 1348 Holstein-Friesian heifers and cows showing spontaneous estrus were examined. Independent of the Metricheck result, the animals were inspected by professional insemination technicians and those suitable for insemination (n = 989) were bred by artificial insemination (AI). Reproductive performance was characterized by non-return rate at 90 days (NRR90). The discharge of t

Abnormal vaginal discharge (AVD) caused by a variety of reproductive tract infections is a widespread syndrome among women in India and in other developing countries. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a polyherbal formulation, Praneem, can be used for the regression of the syndrome. A phase IotaIota randomized controlled study was carried out with Praneem polyherbal tablets and Betadine vaginal pessary in 99 women with AVD. The authors found that 92% of women using Praneem were relieved of their symptoms of AVD as against 81.6% women using Betadine. Significant reduction was a

Vaginal discharge in children can be due to many causes. Foreign body in vagina is an unusual cause. Foul-smelling, blood-stained vaginal discharge should raise the suspicion of foreign body in vagina. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), vaginal examination under general anesthesia may detect foreign bodies in vagina. We found a cotton fiber ball in vagina, probably caused by the child's teddy bear as a cause of vaginal discharge in a 5-year-old child. A repeat MRI suggested foreign body in the vagina and vaginal exploration under general anesthesia helped for the removal of cotton fiber ball, w

Cultures for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are frequently obtained as part of an evaluation for alleged sexual abuse, but the prevalence of STDs in abused children is very low. Furthermore, STDs in children may not be identified if the clinician does not maintain a high index of suspicion in the symptomatic child. A retrospective review was done to study the symptoms and presenting complaints of girls under 12 with gonorrhea and chlamydia infections and to examine the prevalence of STDs in asymptomatic girls. The charts of 622 patients were reviewed. All patients were females under 12,

The relevance of volatile fatty acids as a diagnostic test in 79 women with abnormal vaginal discharge was evaluated by a blind, randomised, and placebo controlled trial of tinidazole as a single oral 2 g dose. Automated gas chromatography of ether extracts of discharges taken before treatment showed volatile fatty acids in 18. Volatile fatty acids correlated with malodorous, colour, and microscopically assessed altered bacterial flora and clue cells. At follow up one week later, the odour, colour, and volatile fatty acids in the vaginal discharge of women treated with tinidazole had become no

Background: Mixed vaginal infection involves the simultaneous presence of at least two types of vaginitis, including bacterial vaginosis (BV) and vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), BV and Trichomonas vaginalis (TV), or TV and VVC. This condition disrupts the vaginal milieu, resulting in significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, recurrent infections, and increased antimicrobial resistance. This study aimed to assess the mixed vaginal infections and their predictors among women with abnormal vaginal discharges attending gynecological clinics in western Uganda. Methods: A cross-sectional st

BACKGROUND: Vaginal discharge is one of the most common gynecological complaints among women of reproductive age. Its effective management depends on the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of primary health care physicians. In regions such as Alahsa, Saudi Arabia, assessing physician competence is essential to improve patient outcomes and address cultural and systemic barriers to care.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2024 among 233 primary health care physicians in Alahsa. Participants were selected using a convenience sampling technique. Data were collected through a

Introduction Vaginal discharge (VD) is a common condition that affects women during their childbearing years and often requires medical attention. It results from the physiological secretion of cervical and Bartholin's glands, as well as the shedding of vaginal epithelial cells caused by bacterial action in the vagina, which alters the acidic environment of the vagina. Experiencing vaginal symptoms is a common reason for seeking medical attention, especially among women during their reproductive years. This often leads to a visit to an obstetrician or a gynecologist. Accordingly, addressing su

Rumen-protected choline (RPC) promotes benefits in milk production, immunity, and health in dairy cows by optimizing lipid metabolism during transition period management and early lactation. However, the RPC success in dairy cows depends on choline bioavailability, which is affected by the type of protection used in rumen-protected choline. Therefore, our objectives were to determine the effects of a novel RPC on dry matter intake (DMI), identify markers of metabolism and immunity, and evaluate lactation performance. Dry Holstein (n = 48) cows at 245 ± 3 d of gestation were blocked by parity a

BACKGROUND: Trichomonas vaginalis and genital Mycoplasmas are two synergistic pathogens, but in many settings, limited data on the co-infection by Trichomonas and Mycoplasma are available.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at assessing Mycoplasma prevalence and its association with Trichomonas vaginalis among women with vaginal discharge.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of laboratory records (2012 and 2013) from patients referred at the Fann teaching hospital in Dakar Senegal for vaginal discharge was carried out. Detection of genital mycoplasmas was based on the commercial Kit Myc

Studies of treatment of postpartum endometritis in dairy cows indicate that prostaglandin (PGF2α) might result in similar outcomes as intrauterine antibiotics, but the effect might depend on the presence of a CL. The objective was to compare reproductive performance in cows with purulent vaginal discharge treated on the basis of having or not having a CL (CL-dependent treatment; CLdep), versus treatment of all affected cows with an intrauterine antibiotic alone. Cows (N = 756) from 36 seasonal calving dairy herds in New Zealand were enrolled on the basis of having a vaginal discharge score (VD

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is the most common cause of vaginal discharge among women. The present study aimed to investigate the synergistic anticandidal effect of lactobacillus cultures supplemented with plant extracts. Among 600 isolates of lactic acid bacteria, 41 isolates exhibited inhibitory activity against Candida albicans ATCC10231. Six out of 41 cell-free supernatants demonstrated the most potent antibacterial and anticandidal activities. They also inhibited the clinical isolates of C. albicans, causing VVC and non-C. albicans. The synergistic effect between Lactobacillus crispatu

Despite the rapid growth in popularity of the Jersey breed, most research on dairy cows in the United States has been done with the Holstein breed. Postpartum uterine diseases negatively influence reproductive performance of dairy cows and limited data are available regarding predisposing factors for uterine diseases in Jersey cows. Our objectives were to determine the prevalence and risk factors for purulent vaginal discharge (PVD) and its effect on fertility of lactating Jersey cows. This was a retrospective observational study with data collected from 3,822 Jersey cows. The Metricheck devic

Prepubertal vaginal discharge is most commonly caused by vulvovaginitis and is rarely caused by lymphatic malformations, resulting in chylous vaginal discharge. The diagnosis of chylous vaginal discharge remains a challenge because of a knowledge gap. We describe a 12-year-old girl with intermittent vaginal discharge for 10 years. Although we found a high signal in the vagina on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the final diagnosis, vaginal lymphatic leakage, was established on lymphoscintigraphy. Lymphatic leakage in the vagina on lymphoscintigraphy was the key imaging feature of
