BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Advances in molecular biology have discovered new genes involved in the development of familial paraganglioma syndrome (PGL) including those encoding mitochondrial succinate dehydrogenase complex (SDH). Mesoblastic nephroma is by far the most frequent intrarenal fetal tumor. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first case of a newborn with an intrarenal neuroblastoma that was discovered prenatally. An intrarenal echogenic and homogenous mass was observed on routine prenatal ultrasonography, corroborated by magnetic resonance imaging, in a 30-week gestation fetus. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of pheochromocytoma (PHEO) in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), and to analyze the behavior of some anthropometric and cardiovascular parameters. In 48 consecutive NF1 patients, urinary metanephrines and vanillylmandelic acid excretion were assessed. Four subjects with orthostatic hypotension were given intravenous infusions of methoxamine and isoproterenol. Methoxamine caused an elevation in systolic blood pressure. One hundred twelve CT scans of 52 patients who were receiving treatment for neuroblastoma were reviewed for accuracy, and findings were correlated with data obtained from other imaging tests, physical examinations, laboratory tests, biopsies, surgery, and long-term clinical follow-up. Thirty three patients with phaeochromocytomas had surgery in St. Vincent's Hospital between 1950 and 1997. 32 patients had hypertension, 32 had palpitations and 30 had excessive sweating. All patients had at least one of these cardinal symptoms. Diagnostic tests changed over this period. In the early cases the phentolamine test was used, later diagnosis was confirmed by measurement of urinary VMA and catecholamines. IVP, CT, ultrasound or MIBG scanning were used to locate the tumours. Before 1967, 3 of 17 patients died peri-operatively, 2 of these from strokes and one from pulmonary embolism.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the frequency of etiologies of Horner syndrome in children and suggest an imaging and laboratory diagnostic protocol to evaluate for neuroblastoma and other lesions in a child presenting with Horner syndrome and no known cause.

Cardiovascular disturbances were found to be a common feature of patients with the Guillian-Barré syndrome who were severely paralysed, requiring assisted ventilation. We reviewed the neurologic and developmental courses in 10 children with opsoclonus-myoclonus ("dancing eyes syndrome") and neuroblastoma. All patients are alive without evidence of neoplastic disease after 8+ to 111+ months of follow-up. All had localized disease and 50% had extraabdominal tumors. Phaeochromocytomas are uncommon among patients with hypertension, and sometimes occur in persons without known hypertension, but are important to detect because they are often lethal but commonly curable, and because they are a clue to the presence of associated conditions.
