Sarcoma of the kidney: angiographic features.

Sarcomas of the kidney are highly malignant neoplasms. Abnormal vascularity can be detected in almost all types of sarcomas, but arteriovenous shunting, pooling of contrast material, and tumor staining are seldom present. Extension to renal vein and inferior vena cava may occur. While angiographic findings in our seven cases of renal sarcomas were nonspecific, this diagnosis should be considered in a relatively hypovascular neoplasm especially when the capsular arteries contribute considerably to the vascular supply. Nevertheless, statistically the most likely diagnosis of a hypovascular mass

Incidental littoral cell angioma of the spleen.

BACKGROUND: Littoral cell angioma (LCA) is a recently described primary vascular neoplasm of the spleen that may be associated with other malignancies and may itself also have malignant potential. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of LCA that was discovered incidentally in a 52-year-old woman who presented with biliary colic at the time of consultation for cholecystectomy. This vascular neoplasm was evaluated by ultrasound, CT, MRI, Tc-99m labelled red blood cell scintigraphy, and core biopsy. A splenectomy revealed LCA by pathological evaluation. Post-operative outcome was favourable with

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging findings in a patient with central nervous system paracoccidioidomycosis.

A 22-year-old woman presented with a 3-month history of a pulsatile swelling in the right supraclavicular region. A CT angiogram revealed an aneurysm arising from the distal right subclavian artery. At surgery, the subclavian artery was almost entirely replaced by a well-vascularized tumor mass. The vascular tumor along with the native vessel was excised and replaced with a vascular prosthesis. Biopsy was suggestive of an epithelioid hemangioma (EH). In conclusion, an EH is a rare vascular tumor. The presence of vascular hyperplasia with plump endothelial cells protruding into the lumen is the

Development of vascular neoplasia in Castleman's disease. Report of seven cases.

Seven cases of vascular neoplasia arising within lesions of hypervascular follicular hyperplasia (HFH) fulfilling the criteria of Castleman's disease are described. The patients did not have evidence of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or other immunologic disorders. The masses were solitary and located in the retroperitoneum (five cases), mediastinum (one case), and axilla (one case). Grossly, they measured up to 20 cm and had a variegated appearance. In each case two morphologically distinct processes were present: a mesenchymal spindle-cell neoplasm with evidence of vascular differentiati

Cross-Sectional Imaging Evaluation of Vascular Lesions in the Gastrointestinal Tract and Mesentery.

Gastrointestinal (GI) tract and mesenteric vascular lesions can have various clinical presentations, of which GI bleeding is the most common. This collection of pathology is highly variable in etiology ranging from occlusive disease to vascular malformations to trauma to neoplasms which makes for a challenging workup and diagnosis. The advent of multiple imaging modalities and endoscopic techniques makes the diagnosis of these lesions more achievable, and familiarity with their various imaging findings can have a significant impact on patient management. In this article, we review the gamut of

Angiokeratoma of the clitoris.

A 25-year-old woman, multigravida, presented with a dark ulcerated tumor of the clitoris. Histologic examination demonstrated an angiokeratoma, a benign telangiectatic vascular tumor. To our knowledge, this is the first report of angiokeratoma of the clitoris and only the fifth describing vascular tumor of this organ. The clinical differential diagnosis of angiokeratoma and of clitoral tumors includes malignant neoplasms such as melanoma. Biopsy with histologic examination is, therefore, recommended to ensure appropriate treatment of these unusual tumors.

Management of a Life Threatening Bleeding Following Extraction of Deciduous Second Molar Related to a Capillary Haemangioma.

Various forms of vascular lesion affect the head and neck region. The head and neck vascular lesions are classified into neoplasms and malformations. Neoplasm presents either as hemangioma or lymphangioma; neoplasm usually presents in young age compared with vascular malformation. A 9-year-old female patient presented to the outpatient clinic referred from the department of pedodontics after extraction of a right mandibular second deciduous molar. Extraction was done by dental GP in outpatient clinic. Massive bleeding followed the extraction. Bleeding was controlled by electrocoagulation of bl

[Malignant fibrohistiocytoma arising at a femoral dacron vascular prosthesis. Case report and review of the literature].

In a recent publication, reporting the sixth case of aortic angiosarcoma, probably induced by the implantation of a dacron vascular prosthesis, Weiss et al. have done a literature review concerning the association between the presence of vascular prostheses and the onset of mesenchymal neoplasms. Although they consider the incidence of this association very low, they also point out the hypothesis, largely supported by experimental studies, that vascular prostheses can play the role of aetiological co-factor or factor in the onset of these tumors. We consider useful to report a case of malignan

Membranous expression of glucose transporter-1 protein (GLUT-1) in embryonal neoplasms of the central nervous system.

The human erythrocyte GLUT-1 is a transmembrane protein which facilitates transport of glucose in the cell in an energy-independent fashion. Neuroectodermal stem cells show strong membrane immunoreactivitry with this marker at early developmental stages in rodents. Membranous expression by undifferentiated neuroectodermal cells gradually decreases while GLUT-1 becomes confined to the endothelial cells, when these acquire blood-brain barrier function. We thus sought to determine whether GLUT-1 expression was limited to embryonal neoplasms of the central nervous system (CNS) which are presumably

Carcinogenicity of saccharin.

Saccharin is carcinogenic for the urinary bladder in rats and mice, and most likely is carcinogenic in human beings. The neoplasms of the urinary bladder are malignant and invade and metastasize. Male rats are more susceptible to urinary bladder carcinogenesis than female rats. Rats exposed as fetuses develop neoplasms more readily than rats exposed as weanlings. The lesions in the urinary bladder go through the stages of hyperplasia, hyperplastic nodules, and later carcinomas. The male of the human species ingesting saccharin, as for rats, is more susceptible to carcinogenesis of the urinary

Dynamic computed tomography: intracranial applications.

Rapid sequential computed tomography of the brain after the bolus injection of contrast material provides invaluable information as to the characteristic blood flow of intracranial lesions in a noninvasive manner. Plotted dynamic curves permit accurate diagnosis of particularly difficult cases of infarcts and neoplasms. Dynamic computed tomographic (CT) scanning has become a part of the CT work-up for infarcts, which has allowed their earlier demonstration, detected as areas of hypoperfusion not clearly evident on an initial conventional CT study. Quantitative assessment of vasogenic edema and

Synchronous occurrence of littoral cell angioma and multiple primary malignancies - A rare case report.

Littoral cell angioma (LCA) is a rare primary vascular neoplasm of the spleen that originates from the endothelial littoral cell lining of the red pulp sinuses. LCA has mostly benign behavior with a few reported cases of malignancy. LCA is strongly associated with diverse immunologic and neoplastic disorders. We report a case of LCA with synchronous renal cell carcinoma, adrenal cortical adenoma and JAK2 EXON 14 mutation positive Polycythemia vera. Histologically, entire spleen showed a neoplasm with anastomosing vascular channels lined by plump round cells. Diagnosis was confirmed by the endo

The role of differential diagnosis in intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia of the sinonasal cavity mimicking angiosarcoma: A case report.

Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH), also known as Masson's tumour, is an unusual vascular lesion characterized by the proliferation of endothelial cells. The principal significance of IPEH is its clinical and radiological resemblance to angiosarcoma, resulting in a potential misdiagnosis and overtreatment. The aim of the present study is to report a rare case of IPEH of the right maxillary sinus, focusing on the radiological and histopathological features of the neoplasm and their role in the differential diagnosis with angiosarcoma. Herein we present a case of a 67-year-ol

"Update on pediatric primary liver tumors".

Liver masses are common in children, however primary malignant neoplasms are rare, representing only 1% of all pediatric cancers. Hepatocellular neoplasms are the most common primary liver malignancies and hepatoblastoma (HB) is the most frequently diagnosed. The incidence of HB, which is increasing, is approximately of 2 cases per million in the United States, followed by hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Pediatric primary liver tumors of mesenchymal origin are less common, except for benign vascular tumors (hemangiomas). Malignant mesenchymal neoplasms represent approximately 10-15% of all, th

The First Case of Composite Hemangioendothelioma in The Heart.

Composite hemangioendothelioma (CHE) is an extremely rare vascular neoplasm that is characterized by an admixture of benign, low-grade malignant, and malignant vascular components. It is usually located superficially in the dermis and subcutis of the extremities, and other sites involved include the head and neck region, oral mucosa, and viscera of the kidney and spleen. CHE has a low-grade malignant potential because it is locally aggressive. Here, we report a case of CHE in the heart in a 46-year-old man, who presented with a palpable mass arising from his right ventricle. Echocardiogram ima

Liver tumours.

Primary hepatic tumours in children represent an heterogeneous group of neoplasms. Malignant tumours are more common (60% of primary liver tumours), but account for only 1.2-5% of all paediatric neoplasms. There are two main types of malignant tumour, those of epithelial origin, hepatoblastoma (HB) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and the rarer mesenchymal tumours, e.g. rhabdomyosarcoma and undifferentiated sarcoma, (Weinberg AG, Finegold, MJ. Primary hepatic tumours of childhood. Hum Pathol 1983, 14, 512-532). Vascular tumours e.g. haemangioendotheliomas are the most common of the benign t

A thoracic benign mesenchymoma in association with hemihypertrophy.

A thoracic benign mesenchymoma was removed from an 18-year old caucasian male who also had hemihypertrophy. The very large benign mesenchymoma which was removed was found to consist of an admixture of cytologically mature vascular spaces, adipose tissue, and smooth muscle. After removal of the tumor, the patient has had no recurrence with one year of follow-up. Patients with hemihypertrophy appear to be at high risk to develop neoplasms. Malignant neoplasms of the adrenal gland, kidney, and liver are most common. It is suggested that patients with hemihypertrophy should be followed periodicall

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma: report of two cases and review of the literature.

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma is a rare, highly aggressive neoplasm of the paranasal sinuses. Approximately 40 cases of this neoplasm have been reported to date. Microscopically, this neoplasm is composed of medium-sized cohesive cells arranged in nests, ribbons, and trabeculae having hyperchromatic nuclei, often with prominent nucleoli. A high mitotic rate, tumor necrosis, and prominent vascular invasion are conspicuous features. Squamous or glandular differentiation is not observed at the light-microscopic level. It appears to be a unique, distinctive clinicopathologic process that mu

Spindle cell vulvar hemangiomatosis associated with enchondromatosis: a rare variant of Maffucci's syndrome.

Spindle cell hemangioma is a rare vascular tumor that most frequently involves the distal extremities, especially the hand. We report a case of spindle cell hemangiomatosis of the vulva in an 18-year-old woman with Maffucci's syndrome, the first report of such a case, to the best of our knowledge. The vascular lesions, present from the age of 2, were located in the right olecranon, the third left toe, and the vulva. Spindle cell hemangiomas are either benign neoplasms or hamartomatous malformations.

TRPS1 Expression Is Frequently Seen in a Subset of Cutaneous Mesenchymal Neoplasms and Tumors of Uncertain Differentiation: A Potential Diagnostic Pitfall.

Although extensively studied in cutaneous epithelial neoplasms, the TRPS1 immunoreactivity in cutaneous mesenchymal neoplasms and tumors of uncertain differentiation (CMNTUDs), such as atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX), remains largely unexplored. We assessed TRPS1 immunoreactivity in 135 CMNTUDs, comprising 46 fibrohistiocytic/fibroblastic tumors, 28 vascular tumors, 24 peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNSTs), 21 tumors of uncertain differentiation, and 16 smooth muscle tumors.
