Autonomous cortisol secretion is associated with worse arterial stiffness and vascular fibrosis in primary aldosteronism: a cross-sectional study with follow-up data.

OBJECTIVE: The presence of autonomous cortisol secretion (ACS) in patients with primary aldosteronism (PA) is common and potentially associated with poor outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between ACS and vascular remodeling in PA patients. DESIGN AND METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 436 PA patients from October 2006 to November 2019. ACS (defined as a cortisol level >1.8 μg/dL after a 1 mg dexamethasone suppression test) was detected in 23% of the PA patients. Propensity score matching (PSM) with age, sex, systolic and diastolic blood pressure was performed.

Predictive Power of Pulmonary Artery Stiffness-Right Ventricular Interplay, But Not Pulmonary Vascular Resistance, in Mild Pulmonary Hypertension: A PVRI GoDeep Meta-Registry Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary vascular diseases are characterized by mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP) and pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR), both reflecting the steady-flow component of right ventricular (RV) afterload while neglecting pulsatile elements. Pulmonary artery compliance (PAC) and arterial elastance (Ea) capture complementary aspects of pulmonary vascular load, whereas stroke volume index (SVI) reflects RV functional adaptation. The prognostic significance of these integrated parameters remains incompletely understood, particularly in early-stage disease. RESEARCH QUESTION: Do PAC,

Arterial Stiffness and Anti-NR2/GluN2 Autoantibodies to N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptors as Markers of Vascular Aging and Cognitive Impairment in Arterial Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Arterial hypertension (HTN) is associated with accelerated vascular aging, cerebral microvascular injury, and cognitive decline. Anti-NR2/GluN2 (NR2) antibodies may be related to N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR)-mediated neuronal-ischemic injury, although their clinical significance in HTN requires further clarification. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate cross-sectional associations between arterial stiffness assessed by the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI), serum NR2 antibody levels, and cognitive performance assessed by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (Mo

Connections between serum Trimethylamine N-Oxide (TMAO), a gut-derived metabolite, and vascular biomarkers evaluating arterial stiffness and subclinical atherosclerosis in children with obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood obesity leads to early subclinical atherosclerosis and arterial stiffness. Studying biomarkers like trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), linked to cardio-metabolic disorders in adults, is crucial to prevent long-term cardiovascular issues. METHODS: The study involved 70 children aged 4 to 18 (50 obese, 20 normal-weight). Clinical examination included BMI, waist measurements, puberty stage, the presence of acanthosis nigricans, and irregular menstrual cycles. Subclinical atherosclerosis was assessed by measuring the carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), and the arterial stif

Arterial stiffness and 24 h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in young healthy volunteers: the early vascular ageing Aristotle University Thessaloniki Study (EVA-ARIS Study).

Differences in 24 h blood pressure (BP) monitoring parameters such as average 24 h BP, day to night BP ratio and BP variability could have an impact in arterial stiffness. The study hypothesis was that despite similar average BP values in ambulatory blood pressure monitoring subjects with increased 24 h BP variability may have increased arterial stiffness. The study population consisted of 115 consecutive young healthy volunteers. Carotid-femoral PWV was measured in all subjects. Clinic BP was measured and an appropriate cuff was fitted on the non-dominant arm of each subject for a 24 h ambula

Night-to-Day Ratio Specified by 24-hour Blood Pressure Monitoring, Arterial Stiffness and Cardio-Ankle Vascular Index as Predictive Factors of Cardiovascular Risk.

This study compares the interrelationships among different methods of determining predictive factors of cardiovascular risk: the Night-to-Day ratio (ND-R), Ambulatory Arterial Stiffness Index (AASI), Cardio-Ankle Vascular Index (CAVI), and Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI). A total of 8120 blood pressure measurements were obtained from 280 24h-ABPM records (29 values per daily record) of 20 patients who each provided two 7-day/24-hour monitoring sessions. For each of the two 7-day-24h-ABPM records, the ND-R and AASI were determined. CAVI and ABI were always examined at the beginning of each 7-day-24h

Arterial stiffness in patients after Kawasaki disease without coronary artery involvement: Assessment by performing brachial ankle pulse wave velocity and cardio-ankle vascular index.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear whether systemic arterial beds other than the coronary arteries are truly healthy in patients without coronary artery lesions (CAL) after Kawasaki disease (KD). We tested the hypothesis that patients with KD without echocardiographic evidence of CAL during the acute phase of the disease have abnormal mechanical properties in systemic arteries later. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied 201 consecutive patients with KD (age 2-23 years, mean 10±4 years; 109 male, 92 female) without CAL during the acute phase. Data were compared with those in 129 control subjects (age 2

Abnormal peripheral circulation in type 2 diabetic patients with normal ankle-brachial index associates with coronary atherosclerosis, large artery stiffness, and peripheral vascular resistance.

We tested the hypothesis that impaired peripheral circulation in diabetes arises from different aspects of vascular abnormalities even when accompanied by a normal ankle-brachial index (ABI>0.9). One hundred fourteen type 2 diabetic patients with normal ABI and 33 age-matched non-diabetic subjects consecutively admitted to our hospital were enrolled. The Agatston coronary artery calcium score (CACS), as a marker of coronary atherosclerosis, was obtained using electron-beam computed tomography. An automatic device was used to measure brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) as an index of art

L-citrulline as a nitric oxide-modulating therapeutic adjunct to exercise: effects on vascular function, arterial stiffness, and cardiometabolic health in postmenopausal and older women.

Postmenopausal women face increased risks of vascular dysfunction, loss of lean muscle mass, and reduced physical performance due to age-related hormonal and metabolic changes. These factors contribute to heightened cardiovascular risk and physical frailty. L-citrulline, a non-essential amino acid and precursor to nitric oxide (NO), has emerged as a potential therapeutic agent for improving vascular and muscular health. When combined with structured exercise, L-citrulline may enhance NO bioavailability, improve endothelial function, increase muscle perfusion, and potentiate exercise-induced ad

Association between the Serum Soluble Urokinase Plasminogen Activator Receptor and Peripheral Arterial Stiffness According to the Cardio-Ankle Vascular Index in Patients Undergoing Kidney Transplantation.

BACKGROUND: High soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) levels are correlated with cardiovascular (CV) disease. Arterial stiffness is associated with aging-related vascular diseases and is an independent risk factor for CV morbidity and mortality. It can be measured by the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI). We evaluated the association between serum suPAR levels and arterial stiffness according to the CAVI in kidney transplantation (KT) recipients. METHODS: In this study, 82 patients undergoing KT were enrolled. Serum suPAR levels were analyzed using an enzyme immunoassay.

Assessment of vascular stiffness in the internal carotid artery proximal to the carotid canal in Alzheimer's disease using pulse wave velocity from low rank reconstructed 4D flow MRI.

Clinical evidence shows vascular factors may co-occur and complicate the expression of Alzheimer's disease (AD); yet, the pathologic mechanisms and involvement of different compartments of the vascular network are not well understood. Diseases such as arteriosclerosis diminish vascular compliance and will lead to arterial stiffness, a well-established risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity. Arterial stiffness can be assessed using pulse wave velocity (PWV); however, this is usually done from carotid-to-femoral artery ratios. To probe the brain vasculature, intracranial PWV measures would be

Arterial stiffness, as monitored by cardio-ankle vascular index, is affected by obstructive sleep apnea, blood glucose control, and body weight - a case with 8 years follow up.

The cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) is an indicator of arterial stiffness from the heart to the ankles. The CAVI increases as arteriosclerosis progresses, but it can be decreased by appropriate treatment. There are several risk factors for coronary artery disease, however, the degree of stress caused by each separate risk factor to arteries cannot be assessed. CAVI increases with age and according to the severity of atherosclerosis. We found that CAVI also changes in response to the control of risk factors, which may be associated with the functional stiffness of arteries. CAVI can be a use
