Life-threatening cervical complications associated with infectious mononucleosis are rare. The combination of acute epiglottitis and subsequent necrotizing fasciitis of the head and neck in a patient with infectious mononucleosis has not been reported to date.A 47-year-old female with infectious mononucleosis and epiglottitis was admitted to hospital for i.v. therapy. Owing to her poor clinical condition and the spread of the infection to the throat and superior mediastinum, as evidenced by CT, a cervical debridement was performed. After cervical debridement, histological findings were consist

The generation of nitrite by the oral microbiota is believed to contribute to healthy cardiovascular function, with oral nitrate reduction to nitrite associated with systemic blood pressure regulation. There is the potential to manipulate the composition or activities of the oral microbiota to a higher nitrate-reducing state through nitrate supplementation. The current study examined microbial community composition and enzymatic responses to nitrate supplementation in sessile oral microbiota grown in continuous culture. Nitrate reductase (NaR) activity and nitrite concentrations were not signi

Around 155 million people worldwide suffer from asthma. In Chile, the prevalence of this disease in children is around 15% and has a high impact in the health system. Studies suggest that asthma is caused by multiple factors, including host genetics, antibiotic use, and the development of the airway microbiota. Here, we used 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing to characterize the nasal and oral mucosae of 63 asthmatic and 89 healthy children (152 samples) from Santiago, Chile. We found that the nasal mucosa was dominated by a high abundance of Moraxella, Dolosigranulum, Haemophilus, Corynebact

Smokeless tobacco (SLT) is certainly one of the major risk factors associated with oral cancer. Disruption of oral microbiota-host homeostasis contributes to the progression of oral cancer. Here, we profiled SLT users' oral bacterial composition and inferred their functions by sequencing 16S rDNA V3-V4 region and PICRUSt2, respectively. Oral bacteriome of SLT users (with or without oral premalignant lesions), SLT with alcohol co-users, and non-SLT consumers were compared. Oral bacteriome is shaped primarily by SLT use and the incidence of oral premalignant lesions (OPL). A significantly increa

Autoimmune gastritis (AIG) in its advanced atrophic stage is characterized by reduced acid secretion, dysbiosis, and gastric cancer (GC) risk. Swallowed oral bacteria surviving in increased intragastric pH may play a carcinogenic role. Oral microbiota was linked to increased GC risk. In AIG, the concomitant assessment of oral and gastric microbiota has not yet been performed. This study aimed to investigate the oral and gastric microbiota in AIG patients to clarify the role of oral bacteria in gastric dysbiosis. A case-control study on n = 20 histologically diagnosed AIG patients and n = 20 co

BACKGROUND: Oral microbiota is a major etiological factor in the development of dental caries. Next-generation sequencing techniques have been widely used, generating vast amounts of data which is underexplored. The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies has made it possible to mine information from these large datasets. This study aimed to develop AI-driven diagnostic models and identify key microbial features for caries.
METHODS: We collected raw metagenomic and full-length 16 S rRNA gene sequencing data from previous studies on saliva and plaque to construct a caries AI t

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated nonacquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and dementia are more prevalent in older than in young adult HIV-infected subjects. Although the oral microbiome has been studied as a window into pathogenesis in aging populations, its relationship to HIV disease progression, opportunistic infections, and HIV-associated non-AIDS conditions is not well understood. We utilized 16S rDNA-based pyrosequencing to compare the salivary microbiome in three groups: (1) Chronically HIV-infected wo

Oral dysbiosis contributes to Alzheimer's disease (AD) by promoting neuroinflammation. Pathobionts such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, and Fusobacterium nucleatum release virulence factors that induce amyloid beta aggregation and tau hyperphosphorylation, while the loss of commensals like Streptococcus salivarius and Neisseria spp. impairs anti-inflammatory protection, worsening neuronal damage. P. gingivalis is strongly linked to an increased risk of AD, especially in individuals with systemic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease. Its presence

BACKGROUND: Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are a cornerstone of therapy for selected phenotypes of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), yet the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Increasing evidence suggests that airway microbiome and their metabolites play crucial roles in shaping host immune responses and disease progression.
OBJECTIVE: This study used multi-omics technology to explore the differences in sputum microbiome, metabolites and the systematic connections in patients with stable COPD who use or not ICS.
METHODS: We performed an integrated microbiome-met

The human breast milk (HBM) bacteriome is an important, continuous source of microbes to the neonate in early life, playing an important role in shaping the infant's intestinal bacteriome. Study of the composition of the HBM bacteriome is an emerging area of research, with little information available, particularly from low- and middle-income countries. The aim of this study was to characterize the diversity of bacterial communities in HBM samples collected between 6-10 weeks postpartum from lactating South African women and to study potential influencing factors of the bacteriome. Using 16S r

A 28-year-old woman experienced hypotension and unresponsiveness. She had undergone bronchoscopy with needle biopsy 2 weeks before admission to evaluate hilar lymphadenopathy given suspicion of sarcoidosis. She had an elevated white blood cell count of 28,000/μL and a serum creatinine level of 4.0 mg/dL. Echocardiography showed a large pericardial effusion. Pericardiocentesis resulted in removal of 400 mL of yellow-green purulent material that grew Streptococcus milleri, Prevotella, Veillonella, and Peptostreptococcus species. Pericardiectomy and mediastinal washout were performed. Subsequentl

The microbial ecology of adherent plaque was investigated in relation to the pathological findings of gingivitis in plaque-susceptible rats. Plaque developed in the gingiva of the lower incisor in plaque-susceptible rats, but not in plaque-resistant rats, after they were fed a commercial powder diet. With increase in plaque volume, the total counts of bacteria increased 10(9) to 10(11)/g. In the first 3 months, Bacteroides species increased and became the predominant population. Streptococcus species also increased at the same time. After 9 months, Fusobacterium species and oral Treponema spec

The bacterial findings of 73 maxillary sinuses in 48 patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis, together with 7 non-inflamed sinuses, are reported. Employing an intraoperative technique and simultaneous collection of 3 different types of specimens in the present investigation made possible comparison of their bacterial characteristics. The results indicated that intraoperative culture of antral mucosa seems to provide the most reliable finding of bacterial flora in chronic maxillary sinusitis. The anaerobic bacteria were never found in the mucosal culture of non-inflamed sinus. The anaerobes a
