A meta-analysis of NIBS studies on verbal fluency.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) has emerged as a promising tool to modulate neural circuits involved in language production, yet the magnitude and variability of its effects on VF remain to be systematically evaluated. This meta-analysis aimed to quantify the effects of various NIBS techniques on VF performance and to examine the moderating roles of stimulation parameters, target regions, task domains, population characteristics, and language. METHODS: From 1,667 records, 38 studies comprising 91 experimental comparisons met inclusion criteria. Data were extracted on stimula

The role of verbal threat information in the development of childhood fear. "Beware the Jabberwock!".

Rachman's (Behaviour Research and Therapy 15:372-387, 1977; Clinical Psychology Review 11:155-173, 1991) three pathways theory proposed that childhood fears not only arise as a consequence of direct learning experiences, but can also be elicited by means of threat information transmission. This review looks at the scientific evidence for this idea, which has accumulated during the past three decades. We review research on the influences of media exposure on children's fears, retrospective parent and child reports on the role of threat information in fear acquisition, and experimental studies t

Interpersonal Hostility Assessment Technique: description and validation against the criterion of coronary artery disease.

High levels of hostility are associated with adverse health outcomes. The Interpersonal Hostility Assessment Technique (IHAT; Barefoot, 1992) measures hostility from verbal behavior during a standardized interview. Four types of behaviors are scored as hostility: evading the question, irritation, and indirect and direct challenges to the interviewer. The sum of the frequencies of these acts is a Hostile Behavior Index (HBI), which is divided into two components: verbal, scored with speech content in mind, and paraverbal, based on vocal stylistics. This study examined characteristics of IHAT as

Performance costs when emotion tunes inappropriate cognitive abilities: implications for mental resources and behavior.

Emotion tunes cognition, such that approach-motivated positive states promote verbal cognition, whereas withdrawal-motivated negative states promote spatial cognition (Gray, 2001). The current research examined whether self-control resources become depleted and influence subsequent behavior when emotion tunes an inappropriate cognitive tendency. In 2 experiments, either an approach-motivated positive state or a withdrawal-motivated negative state was induced, and then participants completed a verbal or a spatial working memory task creating conditions of emotion-cognition alignment (e.g., appr

The Influence of Socioeconomic Status on Adolescent Aggressive Behavior: The Mediating Roles of Normative Beliefs About Aggression and Aggressive Affect.

Adolescence is a period in which the frequency of aggressive behavior increases. However, the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and different types of aggression remains unclear. This study explored this relationship among middle school students. It also examined the mediating mechanisms of aggressive cognition and affect, while investigating the gender differences in the relationships among the study variables. A total of 1891 middle school students from Southwest China completed the SES scale, the normative beliefs about aggression questionnaire, the relational aggression behav

Culturally sensitive integration of supportive and cognitive behavioral therapy in the treatment of a bicultural dysthymic patient.

A single case study is presented of the successful integration of culturally sensitive supportive and cognitive behavioral therapy to meet the needs of a bicultural man (Mexican/Palestinian) with dysthymia. The patient, a 3rd-year law student, was chronically making self-depreciating negative verbalizations that disrupted his daily functioning. The outcome revealed that the therapeutic alliance was improved by having a therapist of color who was sensitive to cultural issues and acculturation. Supportive therapy, coupled with cognitive behavioral interventions, succeeded in extinguishing the pa

Coprophenomena in Tourette syndrome.

The aims of this descriptive study were to examine the prevalence and associations of coprophenomena (involuntary expression of socially unacceptable words or gestures) in individuals with Tourette syndrome. Participant data were obtained from the Tourette Syndrome International Database Consortium. A specialized data collection form was completed for each of a subset of 597 consecutive new patients with Tourette syndrome from 15 sites in seven countries. Coprolalia occurred at some point in the lifetime of 19.3% of males and 14.6% of females, and copropraxia in 5.9% of males and 4.9% of femal

Representational demands in mothers' talk to preschool children in two contexts: picture book reading and a modelling task.

Shared book reading is considered to be an influential factor in language and literacy development and has been associated with more complex and demanding forms of tutorial language use. The present study seeks to examine mothers' discourse in joint picture book reading in terms of the level of representational demand which it places on the child, that is the extent to which it requires the child to engage in abstract thought. This was compared with the language used in another interactive, but more product oriented task, modelling a clown using play-doh. Twenty-four mother child dyads (in whi

Self-management of disruptive verbal ruminations by a mentally retarded adult.

Chronic and high-rate disruptive verbal ruminations of a mentally retarded adult in a vocational training setting were successfully reduced following introduction of a multi-component, self-management intervention program. Self-management skills of self-monitoring, self-evaluation, self-consequation, and self-instruction were trained and then practiced in vivo. In addition to influencing the specific dependent disruptive rumination behaviors targeted for intervention, three collateral behaviors not specifically treated showed positive effects. A combined treatment withdrawal and modified chang

Aggression among psychiatric inpatients in Greece.

We studied, during 5 consecutive days, the prevalence, types and demographic, historical and clinical correlates of overt aggression in a population of 136 acute and chronic inpatients with mainly a diagnosis of psychotic disorder. Almost one fourth of them exhibited some sort of aggressive behavior. Verbal aggression was by far the most frequent type followed-in decreasing order-by physical aggression, aggression against property and self-aggression. Past threats of violence and attacks on others as well as concurrent motor excitement, agitation, low tolerance of frustration, difficulty in de

Gender stereotype-consistent memories: How system justification motivation distorts the recollection of information related to the self.

Research based on system justification theory has shown that women's self-perceptions may be altered by the motivation to justify the system and its inequalities. Self-perceptions being built on past experiences, the present study aimed to explore how system justification motivation induced through a system dependency manipulation may alter both women's recall of autobiographical memories and their behavior. Women who were led to feel highly dependent on the social system perceived themselves as more competent and recalled memories of higher competence in the verbal domain compared with the ne

The response of agitated behavior to pain management in persons with dementia.

OBJECTIVES: Behavioral disturbances and pain are common in nursing home (NH) patients with dementia. An association between pain and increased agitation has been suggested, and recently a significant reduction of agitation has been demonstrated by pain treatment in patients with moderate to severe dementia. We now examined which specific agitated behaviors respond to individualized pain treatment. DESIGN: Cluster randomized clinical trial. SETTING: 60 clusters (i.e., clusters defined as single independent NH units) in 18 NHs within five municipalities of Western Norway. PARTICIPANTS: 352 pa

[School maladjustment common among children with very low birth weight Special attention and support are required during school start].

Children of very low birth weight (VLBW), defined as less than 1500 g, and normal birth weight controls (NBW) were enrolled in a long-term follow-up study. Five of 86 surviving VLBW children had a neurological handicap. Seventy VLBW children and 72 NBW children were re-examined at the age of nine, which entailed a neurological examination, a non-verbal intelligence test and a test for reading ability, mathematical skills and vocabulary. Their behavior was rated regarding hyperactivity, social behavior and fine and motor skills. The two groups differed with regard to the neurological examinatio

Correlates of agitation and depression in nursing home residents with dementia.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between dementia severity, age, gender, and prescription of psychotropics, and syndromes of agitation and depression in a sample of nursing home residents with dementia. METHODS: The Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory (CMAI) was administered to residents with dementia (N = 304) of 18 nursing homes. Agitation symptoms were clustered using factorial analysis. Depression was estimated using the Dementia Mood Assessment Scale (DMAS). Dementia severity was assessed categorically using predefined cut-off scores derived from

The Predictive Value of Criminogenic Needs on Institutional Misconduct in a Dutch Forensic Hospital.

According to the Risk-Need-Responsivity model, criminogenic needs are important in predicting violent behavior. Eight criminogenic needs are considered strong predictors: history of antisocial behavior, antisocial personality traits, criminal attitudes, criminal associates, substance abuse, family problems, poor work performance, and lack of involvement in prosocial leisure/recreation activities. The purpose of the current study was to examine whether seven criminogenic needs predict institutional misconduct in the first year of admission of Dutch patients who were admitted to a forensic hospi
