Asymmetry Matters: Diffusion Tensor Tractography of the Uncinate Fasciculus in Children with Verbal Memory Deficits.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Verbal declarative memory performance relies on frontotemporal connectivity. The uncinate fasciculus is a major association tract connecting the frontal and temporal lobes. Hemispheric asymmetries contribute to various cognitive and neurobehavioral abilities. Here we investigated microstructural alterations and hemispheric asymmetry of the uncinate fasciculus and their possible correlation to memory performance of children with learning disorders attributed to verbal memory deficits. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two groups of right-handed children with learning disorders att

Longitudinal study of cognition among adolescent marijuana users over three weeks of abstinence.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive deficits that persist up to a month have been detected among adult marijuana users, but decrements and their pattern of recovery are less known in adolescent users. Previously, we reported cognitive deficits among adolescent marijuana users after one month of abstinence (Medina, Hanson, Schweinsburg, Cohen-Zion, Nagel, & Tapert, 2007). In this longitudinal study, we characterized neurocognitive changes among marijuana-using adolescents across the first three weeks of abstinence. METHOD: Participants were adolescent marijuana users with limited alcohol and other drug use

Impairment of eyeblink classical conditioning in progressive supranuclear palsy.

In a previous study we showed that learning in eyeblink classical conditioning (EBCC) is normal in Parkinson's disease (PD) and that the serial reaction time task (SRTT) is only marginally impaired. Since pathological lesions are more widespread in the atypical parkinsonian disorder of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) than in PD, we hypothesized that PSP patients may show more profound deficits in the EBCC and SRTT learning tasks. We therefore investigated EBCC with a delay and two trace paradigms, an SRTT and the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) in eight patients with PSP and an age

[Memory changes in Parkinson's disease. Relation with clinical variables].

We studied verbal and visual short term memory, learning capabilities and long term retention in a sample of 96 patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) and 42 controls matched by sex, age, years of education and verbal intelligence. We found significant differences between groups in visual short term memory and verbal learning, but not in verbal short term memory and long term retention. Performance in visual short term memory and learning correlated with the severity of disease and motor performance. Forty-one per cent of patients had impairment in visual short term memory, and this impairment

The relationship between learning disability, intelligence, and paired-associate learning.

Learning disabled (N = 45) and non-learning disabled (N = 39) third and fourth grade boys and girls were compared in four paired-associate situations. The situations respectively measured learning, memory, exemplar learning, and transfer. Intelligence was measured with the WISC-R. The data were nonnormal in distribution, and the results were thus analyzed parametrically for intelligence and group. What appears to be an interaction occurred. Intelligence facilitated performance for normals on the memory task but had a deleterious effect for the learning disabled Ss. The learning disabled high i

Characteristics of non-verbal memory impairment in bipolar disorder: the role of encoding strategies.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that individuals with bipolar disorder exhibit neuropsychological impairments not only during episodes of depression or mania but also when they are euthymic. One of the most consistently reported cognitive problems in euthymic individuals with bipolar disorder is impairment in episodic memory. Learning and memory depend on individuals' ability to organize information during learning. A recent study by our group showed that verbal episodic memory impairments in euthymic patients with bipolar I disorder (BP-I) are mediated by difficulties in organizing verbal infor

Amnesia and the organization of the hippocampal system.

Early hippocampal injury in humans has been found to result in a limited form of global anterograde amnesia. At issue is whether the limitation is qualitative, with the amnesia reflecting substantially greater impairment in episodic than in semantic memory, or only quantitative, with both episodic and semantic memory being partially and equivalently impaired. Evidence from neuroanatomical and lesion studies in animals suggests that the hippocampus and subhippocampal cortices form a hierarchically organized system, such that the greatest convergence of information (and, by implication, the rich

The role of the intracarotid amobarbital procedure in predicting verbal memory decline after temporal lobe resection.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the utility of baseline neuropsychological measures and scores from the intracarotid amobarbital procedure (IAP) in the prediction of postoperative memory decline in temporal lobe epilepsy surgery patients. METHODS: Logistic regression analyses were used to determine the relation between demographic variables, baseline neuropsychological scores, and scores from the IAP (using mixed verbal and nonverbal stimuli) and postoperative deterioration in verbal learning and verbal recall in 91 patients (48 right, RTL; 43 left, LTL) who had undergone a stan

Process models of verbal memory in cancer survivors: Bayesian process modeling approach to variation in test scores.

INTRODUCTION: Verbal memory is a complex and fundamental aspect of human cognition. However, traditional sum-score analyses of verbal learning tests oversimplify underlying verbal memory processes. We propose using process models to subdivide memory into multiple processes, which helps in localizing the most affected processes in impaired verbal memory. Additionally, the model can be used to address score and process variability. This study aims to investigate the effects of cancer and its treatment on verbal memory, as well as provide a demonstration of how process models can be used to inves

Larry Jacoby: An appreciation of his early research.

Larry Jacoby was one of the most creative experimental psychologists of his generation. I describe four papers from early in his career that were influential to debates at the time and that are still well worth reading today. These are Jacoby and Bartz (Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 11[4], 561-565, 1972), Jacoby ((Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 17[6], 649-667, 1978), Jacoby and Dallas (Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 110[3], 306-340, 1981), and Jacoby (Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 22[5], 485-508, 1983). The last two papers show

Assessment of learning and memory impairments in adults with predominately inattentive versus combined presentation attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

This cross-sectional study compared adults diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder-Inattentive (ADHD-I) and ADHD-Combined (ADHD-C) presentations with a non-ADHD group on verbal and visual learning and delayed recall using the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) and Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-Revised (BVMT-R), respectively. Data from 380 predominately college student adult outpatients were used, with 155 who met criteria for ADHD-I, 165 who met criteria for ADHD-C, and 60 who did not meet criteria for ADHD but were diagnosed with a primary depressive or anxiety disorde

"Really, he dased the doll to the girl?" Two-year-olds can exploit grammatical and thematic content to learn novel verb meanings.

Infants exploit the syntactic context verbs appear in to guide verb learning: a mechanism known as syntactic bootstrapping. However, it remains unclear whether infants' bootstrapping representations are achieved by matching the number of nouns in a sentence to the number of participants in an event, or by exploiting a more specific mapping between syntactic positions and thematic roles. To investigate this, we tested toddlers' ability to learn the meaning of a novel verb by relying on sentences' grammatical and thematic content, signaled by functional words connecting two noun phrases. Word Learning With Orthographic Support in Nonspeaking and Minimally Speaking School-Age Autistic Children.

PURPOSE: Previous research has demonstrated that typically developing children, verbal children with a diagnosis of autism, children with Down syndrome, children with developmental language disorder, and children with dyslexia can all benefit from orthographic support during word learning tasks. This study sought to determine if minimally speaking or nonspeaking children with a diagnosis of autism would also demonstrate an orthographic facilitation effect during a computer-based remote word learning task. METHOD: Twenty-two school-age children with a diagnosis of autism and little to no spoke

Stimulating parietal regions of the multiple-demand cortex impairs novel vocabulary learning.

Neuroimaging research demonstrated that the early stages of learning engage domain-general networks, non-specialist brain regions that process a wide variety of cognitive tasks. Those networks gradually disengage as learning progresses and learned information becomes processed in brain networks specialised for the specific function (e.g., language). In the current study, we used repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in the form of continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) to test whether stimulation of the bilateral parietal region of the domain-general network impairs learning n

Reflections on foreign language study for students with language learning problems: research, issues and challenges.

The study of foreign language (FL) learning for individuals who have found learning to read and write in their first language extremely problematic has been an under-researched area throughout the world. Since the 1980s, Leonore Ganschow and Richard Sparks have conducted pioneering research into the nature of difficulties, why they are encountered and how they can be minimized. In this paper the authors trace the development of their research on foreign language difficulties for students with language learning problems. They provide a summary of their findings and suggest new questions and dir

Evaluating the task-specificity model of verbal memory: Regional volumetric analyses in temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Verbal memory tasks differ in their cognitive demands and may rely on distinct left medial temporal structures. One model holds that verbal delayed recall is hippocampal dependent, whereas verbal paired associate learning relies on adjacent rhinal cortex. We test this by examining the relationship between task performance and regional temporal lobe volumes in individuals with temporal lobe epilepsy and hippocampal sclerosis (TLE-HS). METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 99 surgically naïve TLE patients (12 bilateral TLE-HS, 35 left TLE-HS, 28 right TLE-HS, and 24 MRI-negative left TL

Representations of Nonlocal Syntactic Dependencies Feed Verb Learning in Infancy.

The ability to represent both local and nonlocal syntactic dependencies emerges in an infant's second year of life, raising questions about how these early syntactic representations interact with language learning in other domains. Using wh-questions as our case study, we investigate how infants' syntactic dependency acquisition interacts with their early lexical development. Prior work finds that 18-month-olds represent fronted wh-phrases as nonlocal arguments in object wh-questions with known verbs. Here, we show that 19-21-month-olds (range: 18;29-21;26) do the same when interpreting unknow

Reduced Implicit but not Explicit Knowledge of Cross-Situational Statistical Learning in Developmental Dyslexia.

Although statistical learning (SL) has been studied extensively in developmental dyslexia (DD), less attention has been paid to other fundamental challenges in language acquisition, such as cross-situational word learning. Such investigation is important for determining whether and how SL processes are affected in DD at the word level. In this study, typically developed (TD) adults and young adults with DD were exposed to a set of trials that contained multiple spoken words and multiple pictures of individual objects, with no information about word-referent correspondences provided within a tr

Is that a pibu or a pibo? Children with reading and language deficits show difficulties in learning and overnight consolidation of phonologically similar pseudowords.

Word learning is critical for the development of reading and language comprehension skills. Although previous studies have indicated that word learning is compromised in children with reading disability (RD) or developmental language disorder (DLD), it is less clear how word learning difficulties manifest in children with comorbid RD and DLD. Furthermore, it is unclear whether word learning deficits in RD or DLD include difficulties with offline consolidation of newly learned words. In the current study, we employed an artificial lexicon learning paradigm with an overnight design to investigat

Discourse-based intervention for word finding in children.

UNLABELLED: A discourse-based, contextual intervention approach for increasing children's word finding proficiency was evaluated. The clinician's role was to (a) identify overt word finding behaviors as they occurred, (2) allow their completion, and (c) provide appropriate feedback, including requests for associative information, requests for clarification, comments to confirm the appropriateness of word choices, and comments to facilitate discourse restructuring. Subjects were three 9-year-old boys with diagnosed language-learning disabilities (LLD) characterized by word finding problems. Int
