Use of Veterans Health Administration Homeless Programs Among Transgender and Non-Transgender Veterans Experiencing Self-Reported Housing Instability.

INTRODUCTION: Transgender individuals have higher rates of housing instability than non-transgender individuals. This study assessed the extent to which unstably housed transgender veterans participated in Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Homeless Programs. METHODS: Using VHA medical record data for transgender (n=491) and nontransgender (n=473) veterans who self-reported housing instability during fiscal years 2013-2016, chi-square and t-tests identified differences in socio-demographic characteristics and services use; multiple logistic and negative binomial regression assessed the type

Prevalence and multi-morbid correlates of homelessness among veterans with HIV infection nationally in the veterans health administration.

This study sought to evaluate the risk of homelessness among HIV positive users of Veterans Health Administration (VHA) services. National VHA administrative data from Fiscal Year (FY) 2012 (N = 5.4 million) were used to: (1) evaluate the unadjusted risk of homelessness among veterans with HIV; (2) identify common multi-morbid correlates of both HIV diagnosis and homelessness; and (3) to assess the independent risk of homelessness among veterans with HIV after adjusting for risk factors common to both conditions. Veterans with HIV were at substantial risk of homelessness (OR = 4.23 (95% CI 4.0

Accelerated DNA Methylation Aging in U.S. Military Veterans: Results From the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify how a broad range of sociodemographic, military, health, and psychosocial factors relate to accelerated DNA methylation aging (Δage) in a large, contemporary, nationally representative sample of male U.S. veterans. METHODS: Data were analyzed from a sample of U.S. male European-American veterans who participated in the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study (N = 1,135). RESULTS: Psychosocial factors of lifetime trauma burden, child sexual trauma, and negative beliefs about aging were independently associated with Δage. Three health v

Medical utilization and cost outcomes for poststroke veterans who receive assistive technology devices from the Veterans Health Administration.

The study objectives were to (1) advance understanding of the relationship between provision of assistive technology devices (ATDs) and healthcare consumption and outcomes in a system that does not limit provision of ATDs to in-home use and (2) determine how the provision of ATDs relates to inpatient/outpatient utilization and costs of services for veterans 12 months poststroke when controlling for case-mix. This was a retrospective study using Department of Veterans Affairs administrative/workload databases to identify 12,046 veterans with stroke during fiscal years 2001 and 2002. Measures we

The Australian Vietnam Veterans Health Study: III. psychological health of Australian Vietnam veterans and its relationship to combat.

BACKGROUND: Self-reported psychiatric status of Australian Vietnam war veterans was determined 20-25 years after the war and its relation to combat was investigated. METHOD: A simple random sample of Australian Army Vietnam veterans was interviewed nationally using standardized interviews and self-completion tests to assess the prevalence of lifetime and current psychiatric illness and its relationship to combat. Army records were used to extract data on the cohort for use in regression-based adjustment for non-response. RESULTS: The conditions mainly affecting the Australian veterans were a

Military and occupational exposures among Veterans in the Million Veteran Program by survey self-report: a descriptive study.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to characterise self-reported military and occupational exposures including Agent Orange, chemical/biological warfare agents, solvents, fuels, pesticides, metals and burn pits among Veterans in the Department of Veterans Affairs Million Veteran Program (MVP). METHODS: MVP is an ongoing longitudinal cohort and mega-biobank of over one million US Veterans. Over 500 000 MVP participants reported military exposures on the baseline survey, and over 300 000 reported occupational exposures on the lifestyle survey. We determined frequencies of selected self-reported occupational e

Prevalence of Stranger Harassment of Women Veterans at Veterans Affairs Medical Centers and Impacts on Delayed and Missed Care.

BACKGROUND: Harassment of servicewomen during military service has been well-documented, but harassment of women veterans in Veterans Affairs (VA) health care settings has not been studied systematically. We assessed the prevalence and impacts of harassment among women veterans who use VA health care. METHODS: From January to March 2015, we conducted computer-assisted telephone interviews of randomly sampled women veterans with three or more primary care and/or women's health visits at 1 of 12 VA medical centers. We asked if patients had experienced inappropriate/unwanted comments or behavior

Caring Letters and Suicide Mortality Among US Veterans Who Contacted the Veterans Crisis Line: A Prespecified Secondary Analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Caring letters (CL) is one of the only suicide prevention interventions to ever reduce suicide mortality in a randomized clinical trial, but the results have not been replicated. The US Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Crisis Line (VCL) CL intervention was previously evaluated, but suicide mortality data were not available at that time. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association of the VCL CL intervention with suicide mortality among US veterans, and to determine whether there are differences in outcomes by signatory. Comparing Suicide Rates Across Subpopulations of Veterans Receiving Veterans Health Administration Care, 2017-2021: The Suicide Risk Encyclopedia.

This study presents suicide surveillance findings from the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Suicide Risk Encyclopedia, a novel population-based suicide rate comparison tool, demonstrating which Veteran VHA patient subpopulations experience the most elevated suicide rates. For cohorts of Veteran VHA patients alive as of the last day of 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 and with VHA encounters in the prior 2 years, we assessed subpopulation size, number of suicide deaths in the subsequent calendar year, and the suicide rate for 482 measures of Veteran characteristics, diagnoses, and services

Sex-specific associations between homelessness and cerebrovascular disease among aging US veterans in the Veterans Affairs healthcare system.

Homelessness and chronic disease have been previously linked. We examined the bidirectional, sex-specific, relationship between homelessness and cerebrovascular disease among aging veterans seeking U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare services. A retrospective study was conducted among a cohort of 4,061,031 veterans (mean [± standard deviation] age: 68.7 [± 10.3] years; 94.6% men) followed between 2017 and 2021 and defined through linkage of VA Corporate Data Warehouse, Homeless Operations Management System, and Mortality Data Repository databases. Psychological Resilience in U.S. Military Veterans: Results from the 2019-2020 National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study.

Following exposure to traumatic life events, most individuals are psychologically resilient, and experience minimal-to-no symptoms of posttraumatic stress, major depressive, or generalized anxiety disorders. To date, however, most research has focused on factors associated with adverse post-trauma mental health outcomes rather than understanding those associated with psychological resilience. In particular, little is known about factors associated with psychological resilience in veterans, despite their high rates of trauma exposure, such as combat and military sexual trauma. To address this g

Risk and protective factors associated with mental health among female military veterans: results from the veterans' health study.

BACKGROUND: This study focuses on factors that may disproportionately affect female veterans' mental health, compared to men, and is part of a larger study assessing the prevalence of mental health disorders and treatment seeking among formerly deployed US military service members. METHODS: We surveyed a random sample of 1,730 veterans who were patients in a large non-VA hospital system in the US. Based on previous research, women were hypothesized to be at higher risk for psychological problems. We adjusted our results for confounding factors, including history of trauma, childhood abuse, co
