In recent years the development of new virtual environments has been qualitatively high and fast at the same time, but the dissemination of virtual reality (VR) in clinical practice is still scarce. The aim of this review is to give an insight into the state of the art of the use of VR as an assessment tool and treatment intervention in anxiety and related disorders as posttraumatic stress disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorders. Besides an overview into the efficacy of VR, a summary will be given on assumed working mechanisms in virtual reality exposure therapy and how this aligns with cu

New therapeutic approaches for alcohol dependence (AD) include virtual reality (VR)-based treatments offering scalable options for cue exposure (CE), a well-established strategy in cognitive behavioral therapy. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and tolerability of a new VR-CE paradigm. On an explorative basis, factors influencing the induction of craving were examined. This single-arm monocentric clinical study included n = 21 patients with AD in inpatient rehabilitation treatment, that completed one VR-CE session including confrontation with alcohol-associated stimuli. Measurements

Virtual reality involves the creation of an interactive three-dimensional virtual world which the user can navigate. This technology is proposed for anxiety disorders as an alternative to the in vivo and imaginative exposure provided in cognitive behavioral therapy, the gold standard psychoterapeutic treatment for this pathology. According to a signifcant number of publications including meta-analysis, virtual reality therapy exposure is at least equivalent to in vivo exposure in specifc phobias, panic disorder with agoraphobia, post-traumatic stress disorder and social phobia. A fundamental f

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common mental disorder and a leading cause of disability, affecting approximately 280 million people worldwide. Its pathological mechanisms are closely linked to neurotransmitter homeostasis imbalance and neuroplasticity impairment. We aimed to systematically evaluate the clinical efficacy of virtual reality (VR) training in improving depression and to elucidate its dual-pathway regulatory mechanism involving neurotransmitter-plasticity interactions.
METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, CNKI, and ScienceDirect databases from their formation t

Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is a mental health condition marked by reduced food consumption, intense fear of weight gain, and distorted body experience. Virtual Reality (VR)-based techniques-i.e., Body-Swapping and Mirror Exposure techniques-offer promising avenues for addressing body disturbance in AN, allowing patients to embody virtual bodies varying in size and shape. We used a single-subject experimental design to explore the potential of virtual reality multisensory experiences for mitigating body disturbance in AN. We examine the case of a 24-year-old female hospitalized with restrictive Anor

INTRODUCTION: Several studies demonstrated the utility of immersive virtual reality (VR) as a complementary approach to conventional therapy for improving motor, psychological and cognitive impairment in some pathological conditions. Our pilot study aims to evaluate for the first time: 1) sense of presence, tolerability and usability of VR immersive experience in patients with early stages of Huntington disease (eHDp) compared to healthy controls (HC); 2) correlation between the use of technology/cybersickness and the variables of presence/usability; 3) correlation between clinical characteris

OBJECTIVE: Since the mid-1990s, a significant scientific literature has evolved regarding the outcomes from the use of what we now refer to as clinical virtual reality (VR). This use of VR simulation technology has produced encouraging results when applied to address cognitive, psychological, motor, and functional impairments across a wide range of clinical health conditions. This article addresses the question, "Is clinical VR ready for primetime?"
METHOD: After a brief description of the various forms of VR technology, we discuss the trajectory of clinical VR over the last 20 years and summ

During the last decade a number of studies have been conducted in order to examine if virtual reality exposure therapy can be an alternative form of therapy for the treatment of mental disorders and particularly for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Imaginal exposure therapy, which is one of the components of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, cannot be easily applied to all patients and in cases like those virtual reality can be used as an alternative or a supportive psychotherapeutic technique. Most studies using virtual reality have focused on anxiety disorders, mainly in specific phobias, but

CASES: Three consecutive patients (16F, 52F, and 58F) underwent multiextremity amputation with targeted muscle reinnervation and regenerative peripheral nerve interface. Virtual reality (VR) therapy began postoperatively and continued for 6 to 10 weeks as needed, with assessment at 8 months. The patients experienced negligible-to-mild adverse effects (mean Simulator Sickness Questionnaire: 12.5) and reported good usability (System Usability Score: 62.5). Phantom limb pain decreased from 9.5/10 to 2.3/10 during VR (p = 0.002).
CONCLUSION: These cases demonstrate that VR can be safely and effec

With exposure emerging as a key ingredient in anxiety treatment for childhood anxiety disorders (CADs), expansion of exposure techniques is a promising avenue for improving treatment efficacy. The present study examined use of imaginal exposure (IE), a technique understudied in the treatment of CADs. Specifically, the study tested whether two forms of exposure to worries (verbal IE and virtual reality exposure therapy, VRET) would be effective and acceptable forms of exposure with youth. Twenty youth with fears of academic failure completed both types of worry exposure, presented in randomized
