A morbidity study of viscose rayon workers exposed to carbon disulphide.

ABSTRACT A historical cohort study of the morbidity of CS2 and control workers was carried out in a viscose rayon factory and an adjacent cotton mill. A total of 725 male workers was employed at the two factories on 1 May 1966. All records of medical treatment received by these men from general practitioners, hospitals, and plant clinics for the period from 1 May 1966 to 31 December 1970 were obtained from receipts issued by those medical institutions and kept in the health insurance office. The study population was divided into five categories according to the duration and severity of CS2 exp

A comparison of the plasma viscosity and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate as screening tests.

Plasma viscosity (PV) and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were determined in 343 patients. The results were correlated with the presence or absence of a clinical diagnosis usually associated with a raised ESR. The percentages of false-positive results were 4,9% and 3,8% and those of false-negative results were 12,8% and 13,1% for the PV and ESR respectively. PV measurements led to the detection of 8 cases of hypoproteinaemia in patients with normal ESR values, and could also detect and quantify hyperproteinaemias. In coeliac disease the PV correlated closely with the total plasma prot

A Training System for Human Standing Stability Using Virtual Viscosity Fields.

Enhancement of postural stability in standing is essential for fall prevention in the context of demographic aging. Against such a background, this study proposes a personalized training system based on individual limits of stability (LOS) for a human standing state. The system evaluates LOS in eight directions using center-of-mass (COM) and center-of-pressure (COP) measurement devices and provides game-based feedback, then promotes balance within the relevant LOS parameters. Loading is individualized by applying greater force to virtual objects as the COP approaches the LOS determined for eac

Viscosity matters: OCTA assessment of retinal microcirculation under silicone oil tamponade.

PURPOSE: This retrospective observational cohort study utilized in situ optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) to directly compare the early retinal and choroidal microvascular effects of 1000- and 5000-centistoke (cSt) silicone oil tamponades in a silicone-filled globe following pars plana vitrectomy for macula-on rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. METHODS: A total of 64 eyes of 64 patients were included. Patients were grouped by silicone oil viscosity (1000 cSt, n=32 vs. 5000 cSt, n=32) using propensity score matching. OCTA imaging was performed at postoperative weeks 1, month 1, a

Mineral oil viscosity and quantity impact osmotic pressure, not embryo development.

Dry incubators prevent bacterial growth and allow time-lapse imaging. However, they cause more significant osmotic pressure changes in the culture medium than in humidified incubators. Few reports have explored the effect of osmotic pressure on human embryos cultured under different conditions. This study examined how changes in osmotic pressure affect human embryos in a dry incubator. The study incubated embryos in culture mediums covered with mineral oil of varying viscosities and quantities. The osmotic pressure of the culture medium was measured daily for six-day period (Day 0-6) in four e

Nanoswimmers statistical mechanics: Unlocking whole-blood viscosity sensing for tumor microenvironment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The ability to sense the biological microenvironment surrounding early-stage tumor tissues is critical for tumorigenesis tracing and tumor detection and treatment. An efficient tumor microenvironment (TME) sensing strategy remains a significant challenge. We propose a novel "seeing is sensing" approach that has the potential to discern the whole-blood viscosity (WBV) information of the TME by using a swarm of nanoswimmers (NS). METHODS: In this study, we employ statistical mechanics methods to derive the relationship between the aggregation of NS in the microscale an

Whole Blood Viscosity and Cerebral Blood Flow in Acute Ischemic Stroke.

Existing effective treatments for ischemic stroke restore blood supply to the ischemic region using thrombolysis or mechanical removal of clot. However, it is increasingly recognized that successful removal of occlusive thrombus from the large artery-recanalization, may not always be accompanied by successful restoration of blood flow to the downstream tissues-reperfusion. Ultimately, brain tissue survival depends on cerebral perfusion, and a functioning microcirculation. Because capillary diameter is often equal to or smaller than an erythrocyte, microcirculation is largely dependent on eryth

Comparison of initial treatment response to two enhanced-viscosity artificial tears.

PURPOSE: To compare the effectiveness of 1.0% carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) (Refresh Liquigel, Allergan, Inc., Irvine, CA) and propylene glycol/polyethylene glycol 400 (PG-HPG) (Systane, Alcon, Fort Worth, TX) in providing relief of dry eye symptoms and signs. METHODS: To evaluate patient comfort and drop preference, patients were given CMC in one eye and PG-HPG in the other. Five minutes after the initial drop application, patients were questioned on overall preference and comfort, as measured by stickiness, blurring, and soothing. Patients were then randomized to receive CMC or PG-HPG in bot

Hematocrit, volume expander, temperature, and shear rate effects on blood viscosity.

UNLABELLED: Our goal was to determine and predict the effects of temperature, shear rate, hematocrit, and different volume expanders on blood viscosity in conditions mimicking deep hypothermia for cardiac operations. Blood was obtained from six healthy adults. Dilutions were prepared to hematocrits of 35%, 30%, 22.5%, and 15% using plasma, 0.9% NaCl, 5% human albumin, and 6% hydroxyethyl starch. Viscosity was measured over a range of shear rates (4.5-450 s(-1)) and temperature (0 degrees -37 degrees C). A parametric expression for predicting blood viscosity based on the study variables was dev

Blood viscosity factors and occlusive arterial disease in renal transplant recipients.

29 cadaveric renal transplant recipients were assessed clinically for evidence of occlusive arterial disease prior to undergoing blood viscosity studies. Nineteen patients had manifest arterial disease (myocardial infarction, cerebral thrombosis, angina, intermittent claudication, absent peripheral pulses), while ten were free from vascular complications. Patients with arterial disease showed significant elevations of plasma viscosity (p less than 0.005), aggregation of red cells measured both at 37 and 20 degrees C (p less than 0.05), fibrinogen (p less than 0.005), serum triglyceride (p less

Marine snow viscosity regulates microbial degradation and the ocean carbon sink.

Bacterial degradation of marine snow aggregates is a major component of global carbon cycling. Whether aggregate carbon is released in the upper ocean or is sequestered at depth depends on its sinking speed and degradation rate. However, little is known about the physical constraints of bacterial colonization and degradation of individual aggregates. Using molecular rotors to measure the nanoscale viscosity field of natural aggregates, we show that aggregates are highly structured microhabitats with less-viscous regions that are accessible for colonization and more-viscous regions that correla

ER-localized and viscosity-responsive fluorescent probe for imaging osteosarcoma microenvironment.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is a highly aggressive bone tumor with rapid progression and high metastatic potential. Current clinical diagnosis relies mainly on imaging and biopsy, which are limited in detecting early pathological abnormalities and are unsuitable for real-time or repeated monitoring. Viscosity, a key biophysical parameter of the tumor microenvironment (TME), is closely linked to metabolic activity and signal transduction; abnormal viscosity changes may serve as sensitive indicators of OS progression and microenvironmental remodeling. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER), an essential organelle
