BACKGROUND: Fetuin-A is a glycoprotein with high affinity for calcium-phosphates, with a role in cartilage and bone metabolism, and an anti-inflammatory role in injury. Studies have shown decreasing serum fetuin-A levels in patients with severe osteoarthritis (OA), and lower amounts of fetuin-A in OA sclerotic osteoblasts. Therefore, decreasing fetuin-A during OA might be responsible for increased inflammation, cartilage mineralization and subchondral bone thickness. To assess the therapeutic potential of fetuin-A in post-traumatic OA (PTOA), we used micrometric hyaluronic-acid particles (µHA)

AIM: To prospectively evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of repeated sodium hyaluronate injections for the treatment of knee pain due to Kashin-Beck disease (KBD).
METHODS: A total of 85 patients with KBD-based knee pain were treated with two cycles of a 5-week course of sodium hyaluronate and received clinical assessments with a follow-up period of 24 months after the first cycle. The primary efficacy measure was the visual analogue scale (VAS) pain score. The second efficacy measure included the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores; and the p

Degenerative arthritis of the knee joint has become a major social problem worldwide due to population aging. There are several treatment options for knee osteoarthritis, and the intraarticular injection of sodium hyaluronate is commonly selected by many clinicians as a nonsurgical treatment. However, the efficacy of the treatment is controversial. In this pilot study, we aimed to compare polynucleotide sodium (Conjuran®) with sodium hyaluronate (Hyruan Plus®) and 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether-crosslinked sodium hyaluronate (Synovian®) in terms of analgesic efficacy after intraarticular inje

INTRODUCTION: Intra-articular injections of various drugs are commonly used in patients with degenerative osteoarthritis and also in haemophilic patients. Haemophilic arthropathy is a particular type of secondary osteoarthritis (OA), but the degeneration of strong synovial, cartilaginous and subchondral constituents is provoked by the direct action of iron and blood in the joint.
AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study is to review the literature regarding the use of various intra-articular drugs in joints affected by haemophilic arthropathy.
METHODS: We reviewed the data from the literature

Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis is a severe cutaneous adverse reaction characterized by the rapid onset of nonfollicular, sterile pustules on an erythematous base, typically accompanied by fever (≥38 °C), neutrophilia (7.0 × 10⁹/L), and characteristic histopathological features. This case report presents the first documented instance of acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis after hyaluronic acid viscosupplementation. A 61-year-old female developed a pruritic, erythematous rash that rapidly evolved into generalized erythroderma with systemic manifestations after receiving intra-

Conservative approach is usually the first choice for the management of the knee degeneration processes, especially in the phase of the disease recognized as early osteoarthritis (OA) with no clear lesions or associated abnormalities requiring to be addressed surgically. A wide spectrum of treatments is available, from non-pharmacological modalities to dietary supplements and pharmacological therapies, as well as minimally invasive procedures involving injections of various substances aiming to restore joint homeostasis and provide clinical improvement and possibly a disease-modifying effect.

INTRODUCTION: Intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid (HA) is often used as therapy for knee osteoarthritis because it is less expensive and less aggressive than total knee replacement. Therefore, it is important to document whether HA is safe and efficacious. We tested whether single and multiple injection viscosupplementation with HA is associated with clinically meaningful pain relief in a new randomized clinical trial (RCT). Our objective was to compare safety and efficacy of intra-articular HA in two formulations: one 3.0 ml injection of Durolane versus five 2.5 ml injections of Artz

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that high-molecular-weight (MW) cross-linked (CL) hyaluronic acid (HA) improves joint lubrication and has an enhanced chondroprotective effect. We examined the histopathological changes and friction coefficients in osteoarthritic knee joints after injecting high-MW CL HA.
DESIGN: A bilateral anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) model in 20 Japanese white rabbits was used. From week 5 after transection, low-MW HA (0.8 × 10(6) Da; HA80) or high-MW CL HA (6 × 10(6) Da; HA600) was injected weekly into 10 right knee for 3 weeks; normal saline (NS) was injected

Viscosupplementation, or the intra articular administration of hyaluronic acid in order to stabilise synovial fluid chemistry and improve its functional quality, is now a popular therapeutic method whose efficacy, based on numerous published studies, makes it not only a form of symptomatic treatment, but also, to a considerable extent, a cause-oriented treatment. However, a possibly controversial aspect of this therapy is the use of “intra articular hyaluronate” in the treatment of post-traumatic or inflammatory soft-tissue lesions in in the musculoskeletal system. Inappropriate administration

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a common chronic degenerative joint disease and a leading cause of pain, disability, and impaired quality of life. Cardiovascular comorbidities (CVCs), particularly hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes, frequently coexist with KOA and may influence both disease burden and treatment options, especially the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This study aimed to determine the prevalence of CVCs in patients with KOA and evaluate their association with pain, functional impairment, and therapeutic management.
METHODS: We conducted a c

Knee pain is commonly seen in orthopedic and rehabilitation outpatient clinical settings, and in the aging population. Bursitis of the knee joint, especially when the volume of the synovial fluid is large enough, can compress and distend the nearby soft tissues, causing pain in the knee joint. Out of all the bursae surrounding the knee joint, supra-patellar bursitis is most often associated with knee pain. Treatment strategies in managing supra-patellar bursitis include the aspiration of joint synovial fluid and then followed by steroid injection into the bursa. When supra-patellar bursitis is

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain and functional impairment interfere with the quality of life of subjects suffering from temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Intra-articular (IA) hyaluronic acid (HA) injections have been shown to alleviate pain and improve mandibular mobility in patients with TMJ osteoarthritis (OA).
OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of the study was to identify the prognostic factors of patient satisfaction for a single IA injection of a mannitol-modified crosslinked HA (HANOX-M-XL) in patients with TMJ-OA. The second goal was to obtain clinical data on effectiveness, safety and mandi

BACKGROUND: Intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid-also called viscosupplementation (VS)-is frequently used for the symptomatic treatment of knee osteoarthritis, a painful and debilitating long-term disease, affecting an important fraction of elderly populations. Severity of knee osteoarthritis is generally described by Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) radiological classification. VS has been widely studied in many clinical trials; however, the results are rarely analyzed in detail according to KL grade.
METHOD: A large, clinical, open-label study was performed in 2004-2007 on 1177 patients with
