Subtle binocular vision anomalies in migraine.

A literature review reveals old references to an association between migraine headache and binocular vision anomalies, but a lack of scientific evidence evaluating these claims. In a masked case control study, we investigated binocular vision using standard clinical tests in people with migraine and in controls. Some test results suggest that heterophoria and fixation disparity are more common in the migraine group. The migraine group also had slightly reduced stereopsis. We found significant correlations between some migraine variables and some binocular vision variables (e.g., duration of wo

Visual influences on balance.

This paper discusses the impact of vision on balance and orientation in patients with vestibular disorders and in anxiety patients with space and motion discomfort (SMD). When the vestibular system is impaired, vision has a greater influence on standing postural control, resulting in greater sway when individuals are presented with erroneous or conflicting visual cues. Studies have shown that individuals with other motion sensitivities, such as motion sickness, also tend to rely on vision for balance and do not disregard erroneous visual cues. Recently, patients with anxiety disorders that inc

Study on the relationship between scoliosis and vision problems: A narrative review.

Adolescent scoliosis is one of the most common surgical disorders of the pediatric spine. With timely detection and early treatment, most scoliotic children can avoid major and expensive surgery. Vision problems are also frequently found at an early age and can take a toll on individuals quality of life. However, scoliosis, a severe health hazard to adolescents, is often accompanied by vision problems clinically, including myopia, astigmatism, strabismus, amblyopia, horizontal paralysis, and blindness. And people with genetic defects have a higher probability of suffering both spinal problems

Standard Correction of Vision Worsens EMG Activity of Pericranial Muscles in Chronic TMD Subjects.

Recent studies showed an evident correlation between the stomatognathic system and the visual system. These results suggest that subjects who are affected by both temporomandibular (TMD) disorders and refractive disorders present with altered control of pericranial musculature tone and higher open-eye electromyographic (EMG) values. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of standard vision correction on EMG in subjects suffering from TMD compared with application of the same vision treatments to non-TMD subjects. 40 subjects were enrolled in this study. The test group included

Binocular vision anomalies: an emerging cause of malpractice claims.

BACKGROUND: Tumors that affect the visual system are a significant cause of liability claims involving eyecare practitioners. Individuals with brain tumors or intraocular tumors may seek examination for associated binocular vision disorders such as strabismus and reduced acuity. A disporportionate number of these individuals are children. METHODS: A review of malpractice claims was performed to identify representative clinical presentations in which binocular vision disorders were the cause for examination. RESULTS: Strabismus and amblyopia in children, if not promptly diagnosed and properly

National sex- and age-specific burden of blindness and vision impairment by cause in Mexico in 2019: a secondary analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019.

BACKGROUND: Reliable national estimations for blindness and vision impairment are fundamental to assessing their burden and developing public health policies. However, no comprehensive analysis is available for Mexico. Therefore, in this observational study we describe the national burden of blindness and vision loss by cause and severity during 2019. METHODS: Using public data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study 2019, we present national prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs) counts and crude and age-standardized rates (per 100,000 people) of total, severity- and cause-s

Hereditary optic neuropathies.

Hereditary optic neuropathies comprise a group of disorders of the optic nerve that may be inherited in an autosomal recessive, autosomal dominant, X-linked, or maternal familial pattern. These disorders should be included in differential diagnosis of both congenital and acquired vision loss. They often present with a painless, slowly progressive, bilateral decreased vision. As in the case of LHON, a hereditary optic neuropathy may have an acute presentation. Clinical examination is characterized by bilateral decreased visual acuity, central scotomas on visual field testing, decreased color vi

Acquired dyschromatopsias.

Theories of color vision have been founded on behavioral observations of how the human eye distinguishes colors and mixtures of colors. Studies of congenital dyschromatopsias (inherited disorders of color vision) have been important to the development of these theories. Subsequent studies of acquired dyschromatopsias (disorders of color vision caused by disease) were understandably influenced by these concepts. Theories to explain the patterns of color vision impairment found in acquired diseases (for example, preferential hue discrimination defects) have stressed the likelihood of selective d

Review: Sport Performance and the Two-visual-system Hypothesis of Vision: Two Pathways but Still Many Questions.

The two-visual-system hypothesis (TVSH) provides a framework for understanding the nature of the visual information athletes are likely to rely on during competition. If valid, the framework provides a valuable means of evaluating the likely efficacy of different vision training tools that claim to improve the sport performance of athletes. The TVSH has been used to explain that many of the existing methods of testing and training vision may be ineffective to improve on-field sport performance. The TVSH suggests that the visual pathway used to control actions on-field may be different-and rely

Impaired body balance control in adults with strabismus.

Previous studies revealed that people with binocular vision disorders have poor postural stability. However, most of the research was performed only on children and under binocular viewing condition, that could negatively affect the results. The aim of the current study was to investigate the influence of extra-ocular proprioceptive signals on postural stability in young adults with binocular vision disorders. Moreover, additional mental task was introduced to detect any postural compensation which could possibly hide the real influence of afferent extra-ocular signals. 21 Subjects, aged 18-45

Retinal degenerative diseases--mechanisms and perspectives of treatment.

Retinal degenerative diseases are an extensive group of ocular diseases, leading to vision disorders and finally irreversible vision loss. They are an significant problem, because degenerative processes exist in common ocular disorders like glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration and many other less frequently occurring disorders. In this article, we present mechanisms leading to retinal degeneration like excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, inflammation and summarize the latest reports concerning neuroprotection in the treatment of retina degenerative diseases.

Impact of symptomatic vitreous degeneration on photopic and mesopic contrast thresholds.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Contrast thresholds under photopic and mesopic luminance conditions are compromised in subjects with vitreous degeneration. A plausible explanation is needed for the visual discomfort expressed by patients suffering from symptomatic vitreous degeneration. BACKGROUND: The current study investigates the effect of symptomatic vitreous degeneration on photopic and mesopic contrast at high spatial frequencies. METHODS: An age-matched sample of 115 subjects, comprising 30 subjects with symptomatic vitreous floaters (cases) and 85 healthy subjects (controls), was included in thi
