Cycloplegic autorefraction doubles diagnostic yield of myopia compared to vision testing: findings from a decade-long screening programme.

BACKGROUND: Cycloplegic autorefraction may offer higher diagnostic accuracy than uncorrected visual acuity (VA) screening. We aimed to evaluate diagnostic yield and risk factors for previously unrecognised myopia. METHODS: This repeated cross-sectional study analysed data from 33 642 kindergarteners aged 5-6 years enrolled in the Yilan Myopia Prevention and Vision Improvement Program from 2014 to 2024. Participants underwent uncorrected VA testing and on-site cycloplegic autorefraction. Caregivers completed questionnaires on myopia-related behaviours. Previously unrecognised or newly detected

Incorporating computer vision on smart phone photographs into screening for inflammatory arthritis: results from an Indian patient cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are increasingly used to classify medical images, but few studies utilize smartphone photographs. The objective of this study was to assess CNNs for differentiating patients from controls and detecting joint inflammation. METHODS: We included consecutive patients with early inflammatory arthritis and healthy controls, all examined by a rheumatologist (15% by two). Standardized hand photographs of the hands were taken, anonymized and cropped around joints. Pre-trained CNN models were fine-tuned on our dataset (80% training; 20% test set). We use

Refractive errors, amblyopia risk factors and vision screening in children aged 7-10 years in Aotearoa New Zealand.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Vision screening is important for detecting undiagnosed vision conditions that are common in school-aged children. However, current vision screening protocols are poor at detecting vision conditions that are most common in the Aotearoa New Zealand paediatric population. BACKGROUND: Uncorrected refractive error and amblyopia are the most common causes of visual impairment in children. The most appropriate vision screening method depends on the refractive error profile of the population. This study aimed to: estimate the prevalence of refractive errors and amblyopia risk fac

Association between fusion visual function deficits and myopia in school-aged children: an analysis based on competitive binocular vision screening.

OBJECTIVE: Even after refractive correction, myopic children remain at a significantly higher risk of visual function deficits compared to non-myopic children. Competitive binocular visual function testing is a screening method designed to simulate complex visual environments, specifically developed for the large-scale and rapid assessment of children’s visual performance under challenging conditions. This study aims to investigate whether visual function deficits observed in simulated complex environments are associated with myopia, thereby informing potential strategies for myopia prevention
