Choroidal thickness and visual acuity in highly myopic eyes.

PURPOSE: To examine predictive factors for visual acuity in highly myopic eyes. METHODS: Consecutive patients with high myopia (≥6 diopters [D]) with no other pathology such as lacquer cracks in the fovea, choroidal neovascularization, or myopic macular schisis, were evaluated. The study was performed in 2 retina centers, one in the United States and the other in Japan. Enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography was obtained, and the central foveal, outer retinal hyporeflective layer and inner segment to retinal pigment epithelium aggregate, and the subfoveal choroidal thicknesses we

Modified dynamic visual acuity tests after acoustic neuroma resection.

CONCLUSION: These data suggest that visual acuity during quiet sitting is dynamic, requiring full body interaction of vestibulo-ocular and postural responses. These findings may have practical implications for seating design and design of tasks requiring good visual acuity while seated. OBJECTIVES: Looking at something during quiet sitting is usually assumed to be a static activity. We tested the idea that visual acuity during quiet sitting is dynamic, requiring integration of whole body responses as well as intact vestibulo-ocular reflexes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Normal subjects and patient

Optokinetic stimuli: motion sickness, visual acuity, and eye movements.

BACKGROUND: It is commonly assumed that motion sickness caused by moving visual scenes arises from the illusion of self-motion (i.e., vection). HYPOTHESES: Both studies reported here investigated whether sickness and vection were correlated. The first study compared sickness and vection created by real and virtual visual displays. The second study investigated whether visual fixation to suppress eye movements affected motion sickness or vection. METHOD: In the first experiment subjects viewed an optokinetic drum and a virtual simulation of the optokinetic drum. The second experiment investig

Transillumination of iris and subnormal visual acuity--ocular albinism?

BACKGROUND: A common clinical sign in children with subnormal visual acuity or slow visual development was iris transillumination. This was used as the inclusion criterion in a study of children shown to have a subnormal visual acuity in a general health examination at age 4 years. METHODS: Refraction values, stereopsis, fundus photography, macular and nerve head appearance, and visual evoked response (VER) recordings were studied in 18 children. The clinical results were compared with 64 controls referred to the eye clinic because of subnormal vision from the general health examination or fr

Effect of age on visual acuity after cataract extraction.

The best Snellen visual acuity in the three months after cataract extraction was found to decline with the age of the patient. The relationship was identical in 111 patients who had extracapsular extraction and a Pearce tripod posterior chamber intraocular lens and in 50 patients who had intracapsular extraction with spectacle correction. Vision after operation varied from a mean value of 6/5 at 50 years to 6/12 at 90 years, a decline of 1 line per 13.4 years. In the intracapsular group, over a mean follow-up period of 14 years, the rate of fall in acuity with increasing age after operation wa

Visual acuity in optic atrophy: a quantitative clinicopathological analysis.

Analysis of clinicopathological data from 14 eyes with optic atrophy from various causes revealed a simple relationship between visual acuity and the number of surviving axons in the temporal quadrant of the optic nerve head. This provides support for the theory that the minimum angle of resolution (inverse of visual acuity) is directly proportional to the spatial separation of transmitting foveal cones. The theory allows estimation of the functional fraction of foveocortical neural channels from clinical acuity measurements.

New methods for predicting visual acuity after cataract surgery.

Recent advances in technology have contributed to better evaluation of potential visual acuity in patients with cataracts. The blue field entoptic test, the clinical interferometers, and the Potential Acuity Meter are discussed with respect to their basic principles, clinical uses, advantages, and limitations. There are problems in evaluating these instruments, but their findings can play an important role in clinical decision making.

Clinical applications of preferential looking measures of visual acuity.

We have undertaken 3 lines of research aimed at the eventual transformation of the laboratory-based preferential looking (PL) acuity-testing procedures into clinically-useful techniques. (1) The first line of research involves studies of the parameters of PL testing, and the establishing of norms for various groups. The results show that acuity development is closely tied to gestational age, that infants' acuity is reduced at low luminances but does not vary significantly at levels above 1 log cd/m2, and that monocular acuity is poorer than previously-published binocular acuity norms. (2) The

Visual deprivation and foveation characteristics both underlie visual acuity deficits in idiopathic infantile nystagmus.

PURPOSE: Children with idiopathic infantile nystagmus (IIN) exhibit visual acuity deficits that have been modeled in terms of foveation characteristics of the nystagmus waveform. Here we present evidence for an additional component of acuity loss associated with the deprivation experienced during the sensitive period of visual development. METHODS: Binocular grating visual acuity and eye movement recordings were obtained from 56 children with IIN (age 4.8 ± 3.2 years) and documented waveform history from longitudinal visits. Visual acuity was modeled in terms of foveation characteristics (Nys

Visual Acuity Influences Visual Outcome in Endophthalmitis: A 10-Year Retrospective Observational Cohort Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Endophthalmitis is a severe, sight-threatening intraocular infection that may follow ophthalmic procedures or arise endogenously. Since the Endophthalmitis Vitrectomy Study (EVS, 1995), surgical and antimicrobial strategies have evolved. This study aimed to evaluate treatment approaches, microbial spectrum, and outcomes of endophthalmitis cases at the University Eye Clinic Innsbruck over the past decade. METHODS: A retrospective observational cohort analysis of all patients treated for endophthalmitis between January 2013 and December 2023 was conducted. Cases were categorized a
