The neural basis of biased competition in human visual cortex.

A typical scene contains many different objects that compete for neural representation due to the limited processing capacity of the visual system. At the neural level, competition among multiple stimuli is evidenced by the mutual suppression of their visually evoked responses and occurs most strongly at the level of the receptive field. The competition among multiple objects can be biased by both bottom-up sensory-driven mechanisms and top-down influences, such as selective attention. Functional brain imaging studies reveal that biasing signals due to selective attention can modulate neural a

The effects of visual cortex lesions on the perception of rotated shapes.

Monkeys with inferior temporal cortex lesions cannot discriminate between different shapes (e.g., + vs. O) but can discriminate between shapes that differ only in orientation (e.g., 6 vs 9). Lesions of the parietal cortex, on the other hand, impair the discrimination of rotated shapes but spare the ability to discriminate between different shapes. A similar dissociation is found between some visual agnosics who can match but not identify rotated views of objects and other patients who can identify and discriminate objects only if the view is conventional; any change in orientation disrupts per

Feedback from human posterior parietal cortex enables visuospatial category representations as early as primary visual cortex.

INTRODUCTION: Categorization is a fundamental cognitive process, whereby the brain assigns meaning to sensory stimuli. Previous studies have found category representations in prefrontal cortex and posterior parietal cortex (PPC). However, these higher-order areas lack the fine-scale spatial representations of early sensory areas, and it remains unclear what mechanisms enable flexible categorization based on fine-scale features. METHODS: In this study, we decoded functional MRI signals and measured causal influences, across visual, parietal, and prefrontal cortex from participants performing c

Complex motion selectivity in PMLS cortex following early lesions of primary visual cortex in the cat.

In the cat, the analysis of visual motion cues has generally been attributed to the posteromedial lateral suprasylvian cortex (PMLS) (Toyama et al., 1985; Rauschecker et al., 1987; Rauschecker, 1988; Kim et al., 1997). The responses of neurons in this area are not critically dependent on inputs from the primary visual cortex (VC), as lesions of VC leave neuronal response properties in PMLS relatively unchanged (Spear & Baumann, 1979; Spear, 1988; Guido et al., 1990b). However, previous studies have used a limited range of visual stimuli. In this study, we assessed whether neurons in PMLS corte

The Relationship Between MRI-Measured Structure of the Visual Cortex and Visual Function in Patients With Glaucoma.

PRÉCIS: The area corresponding to the peripheral visual field in the primary visual cortex of the brain is associated with ophthalmologic parameters. PURPOSE: Reproducing the relationship of the visual field with the primary visual cortex is known as retinotopic mapping. The primary visual cortex is known to be atrophic in glaucoma patients. However, there are few reports on which areas most reflect glaucomatous changes. In this study, we used magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate the relationship between various ophthalmic parameters and overall and regional structural changes in the primar

The influence of electrode types to the visually induced gamma oscillations in mouse primary visual cortex.

The local field potential (LFP) is an extracellular electrical signal associated with neural ensemble input and dendritic signaling. Previous studies have linked gamma band oscillations of the LFP in cortical circuits to sensory stimuli encoding, attention, memory, and perception. Inconsistent results regarding gamma tuning for visual features were reported, but it remains unclear whether these discrepancies are due to variations in electrode properties. Specifically, the surface area and impedance of the electrode are important characteristics in LFP recording. To comprehensively address thes

Possible Contribution of Altered Cholinergic Activity in the Visual Cortex in Visual Hallucinations in Parkinson's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Up to one-third of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience visual hallucinations (VHs). Lewy bodies are sparse in the visual cortices and seem unlikely to explain the hallucinations. Some neuroimaging studies have found that perfusion is reduced in the occipital lobe in individuals with VHs. Recent work has suggested that decreased cholinergic input may directly lead to the decreased perfusion. The investigators hypothesized that individuals with PD and VHs would have biochemical evidence of reduced microvascular perfusion and reduced cholinergic activity in areas of the b

Visual hallucinations are associated with hyperconnectivity between the amygdala and visual cortex in people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: While auditory verbal hallucinations (AH) are a cardinal symptom of schizophrenia, people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia (SZ) may also experience visual hallucinations (VH). In a retrospective analysis of a large sample of SZ and healthy controls (HC) studied as part of the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) Biomedical Informatics Research Network (FBIRN), we asked if SZ who endorsed experiencing VH during clinical interviews had greater connectivity between visual cortex and limbic structures than SZ who did not endorse experiencing VH. METHODS: We analyzed resting

A lightning strike to the head causing a visual cortex defect with simple and complex visual hallucinations.

The case of a 23-year-old mountaineer who was hit by a lightning strike to the occiput causing a large central visual field defect and bilateral tympanic membrane ruptures is described. Owing to extreme agitation, the patient was sent into a drug-induced coma for 3 days. After extubation, she experienced simple and complex visual hallucinations for several days, but otherwise largely recovered. Neuropsychological tests revealed deficits in fast visual detection tasks and non-verbal learning and indicated a right temporal lobe dysfunction, consistent with a right temporal focus on electroenceph

Functional reorganization of the visual cortex in blindness: a connectivity perspective.

Visual deprivation provides a critical model for understanding how sensory experience and developmental constraints shape cortical organization. In blindness, the occipital cortex is recruited for tactile and auditory perception as well as language, memory, mathematical processing, and executive control. The core question is how visual cortex becomes functionally embedded in non-visual and cognitive systems, and how this embedding gives rise to particular forms of occipital recruitment. Connectivity is central to this question because cortical functions are shaped, in part, by the information

Rapid and cumulative adult plasticity in the mouse visual cortex.

Experience-dependent neural plasticity enables the brain to adapt to diverse and dynamic environments by reshaping circuits. In the adult visual system, this plasticity can be elicited by repeated sensory stimuli; however, its temporal dynamics and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we investigated the regulation of visual response potentiation induced by repeated light flashes in the primary visual cortex of awake adult mice. Our findings revealed two distinct temporal phases of potentiation: a rapid phase occurring within seconds and a cumulative phase developing over hours to days.

Sensory origin of visually evoked activity in auditory cortex.

Cross-modal responses are common in primary sensory cortex, yet a recent study showed that signals in primary visual cortex (V1) once labeled multisensory were instead more closely related to face movements. To what extent can multisensory processing in other modalities also be explained by face movements? We measured face movements and neural activity in awake mouse primary auditory cortex (A1) and V1 in response to visual and auditory stimulation as well as during spontaneous activity. We find that visual stimuli rarely evoke face movements, A1 responses to visual input remain robust even in

The involvement of the human prefrontal cortex in the emergence of visual awareness.

Exploring the neural mechanisms of awareness is a fundamental task of cognitive neuroscience. There is an ongoing dispute regarding the role of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in the emergence of awareness, which is partially raised by the confound between report- and awareness-related activity. To address this problem, we designed a visual awareness task that can minimize report-related motor confounding. Our results show that saccadic latency is significantly shorter in the aware trials than in the unaware trials. Local field potential (LFP) data from six patients consistently show early (200-30

Plasticity in visual cortex is disrupted in a mouse model of tauopathy.

Alzheimer's disease and other dementias are thought to underlie a progressive impairment of neural plasticity. Previous work in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease shows pronounced changes in artificially-induced plasticity in hippocampus, perirhinal and prefrontal cortex. However, it is not known how degeneration disrupts intrinsic forms of brain plasticity. Here we characterised the impact of tauopathy on a simple form of intrinsic plasticity in the visual system, which allowed us to track plasticity at both long (days) and short (minutes) timescales. We studied rTg4510 transgenic mice at ea

A Model for the Origin of Motion Direction Selectivity in Visual Cortex.

Motion perception is a vital part of our sensory repertoire in that it contributes to navigation, awareness of moving objects, and communication. Motion sense in carnivores and primates originates with primary visual cortical neurons selective for motion direction. More than 60 years after the discovery of these neurons, there is still no consensus on the mechanism underlying direction selectivity. This paper describes a model of the cat's visual system in which direction selectivity results from the well-documented orientation selectivity of inhibitory neurons: inhomogeneities in the orientat

CD38 is Required for Dendritic Organization in Visual Cortex and Hippocampus.

Morphological screening of mouse brains with known behavioral deficits can give great insight into the relationship between brain regions and their behavior. Oxytocin- and CD38-deficient mice have previously been shown to have behavioral phenotypes, such as restrictions in social memory, social interactions, and maternal behavior. CD38 is reported as an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) candidate gene and its behavioral phenotypes may be linked to ASD. To address whether these behavioral phenotypes relate to brain pathology and neuronal morphology, here we investigate the morphological changes in

Visual Cortex: The Eccentric Area Prostriata in the Human Brain.

Human area Prostriata is a small, unstudied portion of the visual brain set deep in the calcarine sulcus, next to V1. A recent neuroimaging study in humans indicates that this area is specialized to respond to rapidly moving stimuli in the far periphery, consistent with single-unit responses in other mammals.
