Meckel's diverticulum: A rare cause of acute intestinal occlusion.

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract (Lequet et al., 2017). It results from incomplete obliteration of the vitelline (omphaloenteric) duct. Observed diverticulum complications include inflammation and perforation, hemorrhage and obstruction (Kawamoto et al., 2015). We are reporting on a case of Meckel's diverticulum revealed by acute intestinal obstruction.

Membranous obstruction of the inferior vena cava associated with intrahepatic portosystemic shunt.

Two cases of membranous obstruction of the IVC at hepatic portion associated with intrahepatic portosystemic shunts, which presumably represent the persistent vitelline sinusoids, are presented. The association of these two conditions has not been previously reported and may support the congenital etiology of the membranous obstruction of the IVC. The caval membrane was successfully dilated percutaneously with a balloon catheter in each case.

Bucephalus damriyasai n. sp. (Digenea: Bucephalidae) from the blacktip trevally Caranx heberi (Bennett) (Perciformes: Carangidae) off Bali, Indonesia.

The new species Bucephalus damriyasai n. sp. is described from Caranx heberi (Bennett) from off Bali, Indonesia. It can be distinguished from other Bucephalus spp. recorded from carangid hosts by its narrow elongate body shape and the relatively long distance between the rhynchus and the vitellarium, as well as other features distinguishing it from individual species. The most similar species are differentiated from B. damriyasai n. sp. as follows: B. carangis Yamaguti, 1970 has a much greater length, the rhynchus is smaller and the cirrus-sac is small, not always reaching to the posterior tes

Volume and vascularity of the yolk sac assessed by three-dimensional and power doppler ultrasound.

The yolk sac is an organ of increasingly recognized importance in the initial mechanisms of pregnancy maintenance and the early growth and welfare of the embryo. The aim of our study was to assess the vascularity of the yolk sac and vitelline duct in 150 patients between the 6th and 10th weeks of normal, and uncomplicated pregnancies who were scheduled for termination of pregnancy for psychosocial reasons and 130 complicated pregnancies. In same patients volume of the yolk sac was assessed using Combison 530 3D Voluson, Medison-Kretz Company. Overall visualization rate for yolk sac vessels was

Haemoperitoneum caused by perforation of Meckel's diverticulum in a 5-year-old child.

Common complications of Meckel's diverticulum in children include gastrointestinal haemorrhage, intestinal obstruction or intussuception and diverticulitis. Here, the rare case of a perforated, non-inflamed Meckel's diverticulum causing significant haemoperitoneum in a young child, is reported. The case highlights the potential for rapid deterioration of patients with complications form vitelline duct abnormalities, for which surgical exploration should not be delayed.

Wet umbilicus caused by pancreatic heterotopia in urachal remains.

Drainage from the umbilicus may be due to the presence of structures derived from the vitelline duct or urachus, granulomas, ectopic tissue, or poor hygienic practice. This paper discusses the case of a 6-month-old infant with a wet umbilicus caused by ectopic pancreatic tissue, in urachal remains. No similar cases have been found in the literature.

[Biochemical and sonographic values in early pregnancy in women with a history of early spontaneous abortion].

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to examine interconnections between changes in serum levels of biochemical parameters during pregnancy and sonographic parameters relevant for evaluation of early pregnancy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed serum levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), estradiol (E2), progesterone (PRG) and prolactin (PRL) using ELISA method, in cases of complicated pregnancies with symptoms of imminent miscarriage, and in patients with uncomplicated pregnancies. We evaluated their impact on mean gestational sac diameter (MSD), crown-rump length (CRL), inner diam

Effects of RNA inhibitors on the development of Drosophila embryos permeabilized by a new technique.

The molecular analysis of Drosophila embryogenesis has been hindered by the impermeable nature of the vitelline membrane, which has made it difficult to introduce exogenous substances into the developing embryo. We have developed a modification of the permeabilization technique of Limbourg and Zalokar ('73) in which octane is used to permeabilize the vitelline membrane and dimethylsulfoxide is used to facilitate the transport of exogenous substance across the cell membranes. The procedure is highly effective (ca. 95%) and is consistent with a high frequency of normal development. We have used

Laparoscopic management of terminal ileal volvulus caused by Meckel's diverticulum.

Complications from a Meckel's diverticulum include diverticulitis, bleeding, intussusception, bowel obstruction, a volvulus, a vesicodiverticular fistula, perforation or very rarely as a tumour. We report a case where a Meckel's diverticulum presented with a terminal ileal volvulus in a 32-year-old man without the presence of a typical vitelline band or axial torsion of the diverticulum causing the volvulus. It was successfully managed laparoscopically.

[Complications of Meckel's diverticulum in Dakar (apropos of 2 cases)].

Meckel's diverticula is the most common lesion among the abnormalities resulting from the persistence of the vitelline canal and its vessels. Studying it is interesting, on the one hand, because of the difficulty of detecting it, and, on the other, because of the possibility of accidents dominated by intestinal occlusions and digestive haemorrhages. Two observations on complications in Meckel's diverticula discovered in young men in the casualty unit are covered, and literature on the rare pathology is reviewed.

Two new species of Acanthobothrium Blanchard, 1848 (Cestoda: Onchoproteocephalidea) from rajiform batoids off Argentina.

Two new species of Acanthobothrium Blanchard, 1848 were collected from rajiform batoids along the coast of Argentina. They are Acanthobothrium carolinae sp. n. from Bathyraja magellanica (Philippi) and Acanthobothrium domingae sp. n. from Dipturus brevicaudatus (Marini). Both belong to category 1 and 2 because their total length is lower than 15 mm, they have fewer than 50 proglottids, fewer than 80 testes and a symmetric or asymmetric ovary. Acanthobothrium carolinae sp. n. differs from all congeners by the following combination of features: proglottid apolysis, hook morphology, microthrix pa

Congenital anomalies of the portal venous system--CT appearances with embryological considerations.

The portal vein is formed by the union of the splenic and superior mesenteric veins behind the neck of the pancreas. This system is derived from the vitelline veins, a component of the extraembryonic venous system. In this paper we report three cases, each of which illustrates a congenital variant of the portal venous system, describe their computed tomography appearances and discuss the embryological processes accounting for these anomalies.

Ectopic pancreas, gastric, duodenal and colonic tissue in a case of persistent umbilical discharge: Report of two patients with review of literature.

One of the typical complaints in the pediatric population is umbilical discharge. Among the congenital causes, remnants of omphalomesenteric duct or patent urachus are often detected. On a few occasions, multiple types of ectopic tissue are present. We describe histopathologic findings of two cases reported recently at our center as pediatric umbilical lesions with associated ectopic tissue. Histopathology of the excised mass confirmed the patent omphalomesenteric duct with ectopic gastric, duodenal, and colonic mucosa and pancreatic tissue in two patients with the clinical presentation of umb

Neonatal prolapsed patent vitellointestinal duct.

A case of a prolapsed patent vitellointestinal duct (PVID) in a 10-day-old neonate who presented with vomiting and poor weight gain with partial intestinal obstruction and a flower like pink, prolapsing lesion at his umbilicus has been reported. A limited contrast study through the tubular structure confirmed it to be a PVID. He underwent transumbilical exploration and resection and anastomosis uneventfully. Persistence of the vitellointestinal duct as a whole or part of it leads to a wide variety of anomalies-Meckel's diverticulum is the commonest lesion and a PVID is the rarest. Umbilical co

An unusual presentation of patent urachus: report of a case.

Congenital umbilical disorders are frequently seen in the pediatric population and are mostly classified as retained umbilical cord structures or failure of umbilical ring closure. Vitelline duct anomalies, urachal anomalies and umbilical herniations comprise the main group of these congenital problems. Here we report a new presentation of vesicoumbilical patency in a 20-day-old male baby. A brief review of the literature concerning the classification of patent urachus to explain the possible mechanism of the anomaly is given.
