Standardizing Data Elements for Implementation of ICU Liberation Bundle.

Getting patients out of intensive care units (ICUs) is a major goal for acute care clinicians, as prolonged stays increase the risk of complications and strain critical resources such as staff, equipment, and beds. The ICU Liberation Bundle, or the ABCDEF (A-F) care bundle, is an evidence-based framework for improving outcomes in critically ill patients by addressing pain, sedation, delirium, mobility, and family engagement. However, variability in documentation and a lack of standardized data elements hinder effective implementation and evaluation of adherence to bundle components. This study

The Role of Moderating Variables on BOLD fMRI Response During Semantic Verbal Fluency and Finger Tapping in Active and Educated Healthy Seniors.

Semantic verbal fluency is among the most employed tasks in cognitive aging research and substantial work is devoted to understanding the underlying mechanisms behind age-related differences at the neural and behavioral levels. The present investigation aimed to evaluate the role of moderating variables, such as age, sex, MMSE, and proxies of cognitive reserve (CR) on the hemodynamic response evoked by semantic verbal fluency in healthy young and healthy older adults. So far, no study has been conducted to this end. To elucidate the exclusive effect of the mentioned variables on brain activati

Orthographic learning in dyslexic Spanish children.

Reading fluency is one of the basic processes of learning to read. Children begin to develop fluency when they are able to form orthographic representations of words, which provide direct, smooth, and fast reading. Dyslexic children of transparent orthographic systems are mainly characterized by poor reading fluency (Cuetos & Suárez-Coalla 2009; Spinelli, De Luca, Di Filippo, Mancini, Martelli, & Zoccolotti, 2005; Wimmer, 1993). Therefore, the main problem for these children could be the difficulty in developing orthographic representations of the words they read. The aim of this study was to

The dystonic child treated with deep brain stimulation: ICF reading of a high-tech approach.

PURPOSE: The available tools used to describe childhood dystonia tend to offer a monodimensional view of the person functioning, which may overlook significant changes induced by treatment. We applied the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) perspective to the description of the clinical picture of a dystonic child treated with deep brain stimulation (DBS) to get a more global representation of the treatment effect. METHOD: An 8-year-old child with secondary dystonia was selected within the institutional program for advanced treatment of pediatric dystonia

Entity/quality-based logical definitions for the human skeletal phenome using PATO.

This paper describes an approach to providing computer-interpretable logical definitions for the terms of the Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) using PATO, the ontology of phenotypic qualities, to link terms of the HPO to the anatomic and other entities that are affected by abnormal phenotypic qualities. This approach will allow improved computerized reasoning as well as a facility to compare phenotypes between different species. The PATO mapping will also provide direct links from phenotypic abnormalities and underlying anatomic structures encoded using the Foundational Model of Anatomy, which w

Causes of death and associated conditions (Codac): a utilitarian approach to the classification of perinatal deaths.

A carefully classified dataset of perinatal mortality will retain the most significant information on the causes of death. Such information is needed for health care policy development, surveillance and international comparisons, clinical services and research. For comparability purposes, we propose a classification system that could serve all these needs, and be applicable in both developing and developed countries. It is developed to adhere to basic concepts of underlying cause in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), although gaps in ICD prevent classification of perinatal dea

Developing standardized titles to classify the adverse events in 7,418 cranial and spinal neurosurgical procedures.

BACKGROUND: Neurosurgical procedures are life- and function-saving but carry a risk of adverse events (AE) which can cause permanent neurologic deficits. Unfortunately, there is lack of clearly defined AEs associated with given procedures, and their reporting is non-uniform and often arbitrary. However, with an increasing number of neurosurgical procedures performed, there is a need for standardization of AEs for systematic tracking. Such a system would establish a baseline for future quality improvement strategies. OBJECTIVE: To review our institutional AEs and devise standardized titles spe

Auditory Lexical Decision and Repetition in Children: Effects of Acoustic and Lexical Constraints.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to identify factors that may detract from children's ability to identify words they do and do not know. Factors investigated were acoustic constraints stemming from the presence of hearing loss (HL) or an acoustic competitor, and lexical constraints due to an impoverished or cluttered vocabulary. DESIGN: Eleven children with normal hearing (NH) and 11 children with bilateral, mild to moderately severe sensorineural HL were asked to categorize and repeat two-syllable real and nonsense words. Stimuli were amplified and frequency shaped for each child

Pictorial mnemonic-strategy interventions for children with special needs: Illustration of a multiply randomized single-case crossover design.

An innovative single-case crossover design containing multiple forms of randomization was implemented with eight participants in seven weekly sessions, during which instruction was given in the use of two different pictorial mnemonic (memory-enhancing) strategies: one designed to improve the children's learning of the dates of various inventions and the other designed to improve the children's acquisition of unfamiliar vocabulary items. A composite randomization statistical test revealed that when compared with the children's own preferred learning methods, the mnemonic-strategy approach produ

PhenomeNET: a whole-phenome approach to disease gene discovery.

Phenotypes are investigated in model organisms to understand and reveal the molecular mechanisms underlying disease. Phenotype ontologies were developed to capture and compare phenotypes within the context of a single species. Recently, these ontologies were augmented with formal class definitions that may be utilized to integrate phenotypic data and enable the direct comparison of phenotypes between different species. We have developed a method to transform phenotype ontologies into a formal representation, combine phenotype ontologies with anatomy ontologies, and apply a measure of semantic

Comparing phonological skills and spelling abilities in children with reading and language impairments.

BACKGROUND: Bishop and Snowling (2004) proposed that children with language impairments (LI) and children with reading difficulties (RD) can be considered to be on a (phonological) continuum of risk for reading impairments. AIMS: The first aim of the present study was to address two specific hypotheses about the relationship between RD and LI. The severity hypothesis proposes that LI is a more severe form of RD. In contrast, the dyslexia-plus hypothesis proposes that children with LI share the same phonological deficit as children with RD, but also have impairments in non-phonological languag

Developmental word grounding through a growing neural network with a humanoid robot.

This paper presents an unsupervised approach of integrating speech and visual information without using any prepared data. The approach enables a humanoid robot, Incremental Knowledge Robot 1 (IKR1), to learn word meanings. The approach is different from most existing approaches in that the robot learns online from audio-visual input, rather than from stationary data provided in advance. In addition, the robot is capable of learning incrementally, which is considered to be indispensable to lifelong learning. A noise-robust self-organized growing neural network is developed to represent the top

Recitation and listening to nursery rhymes in the familiarization with a literacy language in kindergarteners: Not kids' stuff.

A large linguistic distance exists between spoken Arabic and the Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) the literary language (a diglosia). Novice readers, therefore, struggle with the complex orthography of Arabic as well as the mastering of MSA. Here, we tested whether structured activities in MSA would advance kindergarteners' MSA aptitude by the end of the school year. We examined two issues: (a) whether reciting nursery rhymes in MSA would be more effective in promoting language and preliteracy skills in kindergarteners compared to listening to the same texts, and (b) whether there are additional a

Cognitive phenotype in ataxia-telangiectasia.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric cerebrocerebellar neurodegenerative disorders such as ataxia-telangiectasia (AT) have not been examined in detail for neuropsychologic changes. Such studies may contribute to the further understanding of ataxia-telangiectasia and to the role of the cerebrocerebellar system in the development of cognitive function in childhood. METHODS: Twenty-two patients with the classic phenotype of ataxia-telangiectasia were grouped into early stage cerebellar disease (group AT-I) versus late stage cerebrocerebellar disease (group AT-II) and examined for neurocognitive features. Paths to reading comprehension in at-risk second-grade readers.

Two studies of second graders at risk for reading disability, which were guided by levels of language and functional reading system theory, focused on reading comprehension in this population. In Study 1 (n = 96), confirmatory factor analysis of five comprehension measures loaded on one factor in both fall and spring of second grade. Phonological decoding predicted accuracy of real-word reading; automatic letter naming predicted rate of real-word reading; accuracy and rate of both real-word reading (more so than decoding of pseudowords) and text reading predicted reading comprehension; and Ver

Peripheral oxytocin but not vasopressin concentrations are associated with language skills in young autistic children.

BACKGROUND: Autistic children often have language development problems, and language ability is a key contributor to social behavior. There is increasing evidence for altered circulating concentrations of the neuropeptides oxytocin and vasopressin in young autistic children and exogenous treatment with either peptide can improve social symptoms. However, to date, the importance of both tonic endogenous concentrations of these two peptides and increased ones following exogenous administration for language development in autistic children has not been established. METHODS: Here we have firstly

Factors Explaining Deficits in Reading Acquisition: The Case of Williams Syndrome.

Purpose Multiple factors impact reading acquisition in individuals with reading disability, including genetic disorders such as Williams syndrome (WS). Despite a relative strength in oral language, individuals with WS usually have an intellectual disability and tend to display deficits in areas associated with reading. There is substantial variability in their reading skills. While some authors have postulated that phonological deficits are at the source of their reading deficits, others have suggested that they can be attributed to visuospatial deficits. This study was the first to undertake

Knowledge of New English vocabulary in amnesia: an examination of premorbidly acquired semantic memory.

To assess if amnesics have intact remote memory for general semantic information, we examined memory for vocabulary words with known dates of entry into the language between 1955 and 1989. Amnesics of mixed etiology with acute onset performed normally on both a recall and a recognition task. Korsakoff patients, in contrast, were impaired on both tasks and demonstrated a gradient such that their knowledge of words acquired during more recent time periods was worse than that of words acquired during more remote time periods. The improvement in performance associated with recognition testing was
