Vocal cord paralysis is a common cause of respiratory and feeding problems in the pediatric population. While the causes of vocal cord paralysis are multiple, iatrogenic injury of the recurrent laryngeal nerve after cardiovascular surgery is the most frequent cause. Vocal cord paralysis increases the risk of swallowing dysfunction, tracheal aspiration and pneumonia. It also increases the need for nasoenteric feeds and gastrostomy tube placement. Flexible nasopharyngolaryngoscopy is considered the gold standard for diagnosing vocal cord paralysis, but it has significant drawbacks: it is uncomfo

We describe a patient with olivopontocerebellar atrophy (OPCA) who was referred for alleged "snoring." Polysomnogram with video and audio monitoring revealed that the patient actually had nocturnal stridor causing repetitive oxygen desaturations. Direct laryngoscopy while awake showed a unilateral vocal cord paralysis. The nocturnal stridor persisted after unilateral vocal cord pinning, suggesting that the patient had probably been experiencing bilateral vocal cord paresis while asleep. We conclude that state-dependent vocal cord dysfunction may be severe in OPCA and related multiple system at

Three cases of left recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy following heart-lung transplantation are described. In each case, within twelve hours of extubation, the left vocal cord was injected with Teflon, and the paralyzed vocal cord thus displaced to the midline. Effective closure of the glottis was then possible, permitting an adequate cough, adequate clearing of the bronchial tree and minimising the risk of aspiration. Augmentation under general anaesthesia as soon as possible after discovery of vocal cord dysfunction is advocated. Suitable materials for injection are discussed. To our knowledge,

BACKGROUND: Chronic cough and vocal cord dysfunction are manifestations of laryngeal hypersensitivity syndrome.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the clinical utility of functional transnasal laryngoscopy in patients with laryngeal hypersensitivity syndromes.
METHODS: This study was a prospective observational cross-sectional study design of 71 participants with laryngeal hypersensitivity syndrome referred for functional transnasal laryngoscopy. Participants had a clinical assessment with a speech pathologist after which a provisional diagnosis of chronic cough, suspected voca

Vincristine-sulfate-related vocal cord paralysis has been reported infrequently in the literature. The neurotoxicity of the vinca alkaloids is well-known; however, the potential for cranial nerve involvement is not widely recognized. Given the complexity of the typical patient receiving such a chemotherapeutic agent, the potential for misdiagnosis is high. Many patients have primary tumors or metastatic lesions in sites that could cause the clinician to overlook this reversible cause of neurologic dysfunction. This study describes the first three reported pediatric cases of vincristine-induced

BACKGROUND: Many patients with difficult asthma also have coexisting vocal cord dysfunction (VCD), evident by paradoxical vocal fold motion (PVFM) on laryngoscopy.
OBJECTIVE: Among patients with difficult asthma, we sought to identify clinical features associated with laryngoscopy-diagnosed PVFM.
METHODS: Consecutive patients with "difficult asthma" referred by respiratory specialists underwent systematic assessment in this observational study. Those with a high clinical suspicion for VCD were referred for laryngoscopy, either at rest or after mannitol provocation. Statistical analyses were

Laryngeal electromyography can provide prognostic information when evaluating patients with vocal cord dysfunction. Twenty-four patients were studied to determine the predictive capacity of this test. Six patients had bilateral vocal cord paralysis, constituting a total of 30 vocal cords examined. Sixteen of these cords had decreased or absent motor unit potentials, fibrillations, or positive waves. None of these patients recovered function. Fourteen cords demonstrated either normal motor unit or polyphasic potentials. Return of mobility was evident in 11 of these cords. The combined total was

Paradoxical Vocal Fold Movement Disorder is where the larynx exhibits paradoxical vocal cords closure during respiration, creating partial airway obstruction. Causes of vocal fold movement disorder are multifactorial, and patients describe tightness of throat, difficulty getting air in, have stridor, and do not respond to inhalers. We propose using transnasal laryngoscopy examination, which will show narrowing of vocal cords on inspiration, and The Pittsburgh Vocal Cord Dysfunction Index with a cutoff score of ≥4 to distinguish vocal fold movement disorder from asthma and other causes of strid

We report a 68-year-old man who exhibited mild dysarthria and mild right hemiparesis resulted from hypoperfusion of the left hemisphere. An MR angiography showed a severe stenosis at the second portion of left middle cerebral artery (MCA). After the beginning of treatment, the patient suffered from hoarseness, followed by breathing failure. The laryngeal fiber exhibited right vocal cord paresis. Unilateral cortico-bulbar tract dysfunction does not typically cause vocal cord palsy. However, several cases indicate the involvement of a dominant projection from the contralateral cortico-bulbar tra

A case of a 55-year-old woman with iatrogenic vocal cord trauma and sleep-related symptoms is reported. In particular, this case highlights sleep-disordered breathing as a delayed complication after iatrogenic vocal cord trauma. The patient developed acute stridor from a contralateral vocal cord hematoma following vocal fold injection for right vocal cord paralysis. Acute respiratory symptoms resolved with oxygen, steroids, and nebulized therapy, but nocturnal symptoms persisted and polysomnography revealed sleep-related hypoventilation and mild obstructive sleep apnea. Positive pressure thera

BACKGROUND Paradoxical vocal fold motion (PVFM) is characterized by inappropriate adduction of the vocal folds during inspiration, causing inspiratory stridor and feeding challenges. Its nonspecific symptoms and frequent co-occurrence with other conditions make diagnosis challenging. While PVFM is described in older children, neonatal cases remain rare and poorly understood. Limited data exists regarding its incidence, clinical features, and optimal management strategies, and no universally accepted guidelines exist for diagnosing neonatal PVFM. CASE REPORT This case describes a term Hispanic

We report a case of persistent bilateral vocal cord paralysis which developed after spine surgery under general anesthesia in a patient with multiple system atrophy. A 64-year-old woman was scheduled to receive spinal fusion surgery for kyphoscoliosis. She did not have apparent symptoms of vocal cord paralysis such as hoarseness before surgery. The surgery was performed smoothly under general anesthesia with endotracheal intubation. However, immediately after extubation, the patient developed severe upper airway obstruction and was re-intubated. Fiberoptic laryngoscopy revealed bilateral vocal

Vocal cord paralysis is a recognized complication of tracheal and nasogastric tube insertion. When associated with nasogastric tube insertion, it is termed nasogastric tube syndrome (NGTS). This syndrome is classically characterized by a triad of throat pain, presence of a nasogastric tube, and vocal cord paralysis, which is often bilateral. A 75-year-old man developed stridor and dyspnea without throat pain 12 days after tracheal extubation, while a nasogastric tube had remained in place for 18 days. The following day, laryngoscopy performed by an otolaryngologist revealed median vocal cord f

Charcot-Marie Tooth disease (CMT) encompasses several inherited peripheral motor-sensory neuropathies and is one of the most common inherited neuromuscular diseases. Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease can be associated with several disorders that may be encountered by the pulmonary physician, including restrictive pulmonary impairment, sleep apnea, restless legs, and vocal cord dysfunction. Restrictive pulmonary impairment has been described in association with phrenic nerve dysfunction, diaphragm dysfunction, or thoracic cage abnormalities. Central sleep apnea may be associated with diaphragm dysfun

We describe two adolescent patients in whom a disorder of the vocal cords associated with emotional factors resulted in acute episodes of stridor. Adduction of the vocal cords on inspiration and abduction on expiration was found on indirect laryngoscopy. The problem responded to either placebo treatment or psychotherapy. The similarity between vocal cord dysfunction presenting as stridor and that presenting as asthma is discussed. The importance of diagnosing these functional problems in children is emphasized in order to avoid unnecessary diagnostic procedures and hazardous treatment.

BACKGROUND: Vocal cord dysfunction is a significant complication after thyroid surgery, typically evaluated with invasive laryngoscopy. This study assessed diagnostic accuracy and feasibility of lateral laryngeal ultrasound as a noninvasive alternative.
METHODS: In a prospective, double-blind study at Gyeongsang National University Changwon Hospital (February 2016 to June 2023), 718 patients underwent preoperative and postoperative vocal cord assessment using laryngoscopy and lateral laryngeal ultrasound. Both patients and assessors were blinded to the counterpart modality. Sensitivity, speci
