Reconstruction of the esophagus and voice.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal defects are reconstructed using a variety of methods and tissue types. The choice depends on the location of the defect, the condition of the patient, and the flaps that are available for reconstruction. Often, patients with esophageal defects also lack a mechanism for voice production following a total laryngectomy procedure. METHODS: A review of the literature was performed for esophagus reconstruction and voice rehabilitation following laryngectomy. Methods of voice restoration using intestinal transfers are presented based on the authors' experience. RESULTS: Sever

Management of the transgender voice.

Transsexualism is a condition involving a paradoxical feeling of belonging to the opposite sex. Acquiring a sex-appropriate voice is a crucial part of the patient gaining acceptance in their new gender. Speech and language therapists and otolaryngologists play an important role in influencing communication behaviour in transgender patients by altering the fundamental frequency of speech to one acceptable for the patient's sex. Review of the literature suggests that speech and language therapy is successful at creating an acceptable fundamental frequency in transgender patients, as well as infl

Anatomical parameters of the voice.

Analysis of the anatomical parameters of the voice allows us to observe the relations--which exist not only within the cortical centres but also in the underlying centres--between structures governing phonation functions and those concerned with the functions of hearing and of language. Voice, articulation, speech, language and hearing are so many elements of one and the same function of communication.

Comparison of Two Multiparameter Acoustic Voice Outcome Indices in the Treatment of Hyperfunctional Voice Disorders: Dysphonia Severity Index and Acoustic Voice Quality Index.

INTRODUCTION: The Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI) and Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) are the two widely used multiparameter acoustic instrumented indices that estimate dysphonia severity and track treatment outcomes. This study compared the performance of these two indices in identifying voice quality changes with eclectic voice therapy in individuals with hyperfunctional voice disorders (HFVD). METHOD: Twenty individuals with HFVD including eight males and 13 females in the age range of 20-55 years received an eclectic voice therapy program named the Comprehensive Voice Habilitation Prog

Voice in the algorithmic era: how perceived algorithmic control influences gig workers' voice behavior.

Existing studies have focused on gig workers' voice behavior and the mechanisms through which it is expressed via official and unofficial channels, the underlying logic of voice behavior generation, particularly its operational pathways under algorithmic control remains under-investigated. Drawing on fairness heuristic theory, this paper proposes a moderated mediation model to explore the effect of perceived algorithmic control on gig workers' voice behavior and its boundary condition. Based on the questionnaire data of 260 gig workers, the empirical results indicate that perceived algorithmic

Communication Experiences of Neurological Voice Disorder Patients With Automatic Voice Assistants and Human Listeners.

OBJECTIVES: Automated voice assistants (AVAs) are increasingly important to modern communication. Neurological voice disorders (NVDs) impair voice quality and speech intelligibility, leading to communication challenges. Although dysphonia disrupts communication with human listeners, the communication experience with AVA is unknown for individuals with NVDs. This study aimed to investigate self-reported communication experiences across AVA and human interactions for individuals with NVDs. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional METHODS: The patient group comprised individuals with NVDs who were planning

Patient Perspectives on Self-Management of Voice Prostheses in Surgical Voice Restoration After Laryngectomy.

BACKGROUND: Surgical Voice Restoration is the gold standard method of re-establishing spoken communication after laryngectomy, where the voice-box is surgically removed. A silicone voice prosthesis (valve) allows voicing. To minimise health risks, valves must be changed swiftly if they fail. While self-management of health conditions is considered a key NHS objective, few people with laryngectomy in the UK change their own valve, requiring ongoing clinic attendance and healthcare professional input. AIMS: To explore the perspectives of people with laryngectomy on self-changing, determining pe

Effects on Voice Quality of Thyroidectomy: A Qualitative and Quantitative Study Using Voice Maps.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to explore the effects of thyroidectomy-a surgical intervention involving the removal of the thyroid gland-on voice quality, as represented by acoustic and electroglottographic measures. Given the thyroid gland's proximity to the inferior and superior laryngeal nerves, thyroidectomy carries a potential risk of affecting vocal function. While earlier studies have documented effects on the voice range, few studies have looked at voice quality after thyroidectomy. Since voice quality effects could manifest in many ways, that a priori are unknown, we wish to apply an ex

Development and evaluation of a new intraoral voice assist device called the voice retriever.

OBJECTIVE: Patients lose their voice after laryngectomy for laryngeal cancer or aspiration prevention surgery for severe dysphagia. To assist such patients, we developed and verified the utility of a novel vocalization method using a device termed the voice retriever (VR), in which the sound source is placed in the mouth. METHODS: We investigated the effectiveness of the VR in patients. The VR consists of a mouthpiece with a built-in speaker and a dedicated application that serves as the sound source. We compared the speech intelligibility and naturalness in normal participants using VR and a

Voice self-assessment in individuals with Parkinson's Disease as compared to general voice disorders.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Parkinson's Disease (IwPD) often fail to adjust their voice in different situations, without awareness of this limitation. Clinicians use self-report questionnaires that are typically designed for individuals with General Voice Disorders (GVD) in the vocal assessment of IwPD. However, these instruments may not consider that IwPD have a reduced self-perception of their vocal deficits. This study aimed to compare self-reported vocal symptoms and voice loudness between IwPD and GVD. METHODS: 28 IwPD and 26 with GVD completed the Voice Symptom Scale (VoiSS) questionna

The Acoustic Voice Quality Index, Version 03.01, in French and the Voice Handicap Index.

OBJECTIVES: The Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI), version 03.01, is a tool for quantitative assessment of the overall severity of dysphonia. Its computation includes six acoustic parameters, which are all analyzed with Praat freeware. It is based on recordings of a sustained vowel and part of a text read aloud. The psychometric qualities of this tool in various languages, including French, have been confirmed by numerous publications. However, studies investigating the correlation between tools for objective vocal assessment and voice-related quality of life show inconsistent results. Hence
