Effects of the combination therapy of tilt sensor functional electrical stimulation and integrated volitional control electrical stimulation on brain activity during the subacute phase following stroke: a feasibility study.

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to investigate whether the combination of integrated volitional control functional electrical stimulation and tilt sensor functional electrical stimulation training affected brain activation during the subacute phase following a stroke. [Participant and Methods] The patient was a 60-year-old male with right hemiparesis, secondary to stroke in the left thalamus. Conventional intervention was performed for 60 minutes per day during the first two weeks of treatment (the control condition). Functional electrical stimulation intervention, including integrated vol

Evaluation of the Combined Application of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation and Volitional Contractions on Thigh Muscle Strength, Knee Pain, and Physical Performance in Women at Risk for Knee Osteoarthritis: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of disability that is associated with quadriceps weakness. However, strengthening in people with or with risk factors for knee OA can be poorly tolerated. OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of a 12-week low-load exercise program, using a hybrid training system (HTS) that uses the combination of neuromuscular electrical stimulation and volitional contractions, for improving thigh muscle strength, knee pain relief, and physical performance in women with or with risk factors for knee OA. DESIGN: Randomized, single-blinded, controlled trial.

A theory-driven structural equation modeling approach to the behavioral inhibition and behavioral activation systems model of chronic pain: Evaluating the mediating role of self-regulatory and volitional abilities.

Objective: Gray's reinforcement sensitivity, describing elementary motivational systems that mediate cognitive-affective and behavioral responses to punishing (behavioral inhibition system [BIS]) and Rewarding (behavioral activation system [BAS]) stimuli, has been most widely applied in the study of the motivational underpinnings of pain-related responses. Empirical findings regarding the associations of BIS and BAS with pain-relevant clinical outcomes are inconsistent, however. Drawing on personality systems interaction theory, the present cross-sectional study aimed at evaluating the mediati

Non-invasive spinal cord neuromodulation enables volitional anti-gravity leg movements after motor-complete spinal cord injury: responders vs. non-responders.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) is an emerging treatment for motor recovery following spinal cord injury (SCI). However, the extent of motor recovery with tSCS and the reasons why some individuals with motor-complete SCI respond less effectively, despite having the same injury classification, remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that lumbosacral tSCS can enable anti-gravity voluntary movement following motor-complete SCI, and identify markers that distinguish responders from non-responders. METHODS: Ten individuals with chronic cervical and upper thora

Lifetime prevalence, associated factors, and circumstances of non-volitional sex in women and men in Britain: findings from the third National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal-3).

BACKGROUND: Sexual violence is increasingly recognised as a public health issue. Information about prevalence, associated factors, and consequences for health in the population of Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales) is scarce. The third National Survey of Sexual Health Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal-3) is the first of the Natsal surveys to include questions about sexual violence and the first population-based survey in Britain to explore the issue outside the context of crime. METHODS: Between Sept 6, 2010, and Aug 31, 2012, we did a probability sample survey of women and men aged 16-74

Differential recovery of volitional motor function, lateralized cognitive function, dopamine agonist-induced rotation and dopaminergic parameters in monkeys made hemi-parkinsonian by intracarotid MPTP infusion.

There is still controversy regarding the frequency and extent of spontaneous functional recovery in primate models of parkinsonism, perhaps in part stemming from the variety of ways in which recovery has been assessed. The present study examined functional recovery in monkeys made unilaterally parkinsonian by intracarotid infusion of MPTP. Monkeys were evaluated prior to lesioning and for at least 1 year after lesioning on a battery of tests including a rating of spontaneous behaviors, a learned reaction time/movement time task, tests of lateralized neglect or inattention (i.e. lateralized rew

Distinguishing Patient Profiles of Suicidal Ideation and Behavior: The Influence of Repetitive Negative Thinking, Internal and External Entrapment, and Defeat within the Integrated Motivational-Volitional Model in a Suicide Prevention Program.

This study investigates the cognitive mechanisms that facilitate the transition from suicidal ideation (SI) to suicidal behavior (SB), focusing on the interplay of repetitive negative thinking (RNT), feelings of defeat, and perceptions of entrapment, both internal and external, within the framework of the Integrated Motivational-Volitional (IMV) Model. We aimed to predict group membership and identify predictors between those exhibiting SI (n = 56) and those with SB (n = 37), with particular attention to the aforementioned cognitive variables. The Impact of Acute Mild Normobaric Hypoxia and a Single Bout of Exercise to Volitional Exhaustion on Cognitive Performance in Endurance and Strength-Trained Athletes: The role of BDNF, EP-1, Catecholamines and Lactate.

The aim of the study was to examine whether a single bout of exercise to volitional exhaustion, performed under moderate normobaric hypoxia (H), would affect psychomotor performance (PP) in differently trained athletes. For this purpose, ten strength-trained (S) athletes, ten endurance-trained (E) athletes and ten healthy men leading a sedentary lifestyle as a control (C) group performed voluntarily two graded exercise tests until volitional exhaustion (EVE) under normoxia (N) and H (FiO2 = 14.7%). We measured the peripheral level of the brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), choice reactio

Effect of epidural spinal cord stimulation after chronic spinal cord injury on volitional movement and cardiovascular function: study protocol for the phase II open label controlled E-STAND trial.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to significant changes in morbidity, mortality and quality of life (QOL). Currently, there are no effective therapies to restore function after chronic SCI. Preliminary studies have indicated that epidural spinal cord stimulation (eSCS) is a promising therapy to improve motor control and autonomic function for patients with chronic SCI. The aim of this study is to assess the effects of tonic eSCS after chronic SCI on quantitative outcomes of volitional movement and cardiovascular function. Our secondary objective is to optimise spinal cord stimulati

Effects of working memory load and CS-US intervals on delay eyeblink conditioning.

Eyeblink conditioning is used in many species to study motor learning and make inferences about cerebellar function. However, the discrepancies in performance between humans and other species combined with evidence that volition and awareness can modulate learning suggest that eyeblink conditioning is not merely a passive form of learning that relies on only the cerebellum. Here we explored two ways to reduce the influence of volition and awareness on eyeblink conditioning: (1) using a short interstimulus interval, and (2) having participants do working memory tasks during the conditioning. Work and well-being in TGNC adults: The moderating effect of workplace protections.

The present study used a psychology of working theory (PWT) framework to test the direct and indirect relations of perceived social status and transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) marginalization (i.e., victimization, nonaffirmation of gender identity, negative expectations for the future) with work volition, overqualification, and vocational and emotional well-being outcomes (i.e., job satisfaction, meaningful work, satisfaction with life, depression) in a sample of 175 TGNC working adults. This study also tested the moderating effect of one form of structural marginalization (lack of

Recovery of Volitional Motor Control and Overground Walking in Participants With Chronic Clinically Motor Complete Spinal Cord Injury: Restoration of Rehabilitative Function With Epidural Spinal Stimulation (RESTORES) Trial-A Preliminary Study.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is damage to any part of the spinal cord resulting in paralysis, bowel and/or bladder incontinence, and loss of sensation and other bodily functions. Current treatments for chronic SCI are focused on managing symptoms and preventing further damage to the spinal cord with limited neuro-restorative interventions. Recent research and independent clinical trials of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) or intensive neuro-rehabilitation including neuro-robotics in participants with SCI have suggested potential malleability of the neuronal networks for neurological recovery. We hypo

Phenomenology of glioma resection in the dorsal medial frontal cortex.

BACKGROUND: During the latest decades, the hypothesis that the subjective experience of free will is determined by preconscious activity in the dominant dorsal medial frontal cortex (dMFC) has repeatedly challenged our commonly held concepts of moral responsibility. AIMS OF THE STUDY: To investigate whether dMFC activity determines the sense of free will and to investigate the effects of resections in this area on quality of life (QoL). METHODS: A cohort of nine patients affected by transient declines in speech and movement skills after surgery involving the left dMFC answered questions abou

Integration of brain-computer interfaces with sacral nerve stimulation: a vision for closed-loop, volitional control of bladder function in neurogenic patients through real-time cortical signal modulation and peripheral neuro-stimulation.

Sacral nerve stimulation (SNS) and brain-computer interfaces (BCI) are emerging neuromodulation therapies that offer innovative solutions for chronic neurological disorders. SNS, primarily used in the management of conditions such as urinary incontinence and chronic pelvic pain, demonstrates significant therapeutic potential. In contrast, BCIs are rapidly advancing in their ability to restore lost motor functions and improve the quality of life of patients with severe neurological impairments, such as spinal cord injury and stroke. The integration of SNS and BCI technologies presents a promisi

A Meta-Synthesis on Sexuality in Persons with Dementia Mapped Using the Model of Human Occupation.

Dementia affects the individual's functional ability including sexual activity. Limited understanding is available to support sexual health practices. This meta-synthesis review aimed to identify the gaps in the study of sexuality in dementia using the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO). Electronic searches utilizing six databases for existing articles involving persons living with dementia, care partners, and healthcare workers. The result showed that available studies primarily explored sexuality from the viewpoint of spouses of persons living with dementia. The volition domain of MOHO was the

Tracking the will to attend: Cortical activity indexes self-generated, voluntary shifts of attention.

The neural substrates of volition have long tantalized philosophers and scientists. Over the past few decades, researchers have employed increasingly sophisticated technology to investigate this issue, but many studies have been limited considerably by their reliance on intrusive experimental procedures (e.g., abrupt instructional cues), measures of brain activity contaminated by overt behavior, or introspective self-report techniques of questionable validity. Here, we used multivoxel pattern time-course analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging data to index voluntary, covert perceptu

FES-Induced and Voluntary-Induced Fatigue in a Rehabilitation-Like Task.

In the context of FES-based rehabilitation and assistance tasks, there is a growing interest in managing the induced fatigue, which is an obvious limiting factor in training duration. However, it is unclear whether and how fatigue may develop in tasks commonly used in stroke rehabilitation. This work explored the effect of FES- or volition- induced movements on EMG-based effort and M-wave metrics that characterise fatigue, during a continuous wrist target-tracking task completed by 22 unimpaired participants. We found no significant changes in the mechanical and electrical responses of the mus

Diffracting addicting binaries: An analysis of personal accounts of alcohol and other drug 'addiction'.

Associated with social and individual harm, loss of control and destructive behaviour, addiction is widely considered to be a major social problem. Most models of addiction, including the influential disease model, rely on the volition/compulsion binary, conceptualising addiction as a disorder of compulsion. In order to interrogate this prevailing view, this article draws on qualitative data from interviews with people who describe themselves as having an alcohol or other drug 'addiction', 'dependence' or 'habit'. Applying the concept of 'diffraction' elaborated by science studies scholar Kare

Objectivation of laryngeal electromyography (LEMG) data: turn number vs. qualitative analysis.

PURPOSE: This paper describes a first attempt to quantify LEMG data based on turn number calculation. The results obtained for both healthy and ailing thyroarytenoid (TA) muscles of patients with unilateral vocal fold immobility (UVFI) were compared with the respective qualitative evaluation concerning volitional activity to determine whether the two types of analyses deliver similar results. METHODS: LEMG data obtained from 44 adults with UVFI were considered for the study. Semiquantitative evaluation of TA volitional activity and turn number were assessed for the ailing and the healthy TA a
