Isolated and painless (?) atrophy of the infraspinatus muscle. Left handed versus right handed volleyball players.

The suprascapular nerve originates from the upper trunk of the brachial plexus or less frequently from the root of C5. It runs a short way and crosses the suprascapular notch. It innervates the supraspinatus muscle and the acromioclavicular and glenohumeral joints. Then, it crosses the lateral edge of the spine of the scapula passing through the spinoglenoid notch, and innervates the infraspinatus muscle. These are potential sites of injury to the suprascapular nerve. Three cases of suprascapular nerve entrapment causing an isolated infraspinatus muscle atrophy in volleyball players were studi

Ten-year follow-up of suprascapular nerve decompression in a competitive volleyball player: a case report.

We present a case of 10-year follow-up in a 27-year-old female collegiate volleyball athlete with continued infraspinatus atrophy confirmed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) despite compliance with physical therapy and rehabilitation following open suprascapular nerve (SSN) decompression. She successfully returned to sport post-operatively; however, at 10 year follow-up, had continued weakness and pain, without evidence of nerve injury on EMG. This is the first known report of 10-year follow-up in an athlete who underwent open SSN decompression without evidence of an associated spinoglenoid

Microstructural Alterations in Tract Development in College Football and Volleyball Players: A Longitudinal Diffusion MRI Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Repeated impacts in high-contact sports such as American football can affect the brain's microstructure, which can be studied using diffusion MRI. Most imaging studies are cross-sectional, do not include low-contact players as controls, or lack advanced tract-specific microstructural metrics. We aimed to investigate longitudinal changes in high-contact collegiate athletes compared with low-contact controls using advanced diffusion MRI and automated fiber quantification. METHODS: We examined brain microstructure in high-contact (football) and low-contact (volleyball)

The influence of expertise on brain activation of the action observation network during anticipation of tennis and volleyball serves.

In many daily activities, and especially in sport, it is necessary to predict the effects of others' actions in order to initiate appropriate responses. Recently, researchers have suggested that the action-observation network (AON) including the cerebellum plays an essential role during such anticipation, particularly in sport expert performers. In the present study, we examined the influence of task-specific expertise on the AON by investigating differences between two expert groups trained in different sports while anticipating action effects. Altogether, 15 tennis and 16 volleyball experts

Combined Non-Invasive Cardiac Imaging and Genetic Testing of Elite Volleyball Players: A Ten-Year Experience.

Sudden cardiac death in athletes is a devastating event. Although significant progress has been made in identifying the underlying pathophysiology and genetic basis for sudden cardiac death in young athletes, controversy exists regarding cost-effective screening measures to identify at-risk individuals. In this report we describe our ten-year experience performing cardiovascular assessments on 150 members of the United States Men's and Women's National Volleyball teams. Through a combination of history, physical, echocardiography and genetic testing, we have identified one previously undiagnos

Active success drives momentum, but late-stage errors destroy it: a real-time analysis of volleyball.

INTRODUCTION: Psychological momentum is a dynamic system that characterizes the psychological states of individuals progressing toward or regressing from goal attainment. As research has largely relied on controlled laboratory settings or artificial scenarios, empirical evidence from actual athletic competitions remains limited. Therefore, this study aimed to comprehensively elucidate how play content, game stages, and player expertise interact to dictate the micro-dynamics of momentum among actors during a real match. METHODS: Real-time measurements were conducted with 25 male high-school vo
